Sounds like our newly minted PI gets in over his head this time around. Trouble is his middle name! Let's talk about how he handles it and how Kate fits into the mystery. Please contribute your thoughts after you've seen the episode.
Nicely done! I think that was a great way to cap off the PI arc. The case was very interesting and Castle and Beckett and the team were all involved, thanks to Gates being conveniently out of the precinct. It was distinctly different than the first 2 episodes in the arc.
I liked the way Castle got into the case, having the woman be a former high school classmate. Castle readily admitted that he didn't care to take that kind of a case but gave in when she pleaded. He's a softie and we know it so it fit the character. I also liked that they didn't have her flirt with Castle in any way. There were so many twists and Hitchcock references that my head was spinning but I have to say that every one of them did make sense to me. Nothing felt overly contrived. It was nice that Espo wasn't snarky towards Castle and Lanie was very sympathetic to him, treating him like a true friend. There was plenty of Kate / Castle screen time during the case so I was satisfied on that front too.
The B story was OK. I get that Ryan and Jenny want to see Espo dating again and include him in their couple activities, but I did think that setting up a profile on Match.com was a bit overstepping the personal boundaries. Nevertheless, it was a fun scene when Ryan first revealed their efforts and Kate even sided with Ryan in encouraging Espo to try the blind date. Wonder if we'll ever hear how things went with Trixie??
In terms of Caskett, I loved the very domestic opening with Kate choosing to work at home with hubby and then both of them lighting up over the possibility of a 'nap'! When Castle got the call to the office, I appreciated that he considered not going because he wanted to spend the day at home with Kate. She was being very fair in pointing out that she takes off any time there's a homicide and is wholly supportive with her comment, "Knock 'em dead, Babe." At the end, Kate again shows her support of his PI endeavors as she encourages him to sleep on it before deciding to quit the job. It reminds me of the way Castle supported her when she tried the DC job. How could I NOT love the ending?? Making out at the office with her in his lap - more please!
Two other random comments - it's interesting that when Castle wakes her during the night, he calls her Beckett and who knew - Castle appears to drive a Buick! Guess the Ferrari is a bit much for PI work!
The show seemed a little out of synch again, but there is an underlying reason for it.
It's tough not having the whole team together and now we see Rick is doubting himself, or maybe growing up a little, realizing that maybe without Kate, and even Ryan and Espo, it's just not worth it. Maybe he feels he should just accept the fact that they may officially never work again together. It almost feels like he was battling himself as the case progressed. He knew what happened, ie, the murder, and he figured out that this was a scam by the scorned partner and wife, and also figured out he was the "Patsy", before it all went wrong. Funny how Kate now reassures him much in the same way he way he used to for her. I kept waiting for the word "Extraordinary" from Kate's lips. I even think that she is feeling his frustration, understanding that she went through similar feelings in her early years as detective. He will need to mature and remember that experience will temper the storm. It will steady him, make him more in tune with the job he is doing. I believe that is the main theme of this episode. There is this hopeful uneasiness as Castle learns to walk and work becomes play again, which translates into personal triumph and fun.
He struggles with the gratification that comes from a job well done. He now fully understands what it is like to walk in their shoes. and how good they are at what they do. They now respect him and the warm understanding tone and facial expression by Lanie summed it all up. They miss him, and now they are pulling for him, if not to make it back, at least to succeed in his efforts. One thing to note is that he had the courage to go this alone....it says a lot....and it will mean so much more later.
We don't know if this show is a defining moment for him as a PI, but we do know that maybe it has hardened him just a little for what lies ahead in the next two episodes. They are showing us a side to Castle that we have not seen. He wants to succeed. He is trying so hard. But, he is a rookie, he is "Fresh Meat" and that leads to rookie mistakes, but he has the hunger and he is willing to work and has the love of a beautiful woman, so he knows that no matter what, he wins. But there is this very cautious, apprehensive feeling, like"Oh God, What have I Gotten Myself Into!". I get the feeling he needs more, so much more. I know, it sounds weird, but feels he should be with Kate solving cases, so he has gotten himself into something a little uncomfortable for him, which, in the end, will make him strong and awesome and worthy of being being Kate's partner in every way. With every case, he finds another piece. Hopefully, being a PI will open new inroads as to breaking down his own walls. He only wanted certain cases, but now, he gets to pay his dues. It not only makes him a more better writer, it makes him a better man. There is a lot going on in this episode. And everyone is respectfully rallying around their friend, and more importantly, their colleague.
I love his gadgets. How cool is it to point the microphone and listen to conversations over lunch. A stockbroker would have a field day in insider trading with those toys. If Rick got the right people, they could have a real kick ass agency.
The only other thing is now, it seems they spend more time at Rick's office....why didn't they just go home and take a "Nap"? If nothing else, this office is an oasis, a place to take a break, sip some 100 year old scotch and relax. We are getting may good moments in there.
The episode reminded me a little of the 100th episode, and it got better, but in the end, the lawyer broke the law...So did the lawyer leave us with foreshadowing for next week with her final words?
So what else is new?

You are much more in tune with their development as a couple N...I am seeing Castle struggling a bit, but he wants to be with Kate and that makes it alright. And you are right about her 100% support...she and the gang went out of their way to solve this case. It is very important to understand how much more they respect and love him. He is paying his dues.
Kman, I really enjoyed your insight into Castle's maturation in this episode. I think it really hit him hard that he'd been a patsy and was quick to lose confidence in his own abilities. It meant so much that Kate stepped up and supported him in every way.
The other point you made that was outstanding was the idea that Castle has now had to walk in Kate's shoes so to speak. He's encountering some of the same feelings and frustrations that she, as a detective, has had in her career. I totally agree with you, that they are well on their way to becoming one heck of a powerful crime solving team!
Really liked the episode. I don't see them as out of sync. Very much in sync as a couple, more so then ever. Good to see Rick getting to experience a bit of what Kate deals with regularly. Previously, the deaths were more abstractions. Her support is great. Funny that separating them at the precinct has brought more sexy time to the screen. I think this has been the best run of writing (7x11-7x13) of the whole year. Consistently good. Very excited for the two parter.
Also, her comment the killer's comment that "this isn't over." Are they setting her up as the new ongoing story?
I am not sure the PI thing is going to be over by the end of the two parter, so don't get hopes too high.
I found 7x13 I, WITNESS a plot-twist-filled, crime-solving, thought-provoking delight!!! Rick surely continues to pay and to evaluate his P.I. dues; and Kate and his precinct friends aid and care about him his work!!! This time CASTLE P.I.’s case interrupts Kate’s working on paperwork at home with her husband—after all, GATES is on vacation; and CASKETT can take “naps”!!!
Kate encourages, assists, supports, and consoles “Babe,” for whom she volunteers to later fix dinner and to whom, at his office, she brings coffee, even if, pondering his intricate murder board, Rick might not need more caffeine!!! BECKETT’S forehead kiss, her assertion that Rick has brought justice to two murder victims, and her recommendation that he sleep on any decision to leave behind the P.I. work Rick finds ambiguous underline Kate’s love for her witness/P.I. and lead to office “napping,” which Kate advocates and which CASKETT have been anticipating!!!
Dark woods, rain, flashlight-bearing pursuits, multiple suspects frustrate and endanger Rick, who, this time, did try to phone Kate about his whereabouts and situation!!! Kudos all interior and exterior cinematography, lighting, sets, wardrobe and makeup, music, and editing—and writers Terence Paul WINTER and Amanda JOHNS, director Tom WRIGHT, and all cast, crew, and team!!!
How lovely to have Lanie back, an expert M.E., who also cares about her colleagues and friends!!! Even Kate would like to see ESPO date—RYAN and Jenny have taken that quest a bit farther—establishing and maintaining an online dating profile, which they hope will provide Javier with a companion for their joint, ski weekend!!! ESPO’S Trixie may not be their choice; but she will be joining them on the slopes and at the lodge!!!
So sweet and fun the bedroom callback to 6x04 NUMBER ONE FAN when CASTLE answers Kate that yes, he is asleep!!! Now, BECKETT responds to CASTLE’S, “BECKETT, are you still awake?” with, “No”!!! As to whether or not she believes Rick’ theory, Kate found him right too often to fail to consider it!!! It seems that Kate and we will need CASTLE and team during the two-parter, already, per promo, creepy, intense, and terrifying!!!
I enjoyed this episode. Lots of twists and turns, and I didn't figure out who the killer was until the very end; I thought it was going to end up being one of the husband's partners.
I really felt for Castle; he was trying to do a favor for an old schoolmate, and felt responsible that he couldn't save her, then felt duped when he thought she was still alive. I loved that Kate had his back the whole time, even when it seemed like there was no murder. It was convenient for this story that Gates was out of town, since it was actually out of their jurisdiction.
I too thought it was a bit much for Ryan and Jenny to set up a match.com profile for Espo. Setting him up on a blind date with an acquaintance, okay, but setting him up on a dating site? Going a little too far, I think. And I couldn't help thinking, more than once, if they were looking for another couple to share the ski weekend, hello......Castle and Beckett?? Maybe it was initially with Espo and Lanie, but did it really not occur to them that they have another couple they can do "couple" outings with?
I liked this episode, but do wonder, if they continue the P.I. story after the 2-parter, how much more can they contrive to intersect Castle's and Beckett's cases?
I really enjoyed last night's episode.
I enjoyed this episode more than the last one. I did suspect the lawyer as soon as I saw her. In the first season they had unknown guest stars. Now they get the well known "A" listers for guest stars so when you see a known face they will probably be important.
I loved to see how far they have come with realizing that Castle ,many times, is the person who figures out "the story that makes it all make sense". I loved it when Kate defended Castles thoughts on the possible murderer. The boys realized that she was right about Castle. Even though he didn't guess the right person he did lead them in the right direction to find the real killer.
I think this P I office is here to stay. Even if he doesn't do many real cases it will be a fun place for Caskett to escape to for an occasional "nap". They just need to remember and lock the door...
That kiss at the end........................................... DAYUM! pbpt
Well well now! A good NAP for our DD seems like the new key word. LOL!!!
Gotta love it when they aren't interrupted!
Interesting episode but seemed familure to this long time fan.
I am sooo ready for the continuation of the 3XK arc !!! Two parter may mean they wrap this one up.
I'm connected to this arc simply because of the emotional drama it has caused for Rick and Kate.
This is one of the best story lines in the series and TPTB have really done it justice.
I so agree with you, Castlekat!!
I liked it, and I actually like to PI arch, as they are working to gether, now for next week
