I originally posted this here: possibilityforjoy.proboards.com/thread/629/castle-review-808?page=1&scrollTo=8598But on further reflection I have decided it needed its own thread, so here goes... The two month winter hiatus has begun. Hawley and Winters have exactly FOURTEEN EPISODES to knock our socks off if they want to recover from this mess with anywhere near the audience the show used to have. They have absolutely no credibility left with the core fandom or the casual viewers as far as I can tell and trust in their vision is at an all time low. (in my case near the negative digits) And by FOURTEEN EPISODES I mean they had better pull out all of the stops and knock it out of the park with every single one of them. They have hit us with all of the "filler" setup episodes in one batch, now they need to give us the meat they promised and really sock it to us. They, like Kate will have to earn back the trust they cost themselves. They've used up all of the goodwill they started with, now it's time for them to earn their pay. I am not at all confident, but they have kinda set the bar for themselves rather low, but the bare minimum will not cut it. Thoughts?

Very well put, Shutterbug. They have a long way to go to gain back the trust of the core fan base, and win back the casual fans. Fingers crossed but not holding my breath. From the interviews they have done since M&M Castle, it sounds like they are still clueless about how badly they screwed up.

I think this is the last season of my favorite show. I think the new powers that be have succeeded in screwing our show up so badly that there is not enough time to recover. ABC has never really been behind Castle as far as advertising but the show made it on its own with fantastic writing, producing, acting, etc. and huge help from the fandom. Those days are over. I totally agree with Bug and motowncf. The only way I see Castle having another season is if ABC has nothing better to offer. I hate what has happened this season and I hope I am wrong and I get to see another season of Castle but as Motown so eloquently stated, I am not holding my breath.

I wish I felt positive but based on the Hawley/Winter most recent PR double speak (using the word FUN at least 6 times I think, along with TWISTY....aargh), I really don't hold out much hope for a return to the Castle show and characters we once knew....and I still have that nagging fear that the ultimate goal still is for a spinoff where the FUN factor is something I'm just not interested in watching...

This pretty much sums up my feelings as well. I hate it but it is what it is.

This pretty much sums up my feelings as well. I hate it but it is what it is. Words cannot describe how much I hope they actually do bring their A game and deliver after the hiatus. I want to believe they didn't drag us down this road for nothing. I really do.

I think that says it all.
Actually they have about 4 shows to get back into the game,to capture the media to get the fans back...if the media can light a fire than they have a shot to pick up steam and capture the viewers back. But you are right, they have to totally be awesome right out of the gate. And then pour gas on the fire for the remainder of season. Their goal has to be a 1.5 demo or they are done. Also they need to win a night to gain every one's attention.
Momentum is the key here. I just don't know if they can turn an entire show and viewing audience around. What A mess.

I want to believe they didn't drag us down this road for nothing. I really do. Unfortunately, I don't think any socks will be flying off our feet this season, like the wonderful writing, that is a thing of the past. What concerns me about Castle, not only this season, but in previous ones as well, is the decline in writing. This show was sharp, concise, the writing drew the fans in because the stars could make the words shine. Now, it seems like the writing staff is pretty much the bottom of the barrel in terms of talent. Were there good scenes over the past few seasons? You bet your bippy there were, however put all those scenes together and you don't even get a half season of episodes. My bride and I have been watching other shows on TV and despite some being on the air far longer than Castle, the writing is so good, the story lines so fresh, that the actors are able to make the shows stand out, and keep the fans drawn in.
Sorry to say, SB, but I think the hoped for "A game" for Castle would generate no more than a "D" at best, in any other show's book.

Well, you guys are correct i think. They have a short amount of time to turn this around but if they stick to their plan (which they are, since shows were taped at the time of the last "fun" interview) Im not holding out hope. Watching them bicker, even if the audience knows its fake, infront of other people - possibly even family - could be as badly played out as the split. Sorry, but Im not putting much faith in the writing staff to be clever here. I worry how far they will go with this undercover ploy and will we see another 'Cloudy' debacle with a fake date thrown in for old times sake? (Something they seem to like to do-follow the old storylines). A quick bed scene at beginning and end with a few fight scenes wont cut it.

I must be stupid, although I have a PhD and 66 years of life experience, but I have me -as one of the first viewers in 1999 of Castle - very entertained with Season 8. And what do I read here for months & months. Complain, complain complain. It's here like a kindergarten. The children are angry because Mom and Dad do not listen to the children and do not offer them what the children ad nauseum want to hear. I was reminded of Ray Davies of The Kinks ... " It's time to stop all of your sobbing "

My mother, who is much older than yourself, taught me not to insult people simply because they disagree with me. If you are enjoying the season, I am happy for you. I'm glad somebody is. I may not share your opinion but I respect it. Disagreement does not have to degenerate into disrespect. One of the problems Castle is facing at present is that a large enough proportion of the show's target demographic aren't enjoying the show to the point where it could likely effect it's future and we are engaging in conversation on this site about why.

When I read those last interviews I kind of knew the show was doomed. Yes I know there are some fans that are enjoying season 8. I don't happen to be one. I read how they are going to "pretend" to be broken up again and once again this season we're going to repeat something we have already done. And to make matters worse I didn't like it the first time. This is just not my opinion. I got a lot of my friends watching and they are feeling just like me. Will I watch til the bitter end? Yes. Am I sad? Yes. Wish we could just have a do over starting 6x22.
