Are you excited to get some answers? I know I sure am. Let's hope we feel satisfied at the end. Please come back and discuss the mystery.
Very good ep. Really moved. fun trying to see how it all fit together. Happy Cadtle was tangential, in the sense I really didn't want him to be military or CIA.
We really enjoyed the show. A wonderfully done episode. We got our answers with plenty of family and Caskett goodness.
Some answers, but not all....which I guess is what AM and Amann pretty much said in all their interviews.
Really convoluted contrivance to put all that together...is that really the story they had in mind when they wrote 6x23?
Not sure what to think of this at this point.....this old classmate from his prep school days suddenly comes out of the woodwork and demands that Castle come to his assistance?
While I have been looking forward to seeing how they were going to explain Castle's disappearance, not sure this particular story really works for me. I guess at this point I'd really like to know the rest of the story. From what we learned tonight, there has to be a lot more going on....what was so terrible that Castle asked to have his memories of it erased? How/where did he get shot? What was the deal with him camping out on that beach? How did he end up in that dinghy?
Storyline issues aside, I do love when Nathan gets to show his more serious side. While he is good at the comedy, he absolutely shines in the more dramatic episodes. And Stana played all the right notes with Kate, wanting to support him but at the same time trying to keep him grounded and not letting his imagination run away with him.
I also liked seeing Kate refer Castle to go see Dr. Burke; it's nice to see that she recognized his ability to help Castle try to understand what was going on in his head; she often didn't want to follow Dr. Burke's direction in regard to her own issues, but she apparently came to recognize that the guy is a good therapist.
So, this guy from Faircroft Prep that Castle won the debate trophy with, is ex- Al Qaida. He's willing to give info to the CIA but his original contact is killed. The one person he thinks of that he can trust is his old high school friend. The CIA wants this guys intel, so they kidnap Castle, take him to Thailand to rescue this guy, and once the CIA has this guys intel, it is used to stop a bunch to terrorists. Then they erase Castle's memory because he was involved in something that was top secret.
CRAZY!!!!!!!! Now I want to know what Castle actually did for those two months. :-)
One complaint. Can we please stop going the lone wolf route. Would it have been so terrible for Kate to be part of that sequence and eliminate the "please stop using this plot device" feeling I could not escape.
More thoughts tomorrow on why this does nothing to make sense of 6x23.
So now I am thinking this was written with the intent of giving you the facts in case the show is canceled. Rick and Kate again separate and do their thing and in the end share a story and some wine.I guess, I wanted more. This was a dumb plot and an equally dumb story line. This cost us a wedding? It wasn't worth the wait. Instead of Rick punching punching out the guy, maybe he should have punched Marlowe.
What clues from 6-23 did we miss? Rogan O'Leary? A Vegas Marriage? A Mobster? 6x23 was a loser. Sorry. It was a worthless episode and now I feel justified in feeling cheated that they didn't get married. What storyline? Rick saves the world? Couldn't they have done something better? And next week the two are separated again. Probably a great episode, but they are slowly moving these two away from each other. Is this why Kate will question her life in the season or series finale?
All I will say is, that yes it was a good episode. But yes, I was disappointed.
I am sorry you guys, but I wanted more...so much more. So now we have three episodes left.
Well, I have to say that I'm satisfied for now, much the same as Castle expressed in that last scene. I think I just have to accept that it's a bit of an outlandish story, especially the fact that Castle is the guy called upon to be trusted by this Al Qaida deserter. All the back story about an Al Qaida defector and a CIA handler and an impending terrorist strike is very believable and I thought it unfolded quite well. It just seems a bit of a stretch that Castle was the go-to guy.
I REALLY liked the way the whole family unit reacted to this. The scenes with Martha and Alexis expressing their concerns were great. I loved Martha seeking Kate out at the precinct and Kate assuring her that she'd be there for Castle through it all. I also loved Alexis confronting Castle and asking that he let her in. It was done very maturely and showcased the relationship of trust that Castle and Alexis have rebuilt. Towards the end, it was nice that we got a scene of Castle telling Martha and Alexis what he could.
Best of all was the way Kate handled everything, from the morning at the loft when she pushed for Castle to be honest with her and she recommended Dr. Burke, to the emotional ending when she came rushing into the loft and then expressed her satisfaction with the new knowledge of what happened. Through it all, Kate was supportive of her husband but also tried to keep an open mind to various possibilities.
I found that brief exchange between Espo and Castle to be very revealing. Espo tells Castle to his face that he doubts his story about having no memory of those 2 months and I think that goes a long way towards explaining the attitude that Espo's had towards Castle at various times this season. We know how loyal Espo is to Kate and I think it may go back to Espo feeling Castle really did leave her at the altar. I wonder if we'll see any change in that attitude now that Espo knows it was real.
I thought Nathan did a fine job with his facial expressions tonight. There were a lot of those silent moments when he had to show his emotions purely through his face and he nailed it every time.
There's still a boatload of unanswered questions - How did Castle get shot? Why did all of this take 2 months? How did Castle end up in the dinghy? Why was Castle in the tent on the beach? Why was Castle in Montreal? What does this have to do with the money drop we saw Castle make on the video? Why did Castle make the videos for Kate and Martha and Alexis saying goodbye? What happened in Hollander's Woods? I felt this answered the part of the mystery concerning why Castle was abducted on his wedding day but it sure doesn't explain 2 months if that terror attack was imminent and it also doesn't seem anywhere near bad enough that Castle would have asked to have it erased from his memory. I wonder if the finale will clear all of this up or if we'll just get another chunk. I guess, if it means a season 8, I'm in favor of just getting another chunk!
I enjoyed the episode as I watched it. Good Caskett moments. Good family moments. But, it just makes 6x23 seem even worse (if that was possible for me). My issue with 6x23 was not the missed wedding, but with the story that preceded the wedding. And, now we know none of that story had anything to do with the abduction. So, what was the point? Just a wasted opportunity.
I agree with all of nathanfan1's questions. I would add why didn't the CIA just ask him to help? Seems like it would have been much easier. Also, if time was so crucial what reason could there possibly have been to go to NYC (a good two hour drive from the Hamptons and possibly more) for a money drop?
And once more, please stop with the lone wolf plot device. It is becoming laughable.
Most episodes I come to like better over time. Not sure that is going to be the case with this episode.

One of the worst written episodes of Castle yet.I am still wrestling with my thoughts about this season in general and continue to feel a little unsettled about everything...hard to pinpoint...and this ep. was too out there for me, talk about throwing in all the cliches ,CIA, Al-Qaeda, saving the world...sorry, I'm pretty good at suspending disbelief for a really good story, but this just didn't cut it. And I suspect it's not entirely the truth.
When the future of the show, actors, et al are decided, perhaps it will make more sense, but right now I still feel like there really is no clear focus...they're trying to cover all the bases, which is understandable to a point, but I don't like this feeling of being jerked around, and I trust NOTHING that the showrunners say about future episodes and what will be happening. Season 8? Stana? Marlowe? Amann? Derrick Storm? Philip Marlowe?
Where's Paul Harvey?....I want the rest of the story.
Whew, that was kind of negative...sorry, but I am so disappointed at the wasted talent and opportunities.

Here is a question. If they chose Rick to be Bilal's contact because he was famous and so they wouldn't kill him, then why did they shoot him and then a few weeks later leave him in a dingy to die? If the coast guard had not spotted him he would have died right? And why make the videos saying goodbye if he didn't think he was going to die? I think they might need more than one season to solve this mystery. Unless we get a book with answers I doubt we will every know what happened.
I got the impression that David Amann was told he had one episode to tell his 3 season ark before he left and he tried to jam in as much information as he could in 42 minutes. Yes we did get kind of an explanation for his missing time but to me we were left with more questions than answers.
Yeah I still think they were wrong to not give the fandom the wedding then snatch Rick up or just ask him. He would have helped out and Kate would have gone along too if it meant helping so many people.
*snip*

I think at this point putting this whole mythology (a word I hate now) arc into the dinghy and setting it adrift in the Bermuda triangle might be in order.
What's that cliche.... if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all....... or, errr, focus on the positive..... *thinking* ...........................................................................................................................
.......... okay...... Got something....
I enjoyed the family moments, to a degree, and, as always, stellar acting.
There.
On a side note, I wonder. Do Nathan & Stana ever look at a script and go, "what the heck?"
It'd be nice, at this stage of the game, if they had some say in the process. At least over their characters and the two of them as a couple.
Just thinking out loud.
Watched again. Similar reaction as last night. Liked it through Castle going alone. Until that point, I thought it was really well done. Then I felt like oh crap, not again. Then I found the high school friend joined Terrorist group a bit much. Then all the other stuff I've discussed. But thought the first 2/3 was really good.
So my thoughts on last night's episode. To be truly honest, I neither really liked it nor disliked it. Despite the explanation being a bit far fetched and leaving even more questions than answers, I am willing to accept it, for now. I, like others have stated, feel there is probably more to this story than what was given.

One of the worst written episodes of Castle yet.l Best one sentence review.
"The Vanishing" is one of the worse contrivances I've seen for a TV show and I hope this is the end of it. Don't care to know more details, don't flesh it out, don't ever mention it again. Note to future writers and showrunners: never, ever, ever, ever use amnesia as a plot device. For those currently employed, immediately fire anybody in the room who even dares whisper it.
7x20 is very much like 7x06, "Time of Our Lives" (aka The Blue Screen Wedding). We get Caskett moments, family time, and all the warm fuzzies we expect but waiting at the end is a rushed job to cross an item off the Castle To Do chores list. Wedding? Check. The Vanishing? Done, check. Why? Because of everything we've been through together. 6 years! 6 years we were waiting right here for that perfect Castle wedding. 6 years waiting for them to open their eyes to see that we're still right here begrudgingly waiting for them to stop with all of the stupid delayings tactics.
But, what we got was 6x23, 7x01, and 7x02 and the promise of a new, mysterious arc, and 3 million viewers fell off the side of the building never to be seen again. By the time the reality sunk in at ABC, episodes were already aired, completed, in production, or in post production and a rush was placed on sticking a wedding in somewhere to appease the fans while the explanation and justification got booted to near the end of the season/series.
"Sleeper" isn't an episode. It's the after party cleanup that nobody wanted to do because of the botched practical joke that didn't go so well. So, in a way I LOVED this "episode" because it's done, finished, dead.
I can go wash my hands now.

As a Castle DVD collection owner, I'm sure you've seen all the bloopers and you know full well that Stana would never say, "What the HECK?!" Her metaphors are a bit more colorful, lol!!!

When ABC showed the Castle was getting 12 million viewers last year that included L +7 data. On the very real chance that the 3 million number was hyperbole, please accept my literal apology for this post.
First, java thanks. I lauged out loud. As the ratings person on the site, I did want to point out that Castle is down less then 1 million viewers from mid season high epiodes last year. Generally, the first episode and the last episode of the year see higher ratings and viewers. But, even from those numbers it is about 2 million. The other thing is all of network tv is facing these problems. Not just Castle.

And, it's interesting how so many have not posted to this thread that usually do. Proof that if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it.
Since 6 x 23.... I still keep asking myself. "What were they thinking...?"
I need to let it go.
I hope Stana signs, and we can move forward. I want my old Castle back. Not sorry.
I agree with you that they crammed a three season ARC into one episode. This is one that I don't need to see again. I feel bad for the cast and crew because they couldn't have been proud of the way this one turned out. It was so NOT Castle.
3/4th of season 7 is a reaction to fan reactions to The Vanishing. If this show goes down in flames, will they blame it on the Moonlighting Curse or will this be a new Vanishing Curse? I'm being rhetorical.
