we did see a flaw early on when Jack was put drinking with Javier instead of going home. Javier told him he would die be home rather than at the bar. We saw Rebecca confront him about his drinking in the hallway in their home. Jack told her he would stop drinking. We have not seen if that is indeed what he did.

I really enjoyed the look back at when they found out they were having triplets. I can’t even imagine that kind of stress! Still, I was a little surprised that Jack just didn’t tell his father the truth. Was it because he didn’t think the man would help or does he just not want his father to know anything about his life? Looks like we're going back to when the triplets are born next week. Anything that gives me more of Gerald McRaney is fine by me. Isn't it sad that the only thing I haven't enjoyed him on was Castle! As you said, nathanfan1, Kevin is a work in progress but I do like him. He’s trying to find the right path, but stumbling a lot along the way. Randall. I just love Randall. I loved how dealing with William’s boyfriend blindsided him. I thought it was realistic and oddly sweet. But my favorite was how he insisted that William should stay with them, even though he was dying, and not hide away somewhere to try and make it easier on everyone. Death is a part of life and as much as we might want to, it cannot be avoided. I'm curious to see if/how they'll write the kids' reaction to all of this. My husband kept expecting Toby to die, but I bet he was wrong. I win. I am amazed at the format of this show and how they write so much backstory to go with the present and make it all fit. I’m very curious to see how all of the converging stories play out as we head towards the end of the season.

Good point, Tycho. I forgot about that early drinking issue. Even with that though, Jack faced the problem and seemed to become the model father and husband.
I'm with you, PTVJ. More Gerald McRaney is a very good thing!

Did you notice when Jack left his Dad's house, he took his wedding ring out of his pocket and put it back on? So his dad doesn't even know he's married. He must consider his dad so toxic that he doesn't want him in any part of his life. I've seen shows where flashbacks fail miserably and are distracting and confusing but this show really makes it work. I can't wait to see what happens week after week.

Great catch, IBM! I didn't pick up on that but I bet you're completely right. There's no way he wanted his dad to know what was really happening in his life.

Finally watched the last episode. They said it would be on at 9 but they showed it an our earlier so I had to watch on my DVR. I'm just glad it recorded. Yes I think Jack doesn't want his toxic Dad to even know he married and is being a better father than he was to Jack. Sure looks like Dad is doing well and maybe has a new family? Wonder if we will be seeing interactions with them this spring?

No one has said much about Toby and Kate pledging their love for one another and implying wanting to marry. What do you think of this new turn?
I'd like to see them get to that point eventually but I don't think it's realistic to have it happen any time soon. I suspect it could be a rocky road to marital bliss because of personal demons.

I was glad to see Toby give her the chance to say what she needed to say while he played like he was sleeping. She would have never said those things if he was awake. At least their feelings are in the open. I don't see them rushing to the alter but hopefully, they will grow closer now?
We have not heard about Jacks Mom. Is she still alive? We have seen the Grandparents on her side.
I wonder if Jack ever told his Dad that he had 3 kids? I'm thinking that maybe Jacks Dad would have never accepted Randall so he never wanted him to know about his grandkids?
Do you think we will find out what happened to Jack before the season ends?

The jury is still out IMO on the Jack back story explaining what happened to him. I'm sure they went into this project with something in mind but with the success it's had and a likely season 2, I wonder if they'll deal with that issue a little differently and keep us in suspense.

ARGH!!! I'm not reading any posts here because I'm so far behind! I'm still watching (slowly but surely) and loving it! Last weekend I watched the episode where they took Randall to the "elite" school. Man, can that kid be mine?! I absolutely adore Kid-Randall. Adult Randall is great too but that kid.....
Anyway, hope to get all caught up real soon. I can't figure out how I have a 4-day weekend nearly every weekend and there's still not enough hours in the day!

As much as I'm intrigued by the use of various time frames in a typical episode, I thoroughly enjoyed tonight's, where we focused entirely on the day the kids were born. It was awesome to see Gerald McRaney so much and his acting pulled tears out of me.
I didn't pick up on the significance of the fireman in the beginning but liked the added depth that his back story brought to the show also.
I'm more curious than ever as to how Miguel and Rebecca ended up together after seeing that Miguel was certainly not acting like a committed father and husband when he tried his best to get Jack away from home and Rebecca. Miguel is one of the last main characters that we need to more about!
The scene where Rebecca is sitting in the rocker and talking to the babies was also pretty incredible.
The preview for next week looks like we have some major changes coming.

I also enjoyed the background on the doc and the fireman. Miguel is married right? And has kids? I can't remember how he has talked about his family? This was the first episode without the grown kids popping in even once.
With such a large cast it will be a way to not burn out the actors. They can get extra time off some weeks.

Great article. interesting that the creator left ABC studios for 20th century Fox. I have to say I'm glad as ABC studios was where Castle was from. They seem to have lost their way over there. Unlike other shows who have tried to do flashbacks. This show has found a much better seemless way to do this process.
