Its back for its 2nd season. I didn't need the Kleenex tonight but it was close. I marvel at the amazing writing for this show. They put together time lines seeemlessly to create the narrative.
I spied someone from Castle. The guy who was in charge of the auditions was the guy from Scotland Yard who made Castle so jeleous.
Jon H was in a couple of scenes. Now that he is a series regular we should be seeing him more.
We we did get more information about Jacks death tonight.
Anyone else watching this this show want to chime in with your thoughts?

I had to watch and review Bull, so there wasn't time to watch this too, but we recorded it. Hopefully I'll get to check it out tonight and share my thoughts. Until then, I'll stay away from this thread so I'm not spoiled!

I've been waiting for this premier for 6 months! It sure didn't disappoint me in any way. I loved that they started with it being the kids' birthday again, and they did a great job of moving every one of the story lines along. I'd read that they were planning on keeping William's character to be used in flashbacks and it was wonderful the way they did that last night. William and Beth has such a cool relationship and to use his poetry as a voice-over was moving. I shed a tear when Beth gave Randall the bound collection of poems! I was so happy to see Randall realize that he was forcing his wishes on Beth and that it wasn't right. I just love his character! The twist of Beth suggesting an older child was definitely a shock to me. I'm very interested in seeing where they go with this.
I also loved the growth we saw in Kate's character. The triangle with Kate, Kevin and Toby has the potential to be a big issue but they dealt with it head on and it seemed that all 3 of them realized that they need to establish new norms and parameters. The best part was when Kate told the guys that she didn't need to be coddled or cared for by either of them. You go girl! The way she handled the audition rejection showed that she's taken a huge leap in believing in herself.
Kevin is showing a lot more maturity too, especially how he handled the news that Sophie (? I'm not sure I remember her name!) wasn't coming for his birthday. When she showed up at the end, I choked up again!
Finally, the Jack and Rebecca story line. I appreciated how realistic it was with them trying to be upfront with the kids and also with Rebecca not being instantly ready to move on. However, I love that she came to Miguel's house to bring Jack home. His confession about the alcoholism didn't really surprise me because we've seen hints of it but what DID surprise me was that Rebecca stayed at the door and then insisted that he come home. That was well done. It broke my heart when he closed the door on her face and I figured that was the end of the scene. So happy it wasn't!
The big reveal about Jack's death was a shocker. I guess I presumed it would be a car crash since we'd seen him driving drunk last season. Having it be a fire does 2 things. We feel we have a major piece of the puzzle but I'm still dying to know the details. Great writing! The other thing I'm dying to know is why Kate has felt she was responsible for his death all these years. Guess there's no problem with keeping me interested! They also showed Miguel being there to support the family in their time of crisis so I can see that opening doors to he and Rebecca forging their own relationship down the road. I've always wondered how long they've been married.
Can't wait to enjoy this new season!

-SPOILERS- I feel so sorry for Toby. He's like a 3rd wheel when he's out with his girlfriend! It sounds like they are going to work on that so hopefully Kevin isn't barging in all the time.
I was so proud of Kate for overcoming her feeling of not being worthy enough because of her size and going back to audition and then refusing to be dismissed. After she found out her singing wasn't good enough, it put a spark in her to really work and get good enough. It actually gave her some confidence that she wasn't judged on her size but on her singing voice.
Randall is so into the adoption idea, he doesn't seem interested in what anyone else thinks. He's quit his job and is staying home and consumed with adopting. Does Beth want to adopt? Does she want to be the breadwinner? She doesn't look happy about anything. She doesn't seem at all like the type of woman that is going to get steamrolled into doing something she doesn't want to do so I was kind of confused as to what was going on. I was shocked when she brought up the idea of bringing an older much needier child into their lives.
Life isn't easily fixed. Jack tried to get Rebecca a local gig but they were booked up and not interested. I was so glad she went to Miguel's and then forced Jack to come home with her after he came clean with her about his drinking problem. You think they'll be OK but then they cut to the night Jack dies. How soon is that? Exactly what happened? They definitely make us keep tuning in.

Oh, this premiere was so good! There wasn’t one aspect I didn’t enjoy. It’s great to see Kate begin to come into her own. I also liked that they didn’t make it easy for her. Amber as a backup singer is completely realistic. The competition in the music industry is fierce! There are incredibly talented people who never make it big. But that doesn’t mean Kate can’t get better, and I loved that she took ownership of that and didn’t just slink back home and lick her wounds. Yes, Kate, Kevin, and Toby will have to work out a new dynamic, but Toby confronted it head on and so did Kevin. No one is right or wrong here, but they’re adult enough to realize they’ll have to make some adjustments to make things work. I’m thrilled that Kevin and Sophie are still together. They’re a cute couple. Even though I knew that William was in Beth’s head, I loved that scene. I had to laugh when she said she could have lived without The Manny in her basement for a year. Adopting a child is a HUGE decision and it was wonderful to see it bring out Randall and Beth's imperfections. Adopting an older child will have an entirely new set of complications, especially since they have two young children already, but I look forward to seeing how they will deal with that. On to Jack and Rebecca…I’ve always liked them but I don’t think I ever loved them until this episode. My only issue was the way they told the teens that Jack was staying at Miguel’s. Meeting at a public place for a big talk just added to the doomsday feel for the kids. If the true goal was to spend a few days apart to just get some space and cool off, I thought they could have handled that better and not upset their kids quite so much. But I loved it when Jack admitted that he’s been hiding his drinking and that he needed to fix it. Being honest and taking responsibility for such a thing is a huge step, but I loved it even more when Rebecca told him that they handle problems together and made him come home. Watching Rebecca break down in tears in the car, with the plastic bag with Jack’s belongings on the back seat reduced me to tears. I knew we were going to see something about Jack’s death and yet I was still absolutely crushed by it. This season premiere was even better than I’d hoped. I can’t wait to see more.

Tycho, that ew interview was fantastic! Dan Fogelman is wonderful to talk to. He's a straight shooter and is so totally committed to this story. I'm also incredibly impressed with how well the whole story is already developed in his head. The man is amazing! I just can't wait to see how it all unfolds,

As usual, I loved every minute of the episode. I absolutely love how the characters confront the issues in their lives. It was great to hear Kate finally air her feelings about Rebecca. I can't say I side with either one of them, personally, because I think they both have had a hand in things not being so great between them. I also think it's been made very clear that Kate was daddy's girl all along.
Boy, I am really liking Kevin these days! Sophie seems to bring out the best in him and he's grown by leaps and bounds. I loved his conversation with Beth in the trailer. I also have to make a shallow comment - HOLY SMOKIN' HOT BODY!!!!!!!!! WHEW!
It's good to see a flaw in Jack and it's also good to see his resolve to be a better man for Rebecca and his family. It took a boatload of courage to tell Kate about his drinking problem. We've seen glimpses of his younger years and dealing with an alcoholic and abusive father, but I hope they make that an even stronger story line this season because it obviously had a huge impact on him. There was also a glance back at his time in the military and I wonder if we'll see more of a connection there as well.
Love Toby to death and the way he can use humor in tough situations. His statement to Rebecca that he was Team Kate all the way, made me love him even more.
I've been a bit surprised by Beth's enthusiasm for taking in an older child. I can sure understand Randall's apprehension about it. I'm afraid it's going to be a rocky road, not only for them but also for their kids. We'll see.

I finally got to watch the second episode. Like you nathanfan1, I love Kevin this season. He’s grown so much and Sophie brings the best out in him. His conversation with Beth made me laugh out loud. Little did she know that Kevin was helping Randall woo her all those years ago. I’m also a little concerned over Beth’s seemingly blind enthusiasm over fostering or adopting an older child. Not that I’m against the idea, the exact opposite, but I do think it is something she and Randall should carefully research, especially with their own two young girls being a part of the equation. Personally, I would have a whole lot of questions I’d want answered before I made that leap. Kate and Rebecca are frustrating but realistically so. And I thought Toby’s response to Rebecca was spot on. Even if he feels that Kate isn’t always in the right, he has to handle that with Kate, not by taking sides. Jack’s struggles were heartbreaking. Addiction is a horribly difficult thing to try and manage, and I thought Jack’s fight to find a way to not take a drink was pretty realistic. So far this season is looking even better than the first.

B. "This is us" is now one of the top rated shows. The network will place it so it can help out other shows. Blindspot had slipped in the ratings so it will lose its good spot. I'm just glad they are still on the air as I do enjoy it.

This weeks episode dealt with racism. I thought it was well done. There are many people who don't realize that the things they say are hurtful. My hope is that this opened up a few eyes to this issue. Our country is struggling with issues related to this at this time. We adopted a daughter from Korea. I have lived thru this for many years with her. This show continues to amaze me with the well written scripts.

Totally agree, Tycho. They deal with very real issues and they do it very effectively. Trying to explain racism to a 10 year old is no easy task - especially when you're speaking about the kid's grandmother.
Speaking of issues - with the reveal that Kate is pregnant, I can't help but wonder if she'll end up losing the pregnancy. On one hand, there would be plenty of story possibilities if she and Toby do indeed have a child, but on the other hand, they could go deep into Kate's character and also touch a chord with a whole lot of people if she loses the baby. Either way, I have no doubt that it'll be well done.
