Please take part in the discussion after you've seen the show.
I think I am in the vast minority on this, but I would love if Nathan would tone down the schtick a bit.
This was a comedy classic...nice way to come back to break.
More tomorrow, watching it over now with wife....but the one thing I take is this...for as much "By The Book" as Gates is, and even though she was adamant that Castle stay awsy....there was this one moment...the fantastic four were swapping theory and were seamlessly "killing it" as Gates, very quietly peaked around the corner, crossed her legs, leaned against the wall, took off her glasses and gave everyone a look as though she was enjoying the four bantering. She displayed a look of a proud mother marveling over her kids....that is before she turned back to evil Gates towards Castle....She is going to go to bat for him...you wait and see. The writers and showing her as Iron Gates, but she sees how good he is and how well they work together. The tension between her and Castle has potential for both great comedy and terrific drama.
And one more thing...that ending was priceless.
And before I'm off to bed I have to mention that I absolutely loved Castle's office. It had that whole 1940s, film noir vibe to it and I thought it was just perfect for Castle. As much as I want Rick back at the 12th, I don't want to lose this set any time soon.
Gotta love Kate greeting Martha in the morning with a kiss and Martha calling her, "Babe." This is definitely now HOME and they are FAMILY. I liked the way Alexis was used in this ep also. She was a good sounding board for Castle but didn't need to be a key part of the crime solving.
Ryan or "Baby Castle" as Espo called him, did a great job of playing the "C Card" several times and spouting Castle-like theories. It was fun to see the guys worried that Castle was going to solve this before them, despite Kate being so sure that wasn't possible. Ryan had a great line when he reminded her that Castle had gotten her to marry him!
I got to meet Arye Gross, who plays Perlmutter, when I attended the Castle Con in November and he was just going in for the filming of this episode. I sure wish I could talk to him now! He stole the show with his confrontation of Castle in the morgue. That is going to go down as one of my all time favorite funny scenes. Arye and Nathan nailed the comedic timing in that one. Gates was another supporting actor that shined tonight IMO. She certainly can get worked up when it comes to "Mr. Castle!"
I think Rob Hanning, the writer, did a wonderful job of balancing Kate and Castle competing but also being drawn together. Shoot, we started out with Castle still bringing Kate her coffee so I knew right then that all would be fine! Loved it when Kate showed up at Castle's new office, not knowing he even had one and also when they tried to use wine to loosen each other's tongues. I actually SQUEALED over the call back to The Blue Butterfly - still one of my top 10 episodes! Castle sitting at his desk with the glass of scotch and narrating was awesome! We got a couple of great theory building moments and there can be NO DOUBT that it's a turn-on for both of them! I'm sure they had a wild and passionate night. I loved the way they wrapped the case up, with Kate and the team finding the killer but Kate orchestrating the arrest to occur at Castle's office so that he could be a part of it. Very fitting.
Nice, final scene at the loft, hearing Kate tell Castle that she's proud of him and him asking her if she's OK with him continuing. Good communication as opposed to the initial surprise of him becoming a PI. I also loved that Kate reminded him that she'd much prefer that they be working together and the episode left no doubt that Castle wants that too. I suspect we'll see 2 more PI type episodes and that'll be it. I have to love any ending when it involves them sharing a passionate kiss and heading for the bedroom! Keep the hat on!
I want to mention special kudos to Nathan for the way he so realistically played the whole pepper spray incident. Both his initial reaction and the way he carried it through, even as he was talking to the guy, were so believable.
The day we watched them filming in downtown LA was the day they did the scenes in the alleys, the scene outside the NY Ledger and when Castle was following the guy carrying the dog. They spent at least 8 hours getting those small bits of footage. The beginning part of Castle following the guy with the dog had Castle crossing an intersection first. He filmed it 6 different times and each time Nathan changed his gait as he crossed. It probably took nearly an hour and they never even used a bit of it. That scene started with him already across the street. As they were filming that part, I was sitting right in front of the NY Ledger Office door by an evergreen in a large pot. You can see it in that later scene. It was a real kick to see that tonight. I also want to go back and check that scene very closely because we were across the street as they were filming Castle talking to the reporter and at one point we were asked to move further down the block because we were being seen in the background. It'd be a hoot if one of us showed up along the sidewalk!
This was a top notch episode for me and one that I'll enjoy watching many times over!
I found so much to love in the Rob HANNING written and Milan CHEYOV directed, CASTLE P.I.!!! Rick’s “surprise” for Kate, regarding which her fear, Martha, “Good morning, Babe,” to Kate, credits as smart!!! How proud recently, often pajama-clad Rick is of his online-earned P.I. license!!! How proud Kate is of his resourceful crime solving!!! CASTLE, Jr., RYAN takes up CASTLE’S outlandish theorizing and imitating Rick at the murder board; ESPO can’t help but delight in his and RYAN’S getting to the coffee cup evidence ahead of Rick, even if only just!!!
What a family shares the loft!!! Martha, Alexis, Kate, and Rick are all happily at home there, along with Kate’s big, Alex GROSS painting and, I think, her Buddah [?] statue/head!!! Alexis is happy to bring dinner to her father’s charmingly vintage P.I. office—another surprise for BECKETT—and father and daughter share some crime solving, too!!! Kate regretfully leaves Rick, “I have to go, Baby”!!!
PERLMUTTER cannot abide CASTLE—how can such an astute woman as Kate have married him—with whom, your husband the writer, PERLMUTTER has had to discuss crime details and from whom, PERLMUTTER has tried to shield the corpse at the crime scene?!!
While GATES is caught up watching her fab four crime solvers at work, she cannot permit, “Mr. CASTLE,” to work at the 12th!!! Despite his resourcefulness, recognized by RYAN, “He got you to marry him,” and Kate, so proud of her husband’s crime solving creativity, efforts, and results, CASTLE, obviously longing to work again with his wife and team, asks his Kate what she would think of his continuing to work as CASTLE P.I. for a bit!!!
Wedding ring indicated, Kate has stated that married couples share!!! This wedded couple share longed for crime-solving foreplay, seduction, embraces, kisses, large glasses of red wine, and a night worth recalling!!! We find no lack of lovely, hot CASKETT!!! Rick questions Kate about what has happened to the leather-jacket-wearing, motorcycle-riding rebel, whom Kate now recognizes enforcing the law and drinking expensive wine!!! Of course, RYAN questioned whether or not "they" are behind or ahead of Rick--Kate's reply, "We are definitely on top of him," apparently, per Rob HANNING, an improve line by Stana or Seamus or both!!!
Thank you to writer; director; cinematographer; wardrobe, hair, and makeup artists; set designer; lighting; editing; music—accompanying that delightful, vintage office set and working perfectly with all characters and their roles!!! Love and appreciate Terri Edda’s, the writers’, Luke REICHLE’S live tweeting—and their work and roles in CASTLE P.I.!!! Stana’s/Kate’s and Nathan’s/Rick’s “lightening in a bottle” chemistry, frustrations, devotion, love, and afterglow—wow!!! BECKETT rocks CASTLE’S shirt—CASTLE rocks his SHERLOCK hat and magnifying glass!!! How awesome Stana/Kate’s excited anticipation, as Nathan/Rick opens his gifts—“Keep going; there’s one more”—which Rick will wear to work—but first, to bed!!!
As ever, Penny/GATES, Seamus/RYAN, Jon/ESPO, Susan/Martha, Molly/Alexis, and Arye/PERMUTTER were perfect!!! I always miss Tamala/Lanie when she is absent—but that doesn’t lessen my excited, laugh-out-loud, appreciation for the cast, crew, and team featured in CASTLE P.I.!!! I look forward to learning even more about what you CASTLECon attendees’ thought/think!!! Love that you watched the filming of this episode—I so enjoy what you have and will share about your experience!!!
Which CASTLE episode is the source for the callback, “You’re a detective…detect”?
I was thinking again about Arye Gross and his wonderful Perlmutter performance last night and I remembered something else from Castle Con. He was sporting a full beard on Saturday and he was lamenting that they'd probably make him shave it off for Monday's filming. He said he HATES to shave! Sure enough, Perlmutter was clean shaven last night. Actually, he looked good in the beard I thought.
I thought the call back to The Blue Butterfly was awesome! Things like that are little treasures for those of us who know the episodes so well.
The comedy of Perlmutter and Castle just never gets old. Now, I love me some Lanie, but I have to confess. I find the episodes where Perlmutter is the ME just so spectacular. The sparks fly and it's just brilliant. Lanie is the sweetest, and adore her in her role as ME and Kate's friend, but I do love me some Perlmutter. LoL!
The little quip foreshadowing Kate becoming a mom was sweet. I loved the look on her face when the impact of what Castle said hit her.
I loved the moments when Ryan clearly was missing Castle. He is such a sweet, sentimental man under his cop exterior. I really do love the character of Kevin Ryan. Tough as nails, tender as a lamb.
The wine back at the loft scene -- totally and completely rolling! I mean, serious belly laughing! I found that to be completely hilarious from beginning to end - the actions, dialog, acting... Seriously! They nailed that scene! Well, when don't they? (silly me)
Okay, okay, I'm just rambing. But yeah. Concur on all counts here! Even though I'm not a fan of Rick and Kate working separately, this totally worked for me. Great writing/directing/acting! So much heart!
Kate kissing her cheek "good morning" was so sweet.
Castlekat, I caught that bit about how insane parents can get about their kids, "you'll see", and agree it was a total "awwwww" moment.
Such great Caskett moments and foreplay. Loved the callback to the Blue Butterfly....my mind immediately popped to Joe Flynn when that narration started. Also enjoyed the interplay between Kate and Martha at the beginning.
Also liked how Gates interacted with the team, and that brief moment she let the 4 of them theorize before kicking Castle out. I think maybe she misses him a little bit, not that she'd ever admit to it.
All in all, fantastic episode! Can't wait to see how else they integrate Castle P.I. into the episodes until he comes "home" to the 12th.
It's too bad the morons at ABC ran this opposite the NCAA Championship Game....The whole country and world needed to see this one!!!! Hopefully they will not make the same mistake next year. This clearly is still one of the best shows on tv. It will be a classic rerun. A+ RATING
YOU ARE SO RIGHT.....WE LOVE LANIE, BUT THE PERLMUTTER DYNAMIC IS SIDE SPLITTING. GREAT CHARACTER. That scene reminded me of old Marx Brother movie or something.....maybe even "Thin Manish"
What was great was that they were slightly our of Harmony...just a little out of synch while saying their lines...that was brilliant. They both were parroting each other's words and neither could quite believe what was going on and as they talked, so they hesitated cause it stunned them. It was like, no you go, OKay...wait, we are both saying and thinking the same exact thing..."Is this really happening...." That one second of silence before Kate repeated the line was perfect. It made the scene. These two share something so special, both Castle and Beckett and Nathan and Stana.

Those two can set the room on fire without a match, let me tell ya........whew.
Yes, indeed......................................
Now, if you'll excuse me. I have a social event to plan.
I get it!
Those two can set the room on fire without a match, let me tell ya........whew.
I said it once, I'll say it again....this is the modern day Tracy/Hepburn...the duo is the "Thin Man" revisted...they get to the Hart to Hart of the matter....Such Chemistry...it would make a Mad Scientist blush.
Kate kissing her cheek "good morning" was so sweet.
in fact I think she won!! I love Martha!

And yeah, loved me some Hart to Hart back in the day! I think they were the first couple where I could actually "feel" the fire of their sweet romance coming through my TV screen. I was pretty young back when that was on, too. But boy, those of us who get it, we burn with them!
And you've also reminded me of the pursuit I was on... watching classics! Adding Thin Man series and "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" to that list!
And I can, and do, blush! But I love it! NOT sorry! LoL!
I LOVE Perlmutter! Loved it when Castle first "crashes" the scene and the whole "It's confidential" back and forth, and at one point Perlmutter puts his clipboard down in front of the victim's face ostensibly so Nathan can't see her. I would love to see Perlmutter more often.
Nathan was great with the pepper spray scene....loved his frustrated pouty faces throughout! Nathan's "bedhead" the "morning after" was adorable!
Definitely laughed out loud when Kate poured the full glass of wine and Castle's comment...
I thought the scene with Alexis was well done and very funny.
Yup, they were all great! Second viewing was even more fun! All is good....so far
.
in fact I think she won!! I love Martha!
Hi everyone!
Nathanfan I can't believe that I can actually confirm that it was indeed Vampire Weekend that had Kate telling Ryan and Espo to detect. They found what I believe was Damon who was dressed as the werewolf.
I only know because as I read this thread and CastleFanGran asking, my UK Channel Alibi was showing the episode. Right now they are repeating Castle from S1, E1. They have reached S2, E7. I can only assume that once they reach the end of S6 they will begin S7.
B.x

And I think, every once in a while, Cosi TV runs a Hart to Hart marathon of their movies. There was one a couple of weeks ago. The wife and I watched them. Lots of fun. I know they are on at least one day a week on Cosi. If you love the classic old tv shows the way I do...you will love Cosi TV. It is done in conjunction with NBC affliates. I love Magnum, PI. I think they just added Murder She Wrote, they had Columbo and Kojack and Make room for Daddy and the Dick Van Dyke Show, etc. (Some may be on MeTV, which is affiliated with all the ABC affiliates...but you get the gist of it...these shows are making a comeback, just like Castle will 20 years from now)
And oh Lord, do we burn and yearn for the flames these two put out. They are so complete now and still growing. I do fear the 2 months deal will have some ramifications, but I also think something from Kate's past (Rogan O'Leary) may finds it's way back into their lives as well. Looking forward to it. The show is entertaining as all get out. And this Castle PI deal was a stroke of genius. Especially since Kate is digging it. She loves Rick even more now because he did something that made her proud to be his wife. She is constantly amazed by him and he is always accepting her brilliance as common place. It never phases him, because he knows that everyday, she does something to outdo the previous one. His steadfast confidence and love for her is now one of the central themes of this show. He knows that she is going to do great things, he has no doubt, and he is so accepting of that notion, that he will let nothing stand in the way of what she wants to do, or how she evolves. I think that is what drew her to him. She saw what he became, and now sees how he is growing too, and how he does whatever he wants, with no regrets, just living the life that having money, from all his hard work, allows him to do, And now, she can too. What a team.

I, too, am a fan of the classic TV shows! In addition to those you listed, I loved Diagnosis Murder! It combines the medical with the murder and mystery that I so enjoy!! I totally gravitate towards this genre, and have for as long as I can remember. Perry Mason and Alfred Hitchcock were favorites, even at a young age. This spills over to reading, as well, as Mary Higgins Clark is a treasured author. I adore period dramas as well, in both pen and on screen, but it is no wonder I was drawn to Castle. It has the murder, mystery and intrigue, yet the romance, charm, and yes, incredible sexual tension, that period dramas offer! It's NO WONDER Castle is 'in my veins'!!!!!! And who knew that I would inherit such an incredible fandom and menagerie of delightful people who I now treasure when I clicked into the boards for the first time - brilliant! ....Incredible serendipity!
Enjoying every moment of Rick & Kate since they married. This show broke the mold on getting characters together and being better than ever once the vows have been spoken. Last week's episode only furthered that point, and since coming back from the winter break, I'm more optimistic than ever. Of course, it's subjective, and methinks they could film a love scene of Rick & Kate and it wouldn't be enough for some people! lol..! But, I am a happy fan!!! So yes, agreeing with you that changing things up and Rick getting his P.I. license was brilliant! They are evolving independently, yet together, and that makes for an incredible dynamic! Love it when he blows her mind with his dramatic actions, and love it that she blows his while doing what she does, and just being Kate, every day. Their faces when they are so into each other and the tension grows higher and higher by the second, and we get so caught up in it all, and it just makes me want to explode with them.... YEAH! That's just EPIC! I LOVE IT WHEN THAT HAPPENS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LoL! Nathan & Stana are magic!
