Hold onto your chairs and your hats and anything you can get a hold of! We are surely in for the ride of our lives tonight. Once you regain your power of speech, please come back and try to put together a few coherent sentences about your reaction.
Also we're trying to pull together a last minute viewing party. For anyone who is interested, come check it out.
No words. Wow.
Wow......just wow. OMG, that has to be one of the best of the entire series. Nathan was at the top of his game tonight. I was on the edge of my seat through the entire episode. I think I stopped breathing when Castle was sparring with Tyson at the end there. I really didn't know what was going to happen...if they were finally going to get him or if he would find a way to slither away again. And how he was going to save Kate...because of course we knew that Castle would save her.
Loved that Espo and Ryan went rogue with him at the end there, after trying to play by the rules through the initial investigation.
And loved that hug with Gates, and she hugged him back! And seemed genuinely glad to welcome him back.
Awesome, awesome episode.
RG, you nailed it! I'm still recovering and it'll be a few more minutes before I can form a coherent thought!
If they don't make it to season 8, I can say this was the crowning achievement in the Action Genre for Marlowe. Not a wasted second. My only complaint was that I wanted more of Stana and Nieman. But just wonderful. I am not so sure they can top this. I loved that Jerry was smuggly told to go to hell by Castle and then Espo sent him there. We can only imagine what Kate did to Kelly, but maybe that imagination was left for us to fill in our own blanks. Brilliant.
Need to watch this again. And oh yes....Gates...and Gates.....loving Penny and the way they are now writing her character. And for the other Gates....revenge is sweet!
To all, a job well done.
Wow, Wow and WOW!!!!!!!!!! That was an incredibly exciting and satisfying conclusion. It took a while for me to come down from the adrenaline rush. My comments tonight are reactions from my first viewing. This is definitely one that I want to watch several times to really appreciate all of the subtle factors that were used to build such a great presentation. After having met Rob Bowman and heard him discuss how intensely he approaches directing an episode, I have no doubt that I'll find countless little gems that he came up with, along with the other amazing production team members, when I watch it again .... and again ... and again ....
I liked the way the episode started by getting right into the frantic pace. Ryan did a good job of containing Castle - at least to start with. Seamus Dever really killed it in the later scene where he apologizes to Castle for letting Tyson get away at the motel. He made it painfully obvious that he's suffered a good deal of trauma because of that night. Espo didn't really stand out as much in this episode but it was VERY fitting that he got the kill shot. That fit his character as much as Ryan's apology fit his. Tori was used well in the episode also. The actress did a nice job of interjecting emotion into her normally calm and factual deliveries.
Then there's Gates. I absolutely loved the way they wrote her part. She was steadfastly focused on saving Kate and still believed that they had to follow proper process BUT, she finally admitted to recognizing the value of Castle's search for the story and she also knew he needed to be a free man so she made sure he could do that. She showed compassion and strength and that hug at the end was awesome! It was apparent that she was feeling the joy too. Now it will be interesting to see if we get any different vibe from her when she next interacts with Castle.
This was one excellently written chase! I expected twists and turns and people looking like someone else but there were a couple of twists that took me totally by surprise. When Castle went to the prison to see Marcus Gates, I was completely surprised. I read a lot of spoilers but I don't ever remember a mention of that actor appearing in this episode. The BEST twist of all was the reveal that Ryan and Espo had been in on everything from that moment in the precinct when Castle said they'd never get Tyson that way. Revealing it as flashback that showed the guys in on all of the planning was AWESOME! I actually cheered! What a team! I also liked that Kate was never made to look like a helpless victim. She had her kickass moment even though we only saw the aftermath of it. I was very thankful that both Tyson and Nieman were killed and that Castle and Beckett got to witness it so there was no shadow left to haunt them in any way. One other thing I appreciated was seeing Tyson at the house with the gash over his eye so we knew beyond the shadow of a doubt that Castle was right and it was him all along.
Loved the return to the precinct with applause and emotional hugs. It was nice that Lanie was there, especially since she started the ball rolling with her hunch. It was a great way to get Castle back into the precinct as a consultant and I think Gates is honestly glad to have him.
I can't say enough positive stuff about that ending scene in the bedroom. It was so right for Kate to be lost in her thoughts after such a scary and emotional few days. She needed to look a bit haunted at that point. Loved that Castle had such tender things to say to her, including the first "Always," since the wedding vows. Those 2 can say so very much with just their facial expressions and I'm thankful that the camera lingered on them for a few seconds after the kissing.
Lastly, kudos to my man, Nathan! This, like Target and Hunt, was his chance to rock the dramatic material and he did it in spades. The anguish in his voice and face when he thought Kate had died in front of him was crushing. The desperation and hatred in his attack on Tyson was coming from the deepest part of him.
Congrats to the entire Castle team for an exciting and highly memorable 2 parter this season!
Wow!!! What an awesome and superlative episode in every way!!! Thank you to AWM, Rob BOWMAN, Nathan, Stana--and all cast, crew, and team!!! We CASTLE fans are so very fortunate!!! Thank you, too, to all tweeters, teasers, live tweeters!!! To my surprise, I am awaiting a kidney stone's passing?!--thank goodness for adult children, grandchildren, medical professionals, and pain meds!!! 7x15 RECKONING--amazing!!!
One word, intense. One of my new favorite dramatic episodes of the series.
I stayed up to watch again with the Westies. Once again Rob Bowman gave us a feature film in 42 minutes plus the recap of the 4 previous 3XK stories. How does he do that? Why doesn't he have an Emmy or Two yet?
I knew right away that the frantic phone call from Beckett was fake. She would never act like that or say those things. She would have told them where she was or given them a clue.
When Castle appeared to be going alone to get Kate. I actually stopped the DVR and said to my hubby. Really??? After all that he has been through with Ryan and Espo and he didn't bring them along!! How stupid was that. Rant over...started the show again only to discover that he did indeed team up with the boys!! Don't mess with the team from the 12th they will always track down the killer.
I loved the chat with the Captain when she told Castle what Beckett had told her about how He could figure out the story that brought all of the evidence together. She was able to get Castle back on track to solve the most important story of his life.
I really should have waited 20 minutes before we started to watch as the commercial stops were killing me. They seriously have way too many commercials. But then I guess that is a good thing so they can pay for our show.
I watched Jimmy Kimmel while I was waiting for the west coast feed. I was right Stana was on to promote her ATP auction on E Bay this week. She has up the shirt she has told the story about that Nathan cut for her audition. Also the ticket to the Duran Duran concert that her and Nathan went to in NYC when they were filming the pilot signed by both of them. I'm sure both items will bring in lots of money for ferry charity.
Time to get some sleep.
What an ep! You've all recapped it so well.
Kudos to all on the show. Nathan was superb, and Nathan and Stana can both say so much with just a look. The ending had me in tears, imagining the trauma they each felt, Stana's haunted look, the tenderness between the two of them just right.
The second time around I paid more attention to the soundtrack....WOW! It adds so much to the tension, suspense and emotion throughout the ep.
MY GOODNESS, what a great 2 parter!!!! Great story, great acting, wonderful suspense, and a fitting end for 3XK and Neimann. The responses here have been AWESOME and I would just be redundant to say more except we LOVED it.
Great episode !!! A fitting end to a most interesting arc. Michael Mosley and Annie Wersching just nailed their parts to a T.
Nathan Fillion showed that he can deliver like the pro he is when given a chance.
Stana likewise was excellent.
Jon Huertas tweeted Michael Mosley early this morning "Now,Mike,I'll c ya on Sirens_meaning I needs a job."
Wonder what that means?

I think part of moving the focus back to the Castle character this season was to give Nathan more of a challenge to push his acting chops a bit. HE has said he basically could just show up and do his lines without much prep. I think for this episode he really pushed himself. It is nice to see them shine.
Time to watch again this morning with the closed caption on so I can catch a few more lines. It always amazes me how I can find a few words here and there that are not said on screen but they show up in the closed captioned display.
Didn't catch any new things in the dialog this time. But I did notice again how steady Castle was anytime he was handling the gun. You would think someone without a lot of experience handling a gun would be a bit shaky. This shows how determined he was to get Beckett back but it also makes me think he has a lot more experience with a weapon than we have been lead to believe. I wonder if we will see more of this as the season progresses and we find out more about the missing 2 months?
I'm sad that I'll have to wait until Sunday now to watch the episode with captions on. For some reason my VCR no longer wants to caption my taping.
I was blown away with my first viewing of the episode. And I know that before the day is over I will have watched it at least a few more times.
I love how the 1000 hours of community service shocked Castle until Gates revealed it would be as a consultant for Beckett.
All in all ... I'd have to agree that this is by far one of the best two-parters out there.
LOVE the Tyson-Nieman vs Castle-Beckett dynamic. Where Castle finds the story from the evidence Beckett gathers, Tyson creates the story by manipulating people and Nieman brings him the material for his gruesome work. Where Castle is famous and Beckett is the career woman, we see an infamous serial killer and a career professional. Both couples bring out the best in each other for good and evil.
Although this arc was getting a bit long in the tooth with Tyson's omnipotence and a questionable theft and removal of all evidence (computers, back-up storage, multiple agencies, multiple jurisdiction and locales with evidence, etc), the addition of Nieman elevated Tyson from just another two bit serial killer like Scott Dunn (2x17, 2x18) into someone truly diabolical. Like Castle, he understands people but brings out the worse in them. "There are two kinds of folks who sit around thinking about how to kill people: psychopaths and mystery writers." I'm the mastermind who outwits everybody. Who am I? I'm Jerry Tyson. I really am plain looking and I bet you didn't suspect. Every mastermind needs disciples, and I've found mine. I'm Dr. Kelly Nieman.
Their unquestionable demise was not just satisfactory, but celebratory, and their ending in this two part thriller immortalizes their names in television, and especially Castle lore, forever as two of the most cunning and ruthless villains.
Bravo.

Hand's down, best two-parter of the series! Completely gratified! That the team were the ones to out-wit, out-smart and out-play the psychotic masterminds. They took Tyson & Neiman down together, just as Castle said they would do. As a team, and for always!
Completely gratified that it was Castle, Espo & Ryan that were Kate's heros, and that Espo was the one to make the kill-shot on Tyson. I was clapping and bawling all at the same time, and then tears escalated to sobs when they found Kate. Horrified (yet gratified) that she was the one to take down Kelly. The facial expression acting by Stana... incredible! The eyes had it! Geez!
Bravo indeed!!!! Standing ovation Bravo!!!!
Something else I wanted to say....
Interesting that so many thought there was going to be another Kate. Rightly so. I was going along with it, because it seemed totally in character with what Tyson & Kelly had been doing, but wasn't on board 100%. It makes perfect sense now why there wasn't - Kelly was sooo taken with Kate that she wanted to be her! Sooo incredibly creepy.
I was a blubbering idiot. For so many reasons.
What an ep! You've all recapped it so well.

I second all the great thoughts here! I can't add anything more. I was on the edge of my seat the whole hour. This was Castle at its best - twisty, turny, roller coaster ride, with heart, determination, love, dedication, family, loyalty and more. Wow! Just Wow!
CastleKat, I, too, expected a Beckett clone and in a way, we got her in the person of that poor former addict who got shot to death at the warehouse. It wasn't a complete makeover like I expected but it was the use of a look-alike. That whole scene was crushing too, as the guys had to watch her die and know that they failed in preventing another death. I think they ALL could use sessions with Dr. Burke after this!!!!!!!!!!!
After seeing how obsessed the doc was with Kate's "lovely" face I think she was saving her face for her make over. She didn't want to share that "lovely" face with anyone else.
And yes I think they should get a group rate to all see Dr. Burke after this case for sure!

We all of course remember the now famous line that he was aiming for his head from the Jordan Shaw Chronicles and so forth and so on. (20 agents could have shot at his hand and not hit that gun) As we say in baseball...."da boy got game"
I want him to carry a gun. And now I can say that he can keep his PI status...I love the office. It's a nice retreat for him and Kate.
That weapon thing goes back to season 1 at the shooting range. We saw first hand what a cracker jack shot he is. Of course he wanted to "cuddle" with Kate, but he wanted those pictures more and then 3 bullseyes in a row and of course the compliment on what a great teacher Kate was. Sophia Turner probably had a lot to do with the shooting thing.

I remember all of the gun handling from before. "Home is where the heart stops" is in my top 10 because of that wonderful shooting range scene. I really thought we would see a gun permit and James Bond style holster for P I Castle by now. To not have a gun to back him up since Kate was not there to back him up seemed weak. He obviously has quite a stash of guns in the loft at his disposal. Yes, it's time for castle to have his own gun.
I wonder if Kate knows that he has so many guns?
Incredible non-verbal acting! They never cease to blow me away with their talents!
The ending...ditto. Just wow.
And Wow to the next level on that ending.

Hey CK....I always believed that the two of them could do an episode without speaking a word and we would understand what was going on. Stana said the other night on Kimmel that she would love to do a scene where Beckett is interrogating a mime. Would love to have an episode where Rick had laryngitis and couldn't speak but still solved the case working with Beckett. Just a thought.
And Wow to the next level on that ending.
Rick having laryngitis...waahahahahahahaha! The other three on the team would have a field day with that! Baseball reference just for you!
I still think you're famous, Kman. And that you're holding out on us!
I just assumed the gun Castle took form the loft was Kate's backup. I guess he could have gotten one "under the counter" for this rescue. I don't see him risking getting caught with an unlicensed gun otherwise; that would really nix him working at the 12th. And he did comment in one episode a while ago that he couldn't get a permit.
I'd noticed Rick driving a Buick since the PI arc began. Just figured it made more sense, being less conspicuous. Hadn't thought of it as product placement until this episode. But at least it wasn't ham handed the way those things often are (Bones has been particularly bad IMO about working dialogue about their Toyotas into episodes). Castle was in a rural area with no free Wi-Fi, needed to use his iPad and the GM in car Wi-Fi came in handy. Of course Castle would go for all the bells & whistles on any car. And the big trunk comment was good.
I imagine after this ordeal Kate will have a recurrence of her PTSD. Doubt it will be mentioned, but she probably needs a few sessions with "Dr. Worf".
Hello all!
Its been over a year since I've visited here, but after seeing the 2 part-er, it was like watching the old Castle episodes again! These were two brilliantly written episodes, and though I agree 3XK was a bit dragged out, I loved how it ended. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time and I loved that this latest episode had a twist that caught me off guard. I thought that Castle was just telling Jerry that he was one step ahead to mess with him, but that wasn't the case at all Nathan did some great acting in this episode, especially when he thought Beckett was dead. Bravo to a creative and exciting episode!
Three pages of comments in the Epilogue - it's starting to feel like old times! How great to hear from a lot of people! SHORTIE! It's awesome to hear from you! I'd love to know where you're student teaching if you want to PM me.
I'm absolutely smitten with the idea of an episode with Castle having laryngitis! Nathan uses his hands all the time when he talks or tells stories and it would be such a hoot to see him have to rely on just his hands and face.
Kman, you're positively cracking me up with your comments - Does Kate know Castle has so many guns? I have no doubt that she's handled all of them!!!!!!!!! Your "Bam said the lady" comment was perfect too. For me it was a fist pump and a resounding "YES!" when Castle told Espo to take the shot. Thoroughly satisfying and I felt every emotion right along with the characters.
