Just watched episode 4. I was right about the separation of Kate and Kevin not lasting too long. Now that Kate's made the break though, will she go back to being right by Kevin's side all the time? Again, I love Toby and how he looks at the real person. I'm glad we got some back story on his prior marriage and why it broke up.
It was very interesting that they went solidly into race issues this time. Not only was William the victim of profiling but we got to see how Randall, as a child, wanted to be with people who looked like him sometimes too. Kudos to Rebecca for swallowing her pride and doing what was best for her son! I was totally moved by the conversation between Randall and William where William told Randall he was doing everything right,
Once again, I see Jack as trying to be a great dad and meet the needs of all 3 kids. I'm still left wondering what happens to him!

Yeah I will be watching the Cubbies tonight and DVR this show for later. I look forward to each episode. Have you all gone onto the NBC site to catch great table talk after each episode? Some of the actors form each episode talk about how they felt about scenes. Sounds like they are enjoying their characters and the emotional connections to each.
"This is Us Companion Series" on the NBC app.

I was able to catch last night's show live for a change. I liked the way football was a theme woven through the generations and one of my favorite moments was seeing Toby put the Steelers hat on Jack's urn. Which brings me to the answer to my question about Jack. He did die and I look forward to learning how that came about. It makes me feel better now about Rebecca and Miguel being together. Kevin is a character that I've had a hard time warming up to. He seems very needy, insecure and self centered. However, the last scene with Randall's girls, where he shared his painting with them and explained a little about life and death, did a lot to improve my feelings toward him. Sadly, it looks like William has passed away. I was really liking all he added to the family and wanted him to be there longer. I hope we see some flashbacks in regards to his death in the future. And what about the news that Randall is going to be a dad again??? Loved the way that was revealed. I can't get enough of this show and, as Tycho mentioned, I've also enjoyed the round table discussions with the cast members afterwards.

I was glad to have the show back and enjoyed the new episode. I thought the way they mashed up the opening and closing with images of the various washing machines was really creative. There was so much insight into the family just in those machines. I'm worried about Kate and Toby if Toby is losing his drive to lose weight and Kate is trying to stay committed. I so love them as a couple but this could be a deal breaker. This was a great week for us better understanding the distance between Randall and Kevin. I feel like there was a breakthrough and I hope we see some positive things happening between them. I'm still anxious to get some sense of how things are between Kate and Randall because we've never seen them together at all. William and Beth and the 'adult' brownies was a HOOT! However, I was left with such an ominous feeling when the preview showed Beth calling Rebecca to confront her about knowing about William all along. I definitely want a better sense of Rebecca now, as an older woman, but I sure hate the thought of a major divide in the family. One thing is for certain, this show leaves me longing to know more every time!

Thanksgiving episode last night and, once again, they used the flashback to explain the present day. The root of the holiday traditions was an ill-fated road trip to Rebecca's parents' house and Jack was the awesome father that made it all happen. I totally adore his character! I'm ranking him right up there with Richard Castle for Best TV Dad and you know that's HIGH praise coming from me! I'm very sad that Kate feels she has to take a break from Toby because, as she herself admitted, he's the best thing to ever happen to her. The actress hit that emotional scene out of the park IMO. Now it'll be interesting to see if her new resolve actually happens. In a case like this, if the character really did have the surgery and lost a lot of weight, how could the actress's looks be changed that much without her also losing the weight? It was nice to see the growth in Kevin's character as he was able to think of someone other than himself as he made a concession to Miguel and offered pie to his guest. I haven't warmed up to his co-star friend/girlfriend yet. She seems to have a lot of baggage. The real heartbreak was Randall discovering that his mom had betrayed him and kept his father from him all his life. Talk about blowing up his world. I hurt for Randall. Judging from the sneak peek at next week's show, we'll get to see him trying to deal with this and, somehow, it appears he's able to talk to Jack, whom I thought was dead. Go figure! This show keeps me yearning for more.

This show just keeps getting better and better. If you haven't seen the table talk with the actors and director after each episode check it out. It's nice to hear how vested the actors are to their Characters.

I finally caught up before tomorrow night’s new episode. I really liked the Thanksgiving episode and watching them start their own tradition. I loved how saltines and cheese hotdogs, Police Academy 3, and the hike, all ended up becoming the family tradition. I was torn over Miguel asking to wear the Pilgrim hat. I understand that he wanted to feel a part of the family, but given how it started, I could see how difficult that would be for Kevin. I’m really curious to find out how and when Rebecca and Miguel got together. nathanfan1, I had the same thoughts as you. Will they actually go through with the gastric bypass surgery on the show, and if so, how will that work? I thought Randall’s reaction to finding out about his mother’s betrayal was spot on, especially since he realizes that if he hadn’t tracked his father down himself, he soon would have lost all opportunity to do so. tycho657, I haven’t checked out those table talk chats, but I hope to when I find the time. I remember back during season 2 of Castle when ABC had commentary from actors, writer,s directors, online after each episode. I always thought they were wonderful and I missed them as the show went on.

We might have the answer to the weight question. Carissa, at TV Fanatic, mentioned in her review that it's written into the actress's contract that she has to lose weight. Don't know if that'll mean surgery but it sounds like they want to make Kate's character successful at doing it one way or another. It'll be interesting.

The writers are so creative. I loved how they were able to have grown up Randall be able to talk to his Dad about this major revelation in his life. Even thought we see 4 or 5 different timelines we get to see the actors all work together in some scenes. Every episode I find myself tearing up. I love these characters and feel what they feel. ( I need to proof read when I post from my phone. I'm not sure what the autocorrect was trying to say??)

This was such a fantastic episode. Jack is such an amazing father and it's such a joy to watch him with the kids. I did love that Randall was able to speak to him in a somewhat realistic way, even if it was all in his head.
Up until this point, I couldn't quite figure out why Rebecca was so adamant about Randall never meeting his biological father, but in this episode it became clear that it was pure fear that took over. She was always terrified that either someone could take her son, or that Randall would choose his biological family over her and Jack. But I do wish that we would have seen more conversation between Randall and Rebecca. I would have liked to have heard her voice her fears to him.
I LOVED Kevin in this episode. I thought it was great when he called out Olivia's ex for mocking Kate with his constant "awws" as they watched the home videos and that he called out Olivia for trying to sabotage their relationship. Although Kevin can be self centered, I think he's far smarter and more insightful than his family, and even Kevin himself, sometimes gives him credit. Olivia was right on that point.
This show just gets better and better every week.

The actors apparently had some fun with the scene where Jack did pushups with little Randall on his back...

Those guys are in INCREDIBLE shape!!!!!!!!! How awesome was that display of strength and brotherhood? Remember how so many times there'd be a big emotional issue on Castle and they'd just barely touch on it? I used to get so frustrated that they didn't take the screen time to develop things because they focused on the case of the week. This is what I LOVE about This Is Us! The whole show can focus on an emotional issue, as they did last night. We got to see Randall working through some of his anger by dialoguing with his dad, and we also got to see Kevin and Kate's reactions. This was the first time all 3 of them were on screen together for any length of time as adults and it was interesting to see the dynamic. Kevin continues to grow in my estimation, although it's awkward at times. Kate's so REAL with her struggles and emotions and that always hits the mark with me. One thought I had last night though was that Jack's job must have been pretty lucrative if they could raise 3 kids and also afford a second property, even if it was an older cabin. At the very end, when Rebecca came to her door, that looked like quite the fine house too. I'm just wondering where the money came from. Looking forward to the Fall Finale next week. I'm going to miss the show though.

I also loved how Kate and Kevin escorted Randall to their mom's house and stood by the car while he went to the door. They weren't there to beat up on Mom, but they were there to back up their brother. It was nice to see them as "The Big Three" as adults. I think Jack would have been proud.

Don't know if that'll mean surgery but it sounds like they want to make Kate's character successful at doing it one way or another. It'll be interesting. Here is a link to an ET interview where Chrissy Metz talks about this issue. Apparently it is not written into the contract but she knows that that is where they want to go with her character so it gives her some good motivation to try and lose some weight. www.etonline.com/news/204299_chrissy_metz_calls_this_is_us_contractual_weight_loss_rumors_weird/
