As usual, your review was pretty spot on. I had mixed feelings about this episode. I do agree that the show isn't Castle unless Beckett is also there. At least there should've been a phone call, or something between him and Kate. I kind of lost interest in the murder and wanted to only focus on Castle trying to figure out his lost time. As you said, there are still some holes in his disappearance. Wonder also how the time in Canada fits in! This episode also validates why we need to see more Lanie! Loved her and her scenes with the boys. Hayley also saying she stuck around because she's fond of Alexis and Rick kind of made me feel uncomfortable. Seems like they're trying to see how a show without Kate would be like, just in case Ms. Katic doesn't come back. It would definitely not be the same and probably not a show I would continue watching. I did like Castle's line about working with the best detective in the world and he can't wait to get back to her. Now, is Castle going to tell Kate about this latest development?

Kudos to you for writing a balanced review...I know in your heart you must find it difficult to do with how this season is progressing.

Your thoughts echo my own, Christine. Everything is just too inconsistent with too many moving parts.
Yes, Kate needed to be in LA, separation or not, and it was a bad call to arrange this episode around Stana's absence. Personally, I think it's a bad call to have your lead missing from two of the first 14 episodes, and I find it hard to believe there wasn't a way around that.
The GDS was contrived and way under-developed. A bit more context and exposition would have been nice. On any other topic, Castle would have given us a 10-minute monologue of exposition on the organization, but here, we got a 5-second generic statement of this supposed legendary club of detectives. It's just a little too "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen meets The Illuminati" for my liking. And it really took way too much time away from what deserved to be the central purpose of the episode: Castle's missing time. That got, what?, 5 collective minutes of the episode?
Even Summer Glau's character seemed forced and a waste of some serious potential. Nothing felt natural or organic in the whole episode, and I think for me, that's the bottom line. It was plastic.
So now we move onward, and hope for better.

Again, you bring up the better moments of the episode, while continuing to point out the continuing issues. Absolutely, "I know who the killer is" just does not work if it's not both of them saying it together. Looks like they are not abandoning that whole ridiculous story from "Sleeper" but are trying to expand on it. Large plot holes there.
