Whiskey Cavalier

I've had trouble with my internet connection all day. It's like a conspiracy to keep me from my shot of Whiskey! I was finally able to watch the whole episode again and here are my thoughts.

First off, this one gave me something I've been so anxious to see. I've wanted to know why Frankie is so closed off and I wanted to see her vulnerable. I got both and so much more! I thought this was excellent writing in that it developed her character and advanced her and Will's relationship while still having a twisty mission in play. I kind of liked the fact that this one was in the US, with LA and New England being the settings.

The mission provided some really surprising twists - at least for me. I was surprised that Kelly's husband was the ring leader, surprised that Kelly tipped him off that Frankie was after him, surprised at how Kelly stepped in front of the gun to save Frankie, and I also loved the different ending. After the usual toast to a successful mission, just for kicks, they go back to LA to get the one that got away! These 2 sure know what makes the other one happy! 

Focusing on Will and Frankie, I loved that Frankie opened up to Will in the car and all throughout the first visit with Kelly, Frankie managed the reveals and teasing about her teen years without getting too belligerent. It was quite the interesting reaction from both of them when Kelly asked if they were a couple! Throughout the whole episode, they acted like a married couple in so many ways. I could totally see this being the show that FINALLY is able to recreate the fun that we saw with a married couple in Hart To Hart. Have I mentioned how much I'm CUSSING ABC??? I mentioned earlier that I've been wanting to see a vulnerable Frankie and I got that moment when she rushed into Kelly's arms at the airport after the confrontation. I instantly teared up and then, when they showed Will's face as he witnessed it, I kind of lost it. This episode was a big payoff for me.

I never fail to have a few favorite lines from the episodes, but this one had some really great ones that I want to highlight. Will's, "OMG, there are 2 of them!" was delivered so perfectly! That one left me snorting! I also loved Will's assessment that, "I have a resting smile face, I guess." What a great way to describe him and his positive outlook on life. Under the category of 'absurdly funny', would be this exchange about listening to the Frozen music as he worked out - "Musicals give me an endorphin rush." and Frankie's retort - "You're so sexy." Gotta say - I love a man who listens to musicals!    Then, there was Will's question during the parking garage shootout - "Does he buy these guys in bulk?" LMAO! Lastly, was the one that gripped my heart. It was when Frankie and Kelly were talking at the end about being closed off and Frankie said - "You lose enough people that you love, it seems safer." She's had a pretty tough life and I'd love to see this series continue and lead to Frankie finding happiness with Will. Have I mentioned how much I'm CUSSING ABC??

I think I've commented before on the great way they use oldies for the music background. I'm not sure of the title of this song but I do remember it and thought the chorus was so appropriate. It goes, "Cruel to be kind means that I love you....." I know I'm preaching to the choir here but this show checks all of my boxes for great entertainment. It reminds me of a good book that gets better and better with each chapter as characters are developed and revealed and there's an interesting storyline, humor and romance threaded through it all. Have I mentioned how much I'm CUSSING ABC?

Oh my goodness! I can't believe I forgot to highlight the very scene I MAY have already watched 10 times, but who's counting! I've also been aching to see some physical contact between Frankie and Will that heightens their attraction. The last time was during the Spain episode when Frankie gave Will the massage.

This time it was a tennis lesson! So well done and both actors have such expressive faces that I felt the emotional connection. Fun fact - Scott Foley really is an accomplished tennis player. He's played in pro/am tournaments. 

So Frankie is getting the message that it's OK to care and she's willing to try to be better at it. Will loves seeing this in her and will, undoubtedly, be happy to drink in all that she can give him! I'm dying to see the sneak peek for the finale again. I learned from Castle that they can play with you with their editing but it did sound like maybe Will and Frankie will dip their toes into a relationship. Knowing that this may very well be the final episode we ever get, I hope with all my heart that we get some measure of payoff for investing in them. I'm sure the finale will leave unanswered questions because they were hoping for a second season, but it would be a hard pill to swallow if the progress we saw in this episode doesn't gain us something at the end. I'm glad we'll see them up against Ollerman again and I'm sure there'll be plenty of tension, but I hope it ends up being satisfying for us. Have I mentioned how much I'm CUSSING ABC??

  I'm so mad at myself -- dropped the ball on this one as I hadn't been checking David Hemingson's twitter feed the last couple of days.   I should have been TWITTERING last night!!!!!!  Check out the top pinned tweet!!!!!  I'm going to do it today in case it makes a difference.

I checked his feed last night and was thrilled that he said there was one more chance for the show to find a new home! I'm praying mighty hard! I'm not on Twitter but have been very supportive on Facebook.

I love that he also promised that if they don't continue, he'll tell us what was going to happen with the cliffhanger and show us the rest of that last Frankie and Will scene on the rooftop. I consider that a fantastic gesture to the fans!

I'll be back with lots of thoughts on the finale after I watch it again today!

Spoiler Alert! I'm going to share my thoughts on the finale.

As far as finales go, it was darn near perfect IMO. The writers stayed true to the characters and the tone of the show as well as the ongoing storyline with Ollerman. They gave us a great measure of satisfaction, which is different from closure, while still leaving questions to be answered should the show continue. I expected a cliffhanger of some sort and that twist at the end was a doozy! I'll get to my one disappointment later.

I was so satisfied to see Ray's storyline move forward both with Susan and with Will. This episode he was so much more mature than usual and, like Jai, I found myself rooting for him and Susan. I'm glad she finally told Will about them and I loved Will's admission that he already knew - "I AM a spy!" I'm so glad it isn't going to come between Will and Susan. I also loved the scene where Will and Ray put the past behind them. So perfectly played!

I was satisfied that Tina got what was coming to her. Poor Standish for having to deal with the betrayal, but he had the best line of the show when he said, "Consider yourself dumped!"

In a lot of ways, Jai was the real hero of the show and Vir Das played his scenes to perfection! Seeing all of the emotion Jai experienced as he prepared for Ray's torture, was quite the moving scene. There's no doubt in my mind that Jai has come the farthest of all the characters and I love him to death!

That leaves Will and Frankie. I was ever so satisfied to see them so easily becoming a part of each other's daily lives. In that opening sequence, not only is Frankie hanging out at Will's place, but he's asking her for packing advice and preparing to share his long underwear when she needs it! What a hoot! They looked for all the world like a married couple. Then, at the bar, Frankie's looking for her spare gun and Will answers before she even gets the question out. They're so in sync and, of course, he packed her spare gun. It was precious! Then they slip into sharing takeout and wine and discussing fate. My only disappointment from the finale was that we didn't get to see them kiss at the end. It sure looked like they were about to do it and it would have been so appropriate considering all that had already happened. I really don't think it would have hurt anything if there was a season 2 coming. Last night I read through the show runner's Twitter and he said that, if the show does not return, he'll tell us what happened to Standish and he'll show us the kiss, so there was obviously going to be one! I certainly want a season 2 but I also want to see that kiss!!!!!!!

I have fallen in love with these characters and this show! I've laughed a lot, cried a bit and enjoyed every minute I've spent with them. I'm praying for a miracle and the news that the show will return for a second season somewhere!

Well, once again, it's bad news. The show runner just tweeted that ABC has again passed on the show. I am completely bummed. Nothing was said about the possibility of some other platform picking it up so I get the feeling that there's nothing else in the works.

This was really disappointing. It feels like ABC dangled the carrot in front of fans just to yank it away again.

It must be crazy to have a job where you never know if it will continue? I like the way NBC gives out 3 yr renewals to This is Us. ABC always makes their shows hang in the wind unless Shonda writes it. I stopped watching all of her shows years ago but someone must be watching...

I'm planning on getting as much binging in of Whiskey Cavalier as I can before my Hulu free trial is up, then I guess I'll buy the season from iTunes.  

I am so discouraged by what just took place with ABC....and even more so if I'm reading David Hemingson's tweets right....the fact that they would give us the kiss and what happened to Standish seems like they are going to move on.   But, I was thinking of Longmire (although they had 3 seasons on A&E so quite a big difference in episodes and very active fanbase), and then Netflix picked them up and we got another 2 seasons.  Maybe ?......just really bummed at the moment.

Fjordmom, I don't think you'll ever regret the iTunes purchase because you'll have all the episodes forever. I'm hoping that when Hemingson does the reveal about the cliffhanger and shows us the kiss, that he'll do it in a video that could be added to the iTunes season pass package. That would be an awesome way to save every precious moment!
