Tonight, Espo gets the spotlight and it sounds like we'll get a more dramatic tone. Please come back and share your thoughts about the episode afterwards.
Hard to say as missed beginning in NYC. Seemed a little like Valkyrie/Dreamworld. Wish there was a different motive for the hostage taker, and I feel like I've seen the make a vaccine then spread a virus episode before. Was that a Castle episode? Law & Order? Also, curious if people are into Esplanie?
I may be thinking of Leverage. There was an episode where scientists created a strain of wheat resistant to blight, and a rogue was going to release the blight to make money off the blight resistant wheat.
I really enjoyed the opening as Castle and Kate walk up to the crime scene. Kate's tease about Castle still reminding her of Hooch was a fun throwback and the affectionate shoulder shove is the vibe I'd like to see continue. The teasing continued at the precinct as Castle was spewing forth his wild theories and Kate had a couple of great lines - "What else is new?" and "Conveniently unburdened by evidence."
The car scene with Ryan and Espo was very touching. I loved the feeling that came through in Seamus' voice as he talked about Sarah Grace. It was also nice consistency that Espo expressed his concerns about being a father based on his own lack of one as a role model. Once again, Ryan has the perfect response to assure him that he'd be a great dad. It was also consistent in that Javi is ready for a commitment and Lanie is content to leave things as they are. She might be rethinking that after the scare tonight.
I liked the case and thought that Espo did a fine job of keeping his head and talking to the bomber. The traffic cop was an interesting character but I really didn't feel much emotion towards her. I thought it was a good twist to make the bomber a pawn in a greater scheme to spread a deadly virus and it really took a team effort to solve this. Lanie played a part, Castle turned them in the right direction later on, Kate had her insights and Javi took care of the physical takedown.
All in all, it was a solid episode IMO, but didn't hit any particular emotions for me. Frankly, I'm still enjoying the high of the wedding and honeymoon episodes.
From the edge of my seat, I enjoyed and appreciated suspenseful 7x08 KILL SWITCH—starting with CASKETT, happily and appreciatively bantering, “rolling up to a crime as a married couple," like McMILLAN and Wife; HART to HART; and even the not married TURNER AND HOOCH” of whom the latter CASTLE still reminds Kate!!! Kate continued to appreciate and to tease Rick, who “feels the heavy hand of conspiracy,” unburdened, initially by “case,” even “back to nefarious scandal,” “proof,” or “suspects”!!! Rick’s theory may be “logical” and “unburdened by evidence, ” but with Javi in danger, facing a subway car hostage and potential bomb detonation situation, everyone at the 12th, Kate, Rick, RYAN, GATES, Tori—and Lanie—work, research, interpret, collude, conclude, and help to save their resourceful and beloved colleague!!!
Jon HEURTAS shone as Javi—former military, detective, and with his “biological clock ticking,” potential Dad, who was ready for more commitment than Lanie in their relationship!!! Javi even spoke Lanie’s name, as he figuratively and literally “rushed” with transit cop, Marissa, to save the lives of hostages and hostage taker!!! Hostage Rescue Team and the 12th team, as well as Javi and Marissa, performed creatively, professionally, brilliantly, and courageously!!!
RYPOSITO, ESPLANIE, and CASKETT were all in devoted and delightful evidence!!! Heartfelt and caring hugs and Rick’s generous and relived offer of drinks on the house at the Old Haunt, accompanied by CASTLE’S “too soon” humorous comments, referencing “taking the sub,” “token of my apology,” and being “on the wrong track,” underline the caring teamwork of hardworking professionals, dear friends, and loving couples!!! Kudos to all regular cast and to guest cast actors, to writer David AMANN and director Jeannot SWARC, and to the entire CASTLE crew and team!!!
Apologies for my less then positive reaction. Not because it was negative, but because it was not thought out and I should not have posted. With the delays, missing the beginning and the sh*tstorm going on, I really wasn't very focused on the episode.
Good episode overall, and nice to see the focus on Espo.
BUT, I have some nits, the big one being the identity of the mastermind. She's a GAO employee supervising auditors reviewing the drug company with the H1N1 vaccine. A Federal employee can't own stock in a company he/she audits, negotiates with, inspects products, etc OR supervises those who do. And she'd have to file an annual financial disclosure form that showed she owned that stock. I suppose she could have been planning to resign before the next filing deadline but it still seems sloppy.
My other nits are of the they didn't do their homework variety -
There is no 7th Avenue Express; there are 3 lines that run under 7th Ave and a New Yorker would refer to them by Number (i.e. "the 1 Train). Chalk this one up to making it less confusing for viewers not familiar with NYC or another generic shorthand for NYC locations like the 12 Precinct or Hudson University.
Operas are performed at Lincoln Center, not Broadway theaters. And the Lincoln Center houses are quite large so the plot point of exposing a lot of people to the virus would still apply.
"Close escrow" is a California (West Coast?) thing; on the East Coast we just say "close".

I actually felt much the same as you did. Although I really liked the episode, I didn't love it as I have some others this season. I've seen the someone released virus to make a fortune from the cure/vaccine plot on several shows. There was a similar plot on NCIS: New Orleans just a few weeks ago and I know I've seen it at least two or three times before that.
And as you say, with the delays, interruptions, and everything going on in the world last night, it was all very distracting and probably took away from my overall enjoyment of this episode.

I thought the same thing about the trains as I've never heard of any line referred to as the "7th Avenue Express" and I wondered why they just didn't say the opera was at Lincoln Center as that's where operas are performed in NYC. Just little nits that I'm sure no one outside of the NYC area would even notice of but they were a bit distracting for those of us who do live here.
Since they film in LA they have to use what is available at the studios there. I think they always try and use fake names to the real places so people don't think something really happened on a subway run or building they know in NYC?
I always find people who have no idea that it's filmed in LA and not NY.

Recording problems!!! Missed MOST of the show and don't know how it ended. What little I did see was pretty good.
IKR No help at all.
Hopefully ABC will air this episode as a spring repeat for those who missed it the first time.

I'm guessing the link won't stay for long.
