This was a well-written, well-performed episode. I was drawn in from the very beginning. Was guessing along with the crew throughout the episode. I didn't really think Frank was the shooter but it did become obvious that he was involved somehow. I really felt for Ryan, having to arrest his brother-in-law.
Loved Ryan calling Castle in the middle of the night to help him analyze the shooter's position and the bullets' trajectory. Absolutely loved that line, "when you have a crazy theory in the middle of the night you don't call the voice of reason". So perfect, and totally reflects their relationship. And loved Kate backing Ryan up with the captain when they showed her that Chambers couldn't be the shooter.
Thinking that brief discussion about politicians at the end of the episode might be just another hint toward a possible future Senator Beckett. Interesting that the guy from the national party knew of Kate and her reputation; possibly because of her takedown of Bracken? And possibly a future political ally?
Another great episode in a season of great episodes.
Ryan certainly proved himself to be a dedicated employee, both for the security firm and the NYPD. I can see why his brother-in-law said he'd hire him in an instant. Ryan's dogged pursuit of the killer led to him breaking the case wide open with his theory about where the shooter stood and the fact that he rousted Castle out of bed over it, nicely showed just how in sync those 2 are with each other. I loved his line to Kate - "When you have a crazy theory, you don't call the voice of reason." Ryan was also responsible for getting the first suspect to talk. It was a fun moment when Castle got so pumped that he might FINALLY be right with a conspiracy theory. Unfortunately for him, he'll have to wait for another case.
Lots of twists at the end again, my favorite being the involvement of the brother-in-law. It was nice to see Ryan's sister and get a glimpse into Ryan's former family life. There was a nice balance at the end when the sister chose to support her husband even though they were both aware that it wouldn't be easy.
I'll be honest, these continued plot points about Kate thinking in terms of a new job, like the captain position she's studying for, are making me a bit nervous because that kind of move would seem to signal the end of the series. There ARE enough episodes left to have that become a reality. I have trouble seeing how the show could continue with her in a captain's role. Then there was also the comment about needing more honest people in politics. Senator Beckett anyone??? Then again, it could all be a setup for a finale that has Kate being offered a captain's position and we're left all summer wondering about what she'll do but knowing that the series will see a season 8. GAH!!!!! I hate worrying like this! ABC! I WANT TO KNOW NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry - rant over - I have to get my undies out of a bundle and just enjoy the rest of this season. So, on that note, I enjoyed tonight and think Seamus in one heck of a good actor. There was enough Caskett involvement to get me through but I look forward to a return to normal next week.
ABC, Nathan and Stana are quietly running the biggest con game ever on tv. Their agents have the series in their hands. They either have contracts in place or they are so far apart that there is no turning back, barring some extra inning magic. I have seen this before, and somewhere, someone knows what is going on. But we will never know what is in place until it happens. So, for now, the story lines all have a central theme...the future. So we wait. This I know, you can't go into summer break without assurances for the future. I hope everyone is happy. Once again, the twist is in place. And we are the ones who suffer. So I am going to enjoy the rest of this season and hope for the best. Last night was a good example of how good the future can be on this show. Amann has turned the ship around. Lets hope it's not too late.
Amann has said they are going to explore more Beckett mythology at the end of the season. What about Castle's 2 month amnesia? We will see.
I'm not insinuating that Castle had to give her permission or anything like that. I just think it should have been a decision that she shared with him before doing it. For me, it brought back nasty memories of the many times that 2 of them DIDN'T communicate well and the end result was hurt. Granted, Castle seemed to be OK with the reveal but I guess I think it would have been healthier for the relationship to have discussed it together.

Her not talking to Castle first didn't bother me, she'd obviously tell him when the test deadline was coming; for now she's just studying and it isn't as if she was trying to hide it - the book was on her desk. What did bother me is "Captain's Test" - not without her being a Lieutenant first. Really it goes Sargent, then Lieutenant, then Captain, though I think in some cases senior detectives (Detective 1st grade) might be able to go straight to the Lieutenant's test. That was what they did with Nickie Heat, the promotion she turned down, though in the last book she was offered the Captain's spot, skipping Lieutenant.
Actually Ryan's the one who should be taking the Sargent's exam. He's detail oriented and would do well in a supervisory job. Plus working his was up through the ranks would mean higher salary and less need to moonlight.

Great case, but meh, not a fan of the "open marriage" idea. Just my personal opinion. That bothered me. Yeah, I know, shouldn't be a big deal in the overall big picture, but I was sure the wife was behind it. Politics annoys me anyway these days, and I did feel that Kate was right. Getting good people in there is needed. But the nature of the beast always ends up compromising the best of them. Which is why I have reservations with Kate becoming a Senator. But, it's not my call. I feel she still is much more suited to going down the attorney route, and then on to chief justice, as was her regular plan.
The notion of them trying to tie up loose ends, in case this season is it, is pretty obvious to me. This episode, case in point. BUT, I liked the episode. I don't know that any other episode can provide the opportunity to "out-act" Seamus and Jon from their performances on "Under Fire". That was some serious acting going on there. And the dramatically driven episodes seem to bring out the big guns in all of them.
Anyway, the line about not calling the voice of reason in the middle of the night was hilarious, as Motown mentioned. Was nice to see Castle & Kate somewhat at ease with married life in last night's episode, although, I am a fan of their drama and the contention they bring when the situation warrants it.
Kman, thanks again for stating what a lot of us are thinking. Somebody HAS to make a decision and soon. Nathan, Stana, or ABC has to flinch. Personally, I have loved this show beyond all reason but I am beginning to feel cheated. The wonderfully loyal fan base does not deserve this. Whether we get an 8th season or the show ends, for heavens sake, just tell us. As this continues to drag on, I am loosing all respect for all parties involved but this is JMO and I apologize if I offend any of you.
I know I'm splitting hairs. Sometimes studying a material puts you in the right frame of mind while doing your current job and helps you decide if you really want to take the trouble going the other route. For Kate, it means learning the political aspect and probably budget.
