Castle didn't get his way about getting married in space but tonight might just be the closest he'll come. Talk about a kid in a candy store! Let's share the fun afterwards right back here.
This was a fun episode. Interesting case, lots of Caskett fun, and some unexpected events in the Castle loft.
And the title art was really cool!
It's nice to hear that Martha is finally able to take care of herself. What a difference 7 years make. Castle was initially not too enthusiastic about Martha living with him, but seems like he is genuinely going to miss having her around. And Kate also seemed sad to hear her decision.
Really wondering with all these pregnancy seeds they've been planting if they are really going to go down that road.
That was a fun romp and I especially enjoyed the quips and one liners, but I do have to start off with a question. Can anyone explain the title to me? I love to see clever titles that tie into the episodes and this one has me searching for any possible meaning! What am I missing?
I can't wait to hear what Alfred Sole has to say about the sets for this episode. He did some really cool stuff and it would be fun to hear how some of it was constructed. I got a real kick out of Castle being so determined that there was less gravity as he jumped along at the beginning. The production team did a nice job with those space suits so that we could still see the actors' faces in them. I also got a kick out of the special title card.
There were so many great lines, from, "We have a murder to solve, not commit," to "We were fighting," to "Yes, Dear," and so many more. I love the playful dialogue!
My favorite homage was to 2001. I loved that movie and I thought the interrogation of M.I.R.A. was wonderful! Great music too. I also have to say that Nathan does a pretty fair Shatner!
Loved that Castle was the first to discover how the murder was committed and that he also thought up the idea of the black box, even though there wasn't one. As usual, I didn't even try to figure out who the murderer was. I just enjoyed the ride to the reveal.
So the issue now is overcrowding at the loft. I can totally agree and want Caskett to have their privacy and room for a family, BUT, I REALLY don't want to see less of Martha! I think it makes a lot more sense for Alexis to be the one moving back into student housing and not having her friends over to her dad's house. I like the way they put a positive spin on Martha looking for a place of her own but she's been such a good sounding board and mentor to both Castle and Kate that I hate to see that end. There was no doubt that Castle and Kate were both totally surprised by the announcement and there was definitely some regret on Castle's part. He's come to love having his mom there. That scene with Nathan and Stana and Susan was my favorite. All 3 of them nailed the emotion in their face and their voices.
I'm looking forward to watching this one again!
The title 'The Wrong Stuff' references famous movie 'The Right Stuff' about the early US space program and the pioneer astronauts some of whom paid the ultimate price for reaching for the stars.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Right_Stuff_(film)
Of course Castle gets rejected when he applied so obvious he doesn't have the 'right stuff', ergo he has the 'wrong stuff'. Nor does Beckett. And then there is the frankly criminal Mars crew all of whom seem to lack the right stuff.
From the Mars simulator landscape/screwdriver, murder weapon title card, I was captured by and “into” 7x16 THE WRONG STUFF!!! How much fun and what creative work the entire CASTLE cast, crew, team, writer, Terri Edda MILLER and director Paul HOLAHAN must have experienced and contributed!!! Sets, lighting, props, wardrobe (Space suits!!!) and music so added to this romp with its loft life and crime-solving challenges!!!
I enjoyed ESPO’S “Mars takedown” and RYAN’S earth-bound happiness, his in-law frustrations, and his greeting the CASTLES!!! I particularly relished Stana’s/Kate’s and Nathan’s/Rick’s banter and CASKETT scenes featuring Kate’s proud happiness that Alexis crushed David (David?! And in Rick’s gear!!!??) at laser tag; Rick’ displeasure, when pajama-clad Martha and Ben descend the loft stairs with Ben wearing Rick’s nightwear; and Kate proclamation that she and Castle have a murder to solve, not commit!!! CASKETT, indeed—while fighting in the past, Rick and Kate each applied to Mars missions!!!
From her boost request, and his, “Why am I always on the bottom?” query to his, “Yes, dear” and CASKETT’S pregnancy concerns through their longing for a together, hot shower rather than an interrupted, hallway kiss—CASKETT would get a room if there were any available—family meeting!!!—and the space mission of CASTLE and BECKETT, Rick’s “best case ever” and Kate’s “interrogating a computer,” I found the crime mystery clever and the family meeting between Kate, Rick, and Martha sweet—and from Martha, whose specialty is the unexpected—unexpected!!! Martha, doing well now, spending time with Ben, and anticipating that little CASTLES will soon “create havoc” in the loft, which she feels CASKETT should enjoy on their own, will find a place of her own—this task will, however, take some time!!! Returning to a loft, at last, all their own, CASKETT opt for dinner at a new, noisy, nearby Indian restaurant!!!
Thanks, kiwiocd! I've never seen or heard of that movie so that would explain my lack of connection. I'm sure you're right. The writers love to pay homage to older films.
The movie "the Right Stuff" was based on a book of the same title about the early space program. I believe it was an actual phrase used to describe those pilots who would make good test pilots (most, maybe all, of the Mercury 7 were) and later astronauts.
Nice chance for both Castle & Beckett to let their inner geek show. Chuckled at the "we were fighting" that both of them cited as the reason for applying to the different Mars programs.
I was wondering when issues of 4 adults in one apartment would come up. Granted, Castle's loft is bigger than many in NYC, but it isn't exactly the Hamptons house. Maybe the unit next to or below them will come on the market and they'll buy it and expand into the 2 spaces. Or they respond to a murder at a brownstone and later buy it (they wouldn't be squeamish about living in a house where someone was murdered).

"The Right Stuff" was a book written in 1979 by Tom Wolfe before it was made into a movie by the same name. Being a space geek I have actually read this book and got it signed by one of the original 7 astronauts Scott Carpenter.
The story line wasn't as impressive as I'd hoped for but the quips and quotes helped quite a bit. Baby talk continues. Martha leaving. Why is Alexis in the loft so much? Doesn't she have her own place? Not the ending I expected. Hard to follow the 3xk arc though.
I feel that we Castle viewers have been spoiled this season with alternate/different openings but I for one am not complaining.
Loved the intro for this episode.
Loved the episode. So much more lighthearted from Resurrection and Reckoning but I loved those episodes too.
Gotta admit that when the opening started with laser tag I thought at first it might have been a game between either Rick/Kate or Rick/Alexis. Looks like I was wrong on both guesses.
Not sure if anyone else caught it ... but the competition to Mr Jennings (Ian Something) ... on his poster were the words "Space Cowboy" (Mild Firefly reference?)
All in all, I think I liked the episode a lot.
arky, when Alexis broke up with Pi, she ended up stuck with the lease on their apartment and was working extra hours to make the rent. Knowing how much Castle wanted her out of there (he never did like that apartment) Kate convinced Alexis that it was OK to come back home. Alexis has been living at the loft ever since.
Favorite scene: Castle "running" in low gravity and Beckett walking up to him and asking, "You done, yet?" Lots of fun dialogues and quite the reprieve from seeing Kate standing over a body holding a bloody scalpel. Didn't care for the COTW and especially its conclusion of collusion at the end.
Looking forward to Martha moving out. LOVE Martha and I don't think we'll be seeing less of her but hoping to see her in a different set besides being trapped at the loft. LOVE the set department. Besides, there's only 5-6 episodes left for season 7 and the "Castles" will be needing to pick up baby from grandmother's house in season 8 and maybe 9. Just a continuation of the storyline.
Speaking of which, Alexis needs to move out, too. A single woman living in NY? Just makes more sense if she's going to throw parties and have a good time exploring life. I know she's in school but that's not really an excuse to keep her at the loft other than making it easier to write the episodes and not have to figure out how to get everybody into the same scene once Martha moves out but I digress.
After re-watching this episode and listening to it I have a few thoughts.
I think Terri must be a space geek also. They used Keir Dullea in the Pilot episode. (For those who don't know he was one of the astronauts in 2001, A Space Odyssey) She tweeted that they had him say his famous line ""Open the door HAL". I loved that the murderer was M.I.R.A. only this time it was not because of AI but due to the 3 crew members reprogramming her to believe that killing Richwood was the only way to protect the mission. It was fun to see Beckett and Castle work together to break down MIRA and figure out that she had been compromised.
I loved the use of Strauss Sprach Zarathustra from 2001 A Space Odyssey. That was not something written for that movie. It is so old that it is public domain so Rob Duncan could snag that to use in this episode. It really set the tone for the homage to 2001 throughout the episode.
I was reading Terri's tweets during the West coast feed as I had already seen the episode. Her sister-in-law actually applied to go to Mars but didn't make the cut. This was one of her inspirations for writing this episode. I asked her if she would be writing anymore episodes this season and she answered "probably".
Once again we saw how amazing the set designers are for Castle. The built that set in 7 days. To think of a TV show getting that put together so fast and on a shoe string budget is mind boggling. Someone tweeted that they will probably have some of that red dirt around the set forever. I was able to see them building the Orion spaceship in Houston. The interiors of the mock up spaceship that they built looked very realistic. The openings between pods even had the signs that could be read as you float in space on all 4 sides of the openings. All of these space pods are usually white as they painted them. All of the buttons and nobs looked very realistic. The mission control room area they must have collected every monitor they could to make it look that good.
Stana and Jon had the most fun in the spacesuits. I remember reading a tweet from Nathan stating that the best thing about wearing the spacesuits was taking if off LOL.
Ok done rambling on with my random thoughts. Just loved this episode as it combined my 2 favorite things Castle and space. Oh and in case you didn't realize it my screen name of "Tycho" comes from Tycho Brahe known for his accurate and comprehensive astronomical and planetary observations. My nod to Space.
After the heavy episodes of the last 2 weeks, this was just great fun. Caskett, dialogue, and the whole thing were just pure fun. I just have one different comment. I would rather of seen Alexis move than Martha. What's a college sophomore(I think) doing living with her Dad especially since they more than have the means for her to live elsewhere. That bugs me a little, okay a lot.
Thanks, kiwiocd! I've never seen or heard of that movie so that would explain my lack of connection. I'm sure you're right. The writers love to pay homage to older films.
Thanks to all of you for the background on the title. While I'm not by any means a space geek, I enjoyed 2001 and the original Star Trek series. I'll check out the movie this is named after and I'll be sure to keep an eye out for a young Jim Beckett!

I need to go back and see this movie again. I just finished the book "Neil Armstrong" written by Jay Barbree, his friend and reporter on his life. Interesting book about one of the most quiet astronauts.
