"Need To Know", the title of tonight's episode and we need to know what you think afterwards!
I'll say more tomorrow, but just have to say that I really enjoyed this episode. Castle and Kate were absolutely adorable. Love how open and comfortable they are with each other now. So awesome to watch Kate be true to herself and her code of conduct. She was completely capable of being a federal agent. She proved that. She just couldn't deny herself and play by their rules. Way to go, Kate!
In the end it was Kate being true to what she believes. She is who she is and no job can change that. Welcome back beautiful.
A couple of thoughts. Will sticking to her principals be enough to overcome any sense of regret because she got fired? Clearly, she was not expecting that to happen. Also, more philosophically, in what situations, if any, does the greater good outweigh what potentially happens to an individual?
I'm still kind of reeling from that ending but I'll comment on that later. It felt good to have more fun in this episode and there were several bits that left me giggling. It started with Castle watching Espo decline his call on live TV and then I loved the physical comedy of Espo clotheslining Castle with the crime tape. The whole first half was humorous with Ryan and Espo pushing Castle to prove his loyalty to them and not Kate and the feds. Loved the agent calling Espo a nitwit too! Another fun moment was when it was pointed out that the Heat Wave movie had gone straight to DVD. One of my favorite lines was when Ryan told Castle, "Your whole relationship is built on your boundary pushing."
The story line about Ryan being such a big fan of the TV show was well done and carried through right to the end. Seamus looked like major nerd in that hat! It was sweet that he was able to catch Espo admitting that he'd seen the show, despite how down on it he was.
I liked the new character, Sully, despite what he's done to Kate's desk. He's a slob but he definitely was a workhorse, finding evidence and helping move the case along. He seems like he's genuinely trying and the guys seem to back him up too. I doubt that we'll see a lot of him but I won't mind a bit more.
I have several comments about the case. It was nice to see the consistency of Ryan, Espo and Gates being ticked that the feds would just swoop in and take over their case, even though Kate was a part of it. It certainly served to highlight the change for Kate and it was apparent that it was difficult for her to do that to her team. I liked that they, again, showed her having philosophical issues with her job and it felt good to see her act against that by giving Castle the flash drive and then calling in the anonymous tip. I thought the most poignant scene in that regard was when Gates perfectly vocalizes what has always been Kate's mantra - that the victim deserves justice. Even though Kate succeeds in convincing McCord to continue investigating at that point, it still becomes apparent that McCord has come to accept the demand of her job and she simply moves on. Kate can't do that and Castle loves her even more for it. The jury is still out for me in regards to Kate getting fired at the end. I want to see what we get next week before I form a definite opinion. On one hand, I thought it was crystal clear that Kate was not willing to compromise her sense of justice but I wanted HER to make a conscious decision to leave the job and not have it done for her, so I'll wait and see how it's all handled next week. This ending left me much more anxious for the next episode than the cliffhangers typically do!
Lastly, (saved the best for last!) the Caskett moments were just precious! That opening pillow talk scene was so romantic and deliciously suggestive but it still had some sad overtones of them being separated and missing each other terribly. They really make me feel the frustration. I loved that they texted each other to meet in the break room at the precinct. That ending scene was also a shipper's dream come true! Cuddled on the couch and finally alone, I loved how Castle was gently touching Kate and so proud of her. I also loved that when Castle said they needed to talk, Kate's reaction was downright eager. What a change from past seasons! Previously, Kate would have been on edge and gun shy but now she seems so willing and open when it comes to communicating. It does my heart good! The icing on the cake is when she jumps into Castle's arms and kisses him senseless over getting them a place where they can live together. I think one of the things that has made this whole DC arc tolerable for me is that no matter what has happened, I have felt that both Kate and Castle are 100% committed to each other and to making their relationship work. Have I mentioned that I LOVE THIS SHOW?

I loved this episode. The Caskett moments were just priceless. I did not like Beckett being fired but I am glad that DC is behind us and we can just get back to her and Castle working together like the old days. From start to finish, NEED TO KNOW, 6X03, is another, amazing CASTLE episode!!! Love for all parts and aspects of our CASTLE families and partners abounds, along with significant decisions, along with thoughtful and thought provoking “gifts” and loving, caring, touching moments, including for CASKETT!!! Warmth and wit underlie our DD’s “great love story” and that of the family/ies and teams with whom they work!!! Writer Elizabeth BEALL and director Larry SHAW lead AWM’s incredible entire team of cast and crew this week!!! Stana and Nathan, as always, rock every scene, together or apart—and Jon, Seamus, Martha, Molly, Penny, Joshua BITTON, and guest star, Lisa EDELSTEIN, also “deliver” perfectly!!! The following are some of the fun, plot and character development, and joy for me!!!
Kate and Rick share love eyeballs and more in their sweet and sexy phone chat!!! Kate’s expressions reveal her frustrations, when the 12th’s case becomes the Fed’s case with her reluctant “not at liberty to say,” “need to know”—at the same time she shows her delight in working with her beloved Rick and 12th Precinct team, while sharing fed duties with Agent McCORD!!!
Pi dispenses smoothies to Alexis’ delight!!! Martha dispenses wisdom, humor, love, encouragement, and support while encouraging Rick to down his kale smoothie!!!
Kate’s scruples; sense of justice and mission to protect the victims, leads to her sharing with CASTLE a flash drive containing information critical to the precinct’s solving the REYNOLDS murder and releasing to the press information, which assures that the Russian mob niece is not bait but is safe!!!
Who can resist chuckling when ESPO, on live TV no less, rejects Rick’s phone call and when Rick is stymied by and then tangles with crime scene tape—call backs to his earliest crime-solving ventures with Kate!!! Then, we get to hear: PERLMUTTER: Mr. CASTLE, “You’re back but not by popular demand,” and GATES: “…Mr. CASTLE, “You are not NYPD, and you no longer have a reason for being here.”
ESPO speaks of “NYPD coffee;” and we see Detective Grant "Sully" SULLIVAN'S awe of and appreciation for BECKETT’S accomplishments, as well as his startlingly messy desk, formerly Kate’s elephant-decked neat workspace!!! ESPO’S describes Kate as Judas and disdains the TV show, which RYAN had loved and still calls a gem--not that ESPO has seen it!!! Indeed--touché--Rick's relationship with Kate involves boundary pushing!!!
Happily texting one another to meet in the break room, Kate will not be “CASTLED” by the latte bribe from her “tool” Rick, whom he self-describes as her most valuable crime-solving asset, who finds the guns, whereupon ESPO, later termed, “Mario LOPEZ,” by the CIA Agent, gets to proclaim to Agent McCORD, “Not so fast, Clarisse!!!”
In the warehouse, CASTLE-described as possibly “teeming with blood-thirsty Cossacks,” the guns are found via chicken poop by the 12th team or by using various technologies for Feds Kate and Rachel, who have traced the murder victim’s movements!!! However—trump card—the CIA, for whom the murder victim was working, has top jurisdiction!!!
Of course, Rick knows of Anton RENKOFF/OV, most notorious gangster in Russia!!! This mobster uses Too Cool for School’s popularity there and production of a new show version to cover gun-smuggling!!! Kate cannot deny Svetlana RENKOFF/OV, innocent, crime family niece, the new, safe life, her love, REYNOLDS had envisioned for the two of them!!!
Charlie REYNOLD’S agent stands out for me, like other, guest stars with small, parts, which add humor and are significant and/or vital to plot and/or character development: HE’S DEAD; SHE’S DEAD’S” Penny, wide-eyed daughter of the murdered psychic, who has “a little bit” of what her “mother had,” and who warns BECKETT, after her/Penny’s dream of the importance of an Alexander, who “may one day save your life;” ONCE UPON A TIME’S young, wide-eyed playwright, assisting with Martha’s fairy tale; and SIGNIFICANT OTHER’S divorcee, who smashes and/or slashes platters, vases, and paintings!!!
GATES “urges” her team, now including CASTLE, to continue their “paper work” on the REYNOLDS murder, which GATES values solving—after all, this is “not my first rodeo with the Feds”!!! She even encourages BECKETT to not be a stranger at the precinct, to which Kate responds, “Yes, Sir”!!!
At the episode’s conclusion, Rick has remedied the crowded loft situation, treating Martha, Alexis, and Pi to a yoga retreat!!! Kate and Rick happily cuddling on a loft sofa, discuss, with wonderful and open communication, the difficulties of their bi-city relationship when Kate is surprised at, thrilled over, and appreciative of Rick’s gift of their own, D.C. apartment with “little home office,” as he can write from anywhere!!! Rachel’s enters, complimenting Kate’s scruples, once Rachel’s own, and Kate’s work as one of the best agents with whom Rachel has worked—then, as her federal superiors have decreed, Rachel fires BECKETT!!!
Now, what?!!! Next week, our DD must cope with Rick’s NUMBER ONE FAN!!!
Nathanfan, I did not catch the HEAT WAVE movie straight to DVD line!!! Oh, the need to re-watch!!!
Great recaps everyone!
I was thoroughly entertained by this episode, particularly because I love humor amongst drama and this ep did it in spades....starting almost from the getgo (after we witness Kate (sigh, that woman is sooooo pretty) and Castle (sigh, so handsome....and "sprinkling" Kate's phone kiss on his face ) doing their adorable pillow talk) with Castle sitting bolt upright in bed with the loud whirring in the background and muttering a disgusted "PI" ... The guys back to their witty and funny camaraderie and funny putdowns... the faces that Espo made throughout were soooo funny....all the boys were...Ryan...Perlmutter...and I really like Sully...it would be nice to see more of him. Martha's wisdom and wit again shining through. There were just so many funny and love-filled moments.
The way Kate bounded so eagerly into the coffee room after Castle texted her, she looked soooooo HAPPY, like a little kid! .... only to get "Castled"
One funny moment that I don't think has been mentioned yet was when they all had their guns trained on each other, which seemed to go on forever....when they finally put their guns down I'm pretty sure McCord quietly muttered "Thank God...my arms" .... I hear ya, honey!
Sooooo surprised by the ending ... and is it really the end? Can't wait to see how this all plays out.

I believe Seamus said "Thank God...my arms." In a tweet last night, he said it was an off camera ad lib, and he did not know he was being recorded.

Beckett and Gates were both amazing in my opinion. We always knew Gates was an honorable person with a surplus of integrity. But to see first-hand the degree to which she echos Kate's philosophy about honoring the victim was something we never really had confirmed quite so clearly before -- and it was just one more reminder of the rare privilege Kate had of working with like-minded colleagues.
We also saw several other examples of Kate recognizing she no longer enjoys that privilege, and she's no longer in a position to influence the priorities of her job. McCord seemed to have long ago accepted her role as a cog in a much bigger wheel. She does her job and moves on. Kate isn't used to that. She's not used to being out of the loop -- and she doesn't like it. But let's face it, the job was still really cool. Even though we didn't get to see a lot of it, it's clear she was learning a lot about being a better investigator and honing her skills both in the office and in the field. Despite it's flaws, it was still a federal job working on huge cases -- with the potential to eventually be on of the people calling the shots some day. Every new job requires adjustments and compromises, and Kate hadn't yet given up on finding a balance between what she was expected to do and be, and what her own personal moral compass would allow. She wasn't quite ready to throw in the towel, because there were still compelling benefits to being a fed.
Which is why she was so shocked at the end when McCord dropped the bomb. Kate's biggest mistake was in thinking she could get away with the same stuff she always had -- as long as the ends justified the means. Remember in L.A., she told Castle that Montgomery really could fire her for defying orders? She called his bluff and lived to tell about it because they got the bad guy (and Montgomery never could stand up to her)? Remember when she and Castle defied Homeland Security and found themselves locked in a freezer? They weren't subsequently arrested because they found the bomb and secured a new lead. Time and again, Kate had pushed the boundaries of her orders without ever really suffering consequences. Sure she was suspended in Always, but I think she even saw that as a small price to pay -- even a formality -- given that Maddox was dead and Bracken was neutralized.
So when she gave Castle the flash drive and later called the media, she didn't consider it any different than what she'd always done. Part of it was no doubt ego. She was back in her old neighborhood wanting to fit in again among her friends and colleagues. And there's no denying her altruism. She had to do the right thing. Who wouldn't see that?
Well, she learned that DC is not New York. She's not indispensable, and she doesn't have the established relationships to help her out of water that hot. From the perspective of her superiors, if they can't trust her to follow orders on a relatively small-time case, how could they trust her on something really big? And the stage had already been set: She got in hot water for leaving classified pictures where a civilian could (and did) find them. Her fiance became intimately involved in a case. She confronted the Secretary of Defense against orders. In her short time there, she might have gotten the job done and proved her skill, but she also proved she's not cut out for taking orders without question, and that's what the job demands. In the end, her greatest strength, as a critical, original thinker, turned out to be her biggest detriment.
So I'm okay with her being fired. It will be a blow, but she'll see that autonomy and justice are more important to her than the size and impact of the case. It might take a little while, but she'll accept that DC just did first what she would eventually have had to do -- let go.
Besides, Castle is there to catch her.
Steve Urkel anyone? LoL!
Love the episode. Love season 6 so far. I thought season 5 started slowly and I’m guessing my lamentations from last year were heard as they’ve hit the ground running this year. It’s been a fun right. The banter is back. The love eyeballs are back. Caskett is back and they truly look like a couple this year and I love how at ease Nathan and Stana are during intimate moments like sitting on the sofa talking. When I complained of the lack of affection in season 5 and I asked for small moments that would not take away from the murder mystery of the show, they delivered in season 6. Perfectly balanced. What Moonlighting Curse?
Very much enjoyed the light heartedness of this episode. After racing to find the antidote for Castle in Dreamworld and feeling terror stricken and anxious, knowing full well they won’t kill Rick off the show, I was relieved to watch a fun episode that sorta paralleled the one where Castle and Beckett were betting against Espo and Ryan as to who would solve the mystery first. I had a great time watching Rick’s loyalty pulled in both directions in this Fed vs NYPD episode.
And I love Lisa Edelstein. I don’t think McCord is as popular as Agent Shaw as neither Kate nor Rick warmed up to her. I do hope to see her back doing something amazing. I didn’t think her character was given a chance to show how badass she could be. Maybe later?
And speaking of McCord, I’m hoping to see her in the next episode (don’t tell me if she is). I knew Lisa signed up for 3 episodes and near the end when I didn’t see a goodbye scene like we did with Agent Shaw I expected to see her again before the very end. When Kate revealed that she leaked the info to the press, I had a heavy hunch that McCord would show up and either arrest her or let her go.
Anyhow, loved it. Love season 6. Looking forward to next Monday.

Great episode I enjoyed all of it. I did like the storyline and everyone working at the precinct. It was the eye of the storm it seems where we just surivived one life death, and then next week promo. It was a breath of fresh air and I was very entertained and happy. I thought that the reenactment of Save by the Bell was kinda cheesy but it was fun watching Slater, Screech. and I guess Jessie. That show took my Saturday mornings I watched it every weekend. I would watch the re runs every single day. My friends and I would act out the episode where the three girls do a music video. We would sing the song and jump around like them it was fun.
The Caskett moments were just precious. The phone pillow talk was too cute.
When Castle handed her that key I thought she was going to turn to him and say she quit the FBI. I thought that after what they did to that girl and the FBI didn't care about the victim that Beckett would turn in her fed badge. I jumped and hollered when McCord came there and fired her. I hate that she was fired but Kate does not need to be working at a place like that. She cares to much about the people to do a job that allows things to happen and covers it up. Some people can sleep thru the night and some cant and I think the Feds did her a favor. She is very qualified to work for the FBI, she can do anything. I am glad she was let go because of integrity rather then she was not doing her job well enough. I am ok with her being fired for doing the right thing.
I melted when Antonio came on the screen. I hate that he was the killer. I was sceaming NOOOOOO not my Antonio. LOL.. He is too hot to be in prison.
I give this episode a B+
Angie, great insights into Kate's mindset and motivations! I especially like how you connected her actions in this episode to things she'd done in the past and gotten away with because the end justified the means. There's no doubt that this whole arc has really pushed her character to grow and I applaud the creative team for going there.
Fjordmom, I'm so glad you mentioned Seamus' arm comment! I forgot to include that and it was a classic example of the deadpan humor we often get. It would have been great to see his face when he said it but at least they kept the audio in. I also read among Seamus' comments that Nathan was the one who came up with the idea for Espo to smack him in the face with the crime scene tape. All 3 of those guys are just naturals at coming up with the genuinely funny bits and what I've always appreciated the most about the humor on Castle is that it's not sexual or potty humor. They manage to find the fun in the everyday situations.

Yes this was indeed a great episode and the season has started off with a bang cannot wait until next Monday to see how Beckett gets her old job back. I want her to be back in charge ago. I love how she refers to Ryan and Espo as her boys, I also miss Lanie. She is Kate's friend so with her being back at the 12th we should see Lanie shortly. Oct 8, 2013 14:56:46 GMT -5 @daph said:

I just wanted to add that I very much enjoyed seeing Lisa Edelstein on the show. I think McCord had it rougher than Agent Shaw. First off, Castle was enamored with McCord or her gadgets. Second, McCord and Beckett were still trying to gel as partners before Kate's untimely firing. I do hope to see her again.
