So tonight we're opening the door to new mythology and will likely be left with unanswered questions. Hmmm, that should give us plenty to discuss afterwards! Hope to see you right back here to do just that after you've watched the show.
ANY trust Kate had in Rick is GONE!!!
The first segment was filled with such awesome emotional intensity. Stana was fantastic and Espo and Ryan also had an incredible urgency about them. I loved Kate tackling the junkyard worker and then was a bit shocked when she almost broke his finger in interrogation. "Driven" was a perfect title for this episode! I give a lot of credit to the production team too. The scenes were very fast paced and sometimes it seemed as though the camera was being held by someone who was running right along with the team. It totally drew me into the urgency they all felt.
We only saw Gates the one time but it was nice that no doubt was left about her full support for the investigation. The FBI involvement was appropriate and I liked that it never overshadowed what the team was doing. Bringing Vinnie, "The Scar", Cardano back was a great surprise and it worked quite well.
I LOVED how they handled the 2 month time jump! I was worried about that being awkward but the beautifully edited montage they created of Kate's dogged research, was fantastic. I must admit to a close-to-tears moment when we saw Kate rebuilding the murder board behind the shutters in her apartment with all of the evidence in Castle's case.
They sure did a nice job of making Nathan look like he'd been floating in a dinghy for days. The sunburn and long hair and light beard were very realistic ( and kinda HOT ). The first reunion scene at the hospital was so well acted by Stana. She was so sure she would awaken Castle and have that reunion she feared she'd never get. You could see every subtle little change in her face as she realized that he was unconscious. I liked the way they managed to involve Lanie and that she was able to come up with some solid clues. I'm sure we'll see the fruits of that in episode #2.
Kudos to Nathan for the way he played Castle awakening and having no memory of the past 2 months. Again, it was very believable to me. He's as confused as everyone else but also equally determined to find the truth. I was happy that he wanted to go to the camping site and was so sure it was out of character for him. As Marlowe and Amann promised, it appears to me that Castle and Kate will face this together and will be the great crime solving team they usually are.
I have to mention the whole thread of doubt that's woven through the episode. That's another thing that I was worried would get too dark for my taste. I didn't feel that way at all. I thought Ryan and Espo were totally in character with their reactions and I thought that Kate's brief waver of doubt was totally warranted in the face of the mounting evidence and the comments from all of the people around her. She never completely went there but did lean a bit for a time and I think that's perfectly human. The end of the episode left no doubt in my mind that she knew Castle was not behind all of this. I also think that the lack of intimacy between them in this episode was very normal. Kate desperately needed answers and Castle was so totally blindsided that they both need to get their feet back on the ground.
Speaking of the ending, the final scene in their bedroom felt 100% right to me. How could there not be an awkwardness? I loved Kate's admission about her methods for hanging onto hope. I love that Castle apologized, though he doesn't understand it himself, and most of all, I love that Castle was very wise in voicing that they really can't just pick up where they left off. That's perfectly true and also opens the door to them facing this together and growing even closer. I, too, was left with the confidence that they'll definitely get there.
I just have to mention 2 other close-to-tears moments. One was when Kate went to the loft the first time to question Martha and Alexis. Susan Sullivan hit it out of the park with her teary eyed reassurance to Kate of Castle's love and commitment. The other moment was when Espo brought Kate coffee. Totally choked me up!
Truthfully, it's moments like the 2 I just mentioned, as well as the shutters murder board, bringing Vinne back and that last scene in the bedroom that made this a very satisfying premier for me. It was good storytelling with fantastic acting and had those special moments that I love about this show. I'm fired up for another great season!
I gotta say even tho I spreed it I still had my theories and it didnt come close to what I watched tonight. Way to make me wonder and keep me on the edge of my seat. I had fun. I thought i was in a movie theater that first 10 mins of the episode. My nerves is shot. Her moms wedding dress i hate that it got messed up. Great premiere everyone was superb. I enjoyed it tremendously.
I originally thought it may be Castle's dad that involved and Castle has to keep it a secret somehow. This is intriguing!
I thought Espo's reaction was expected, but too fast. It seemed odd to question Castle because of the bag drop, when there are so many possible reasons Castle might have done that. It makes it seem like Espo wanted Castle to have faked it which makes me wonder if there is something from a storytelling point of view that the writers are setting up, or is it just that Espo moves between reason and emotion very easily when it comes to Beckett loyalty.
I loved 7x01, DRIVEN'S intense pace, Kate's and other characters' emotional roller coasters, and frantic--unrelenting searches for CASTLE, despite the fake Henry JENKINS and the questionably credible FBI Agent!!! Stana rocked every layer and nuance of Kate's efforts, traumas, and discoveries--I found Nathan, Seamus, Jon, Penny, Susan, Molly, and Tamala also amazing!!! Agree that for now, Kate is more traumatized than Rick--although facing their future together, Kate's and Rick's sadness, tears, and devotion are heart-wrenching!!! Love that CASKETT are, after believable doubts and hurt, together, at home, and facing their challenges and searches together!!! Burning car, fire hose water, crushed car--BAMF Kate in the auto junk yard and in interrogation—CASTLE’S precinct chair--coffee scene--hospital scenes--dingy and campsite--Martha's assurance that Rick had no misgivings, "Katherine, he couldn't wait to marry you"--and clues to pursue ($10,000.00 payment, key, Dengue fever antibodies, unpublished STORM book/tsunami fears, healed bullet wound)!!! CASKETT tears shared--on to more answers in MONTREAL and during Season 7!!! I do believe that they will get there and that they will find their way home!!! On to a CASKETT wedding!!!
Alfred SOLE'S set design; Luke REICHLE'S costume; Elizabeth's makeup; Robert DUNCAN'S score; Rob BOWMAN'S cinematography; sound; lighting; editing--and David AMANN and AWM--Wow!!! to all team, crew, and cast!!!
And you know a show has had a long run when the 15 year old kid is now an adult old enough to drink celebratory Champaign.
What I love about the Castle character is his ability to reason even when he's clueless as to what happened. There was this haunting conviction to his voice that kept whispering....I did not do what you think I did. I am not who you think I am. I will show you rather than tell you.... And then the Beach scene happens...and he sets Kate straight...she has no choice but to believe in him after they find out this is the wrong guy. She knows now that even though he doesn't know the truth, he is telling no lies. He is laying groundwork to prove he is not only innocent, but also, show the world how much he loves Kate Beckett. There is so much more to his character than meets the eye. Someone didn't want him married to Kate and somehow his book research for Tropical Storm has more than ruffled some feathers. I wonder if something happened in Chicago that he wasn't aware of, but had a direct impact on this ARC.
It's nice that Kate stood by her man, and she had every right not to...she was confused and hurt, and I am sure, very alone inside. No doubt she died along with him in the crash. Martha helped so much. As the evidence mounted, painting a rough exterior and interior of Castle, she held out hope, as he would, that the evidence is not always the correct story. No doubt, he has a past as well, and we have seen a lot of it, but this, no one saw coming.
What is curious is the memory loss....it's kind of like he was slipped a "roofie" and woke up with no recollection of what he has done. Not sure if I liked it, but it will add relevance as we go on. As he finds out more, I believe he will rely on Kate for support. It's time for her to be his voice of reason as the evidence leads us down the path. What will be interesting to see is how Castle and Caskett react as they inch closer to the truth. I hope everyone will rally around him when they see what really happened. Oh Geez...What did really happen? LOL
The coffee scene was great, but what really struck me was Ryan and how disappointed he was in Castle as the evidence became reality in a tense situation. Ryan always looked up to him and always sought his council in matters of importance. He was devastated. More so than Espo turning on Castle. It was almost as if Espo expected this from Castle and Jimmy just didn't want to believe it. In the end, Kate and Ryan were more accepting of Rick's situation than Espo was. Rick will have to win Javier over because if you hurt Kate, you hurt him.
As this season unfolds, I am wondering if there is going to be the "Two parter of Two Parters?
Questions abound and we are swimming in the whirlpool accepting that something is going to pull us down. You can come up with a million scenarios as to who is behind this...3XK?...The Dude from the Future?...maybe Castle's Dad's Enemies again, Sophia Turner...A disgruntled Postal Worker(Sorry..could't resist)...Bracken's Right Hand Man...or someone we don't even know from the CIA(I mean, I am sure Rick did some "Consulting" while being "Handled" by Sophia Turner) He speaks the lingo, he gets into places he shouldn't, he sees things that no else sees, he hypothesizes better than anyone ...he gets in your mind and he walks two steps ahead...it's is frightening how good he is at understanding even the most complex evil minds and turning them to mush. But then, we have to know who is brilliant enough to give him amnesia to block out two months of a life. Who can do this? Some will say...NO One!....Castle really did remember and is playing the con game. Wow...make up your own mind and try to outguess the writers. Brilliant..Absolutely Brilliant. Good story and I will enjoy watching Castle take the SOB down who did this to him. Where Beckett took Bracken, Rick will take this person. The two of them are unstoppable and that is why someone did not want this marriage to take place.
But how great is it that the two stayed together and pulled closer even in this sea of confusion and damning evidence. She loves him so much, trusting or not, and that is something the competition did not count on. So Driven lays the ground work for them to begin the long journey back to each other and the truth. Because as Beckett remembers, the truth will set you free.
I said that I was disappointed and disillusioned over the finale and I would love to eat my words that I didn't care if the show lived or died. My wife fed me spoon by spoon last night and I was glad to eat.
Yea Castle Crew.!!!..awesome show and based on the ratings, American thought so .
I am quite curious to see what direction they are going to go with all this. Although the usual suspects have apparently been eliminated, I have to think Castle's dad is aware of what's been happening. He told Castle in Hunt that he had always followed what was going on in his son's life, even to the point of knowing about Alexis' kidnapping and who was behind it. No way he hasn't seen all the publicity about Castle's disappearance.
I was a bit disappointed with Espo and Ryan. Although Kate had her moments, in the end she chose to believe in Castle. They should know by now that the evidence can sometimes be deceiving. They've seen it in many other cases, most especially in Probable Cause. The evidence against Castle then was quite damning but false. Same here, even though the evidence suggests one thing, they should realize that it was most likely fabricated.
One of the little things that caught my attention was that sunburned, exposed to the elements look that Castle's face had when he was found. That disappeared pretty quickly once he left the hospital!
I have to think that Marlowe, Amann, etc. have to had this plotline pretty well planned out, to have planted the seed in the season 6 finale and carry it forward through this season. Can't wait to see what they have come up with. Unlike the JB storyline that was brought out every once in a while, this storyline is something that will hang over them throughout this season until they get the answers.
First, every theory I have tried to come up with about what happened to cause Castle's two month memory loss, keeps getting holes poked into it by the more logical side of my brain but, mom actually came up with an interesting suggestion that I don't think has been mentioned yet, hypnosis. And, while that might be the least possible of ideas, it does present an interesting theory to think about.
Second, my favorite scene. Kate taking down the guy at the junkyard.
But when you disregard history, muddle what was once held sacred and dear, you're pulling upon a thread and unraveling the tapestry, the magic, of what was once beautifully created and the landscape alters and the storyline becomes something else.
Kate's "One and Done" was both a challenge (catch me if you can) and a character revelation. For 6 seasons, we lived with the gal who said romance was dead every Saturday night, hidden in her mother's murder and in nowhere relationships, a mystery Castle was never going to solve. "One and done", future Senator, through a series of unfortunate events, is brought together with a twice divorced playboy writer and father. Destiny. We cannot disappoint the Universe.
Then we threw canon out the window for a slapstick comedic finale. We could argue ad nauseam over how "One and Done" wasn't really that important to the storyline or the plausibility of a college student not knowing whether marriage in Vegas was real or not but it's irrelevent because it's stick a fork in it done, over, finis, victimize by a plot device. And so I waited all summer to see the prize for the heavy price of what was once sacred.
And I'm still waiting. Castle is kidnap. As the FBI said, he could have been nabbed in the city. In other words, the finale could have been just another case and Castle gets nabbed before he returns to the loft. Castle is found by accident. Okay, so they used "One and Done" to pay for a plot device that interrupted a promised wedding so I could wait all summer to find out the obvious that Castle is still alive just to introduce a new thread/subplot for season 7. Looking at it in terms of cost/benefit analysis, I want my money back.
Okay, moving right along. Let's not get hung up on one aspect of the show or two if you count the wedding interruption. So, Castle is missing for 2 months and evidence mounts against him. He wakes up and has amnesia. As one of my coworker describes it, "This has a very Dallas feel to it." Uh-oh, more cheesy plot device. But hey, we've seen this before with season 5, episode 5, "Probable Cause". The gang should be used to mounting evidence against Castle by now because they didn't falter back then.
Ryan: "Hey, you don't really think that Castle had anything to do with this do ya?"
Esposito: "No. C'mon man he's my friend too. The best thing we can do is try and prove this evidence is wrong."
Hasn't the man shown loyalty beyond the shadow of any doubt? Refusing to leave when one of the gang is standing on a bomb? Staying and figuring out the arsonist? Disarming a nuclear device and saving NYC? Being an accessory by hiding a fugitive? Risking reputational and financial ruin to take down a Senator? Why the doubt in the season 7 premiere?
And let's not forget the lessons from the epic season 4 finale.
Beckett: "Why should I listen to you? How am I even suppose to trust anything that you say?"
Castle: "How are you s... Because of everything we've been through together! Four years I've been right here! Four years just waiting for you to open your eyes to see that I'm right here. And I'm more than a partner."
Except we're now in season 7 and "Always" is a fading mirage from a distant land. The Castle tapestry changed. My beloved show from 1x01 to the take down of Bracken in 6x22 was one story that I will treasure for a very long time. This new tapestry, Castle 2.0, is different. In my eyes, 6x23 and 7x01 are a two parter, maybe three if 7x02 concludes the amnesia/kidnapping subplot. I wasn't satisfied with the answers to the questions from the cliffhanger after waiting all summer so I'm still not pleased. Still early in the season but maybe they'll surprise me and be better than the original show but I've always hated that logic of expecting your viewers/customers to stick around because one day they'll be happy again. Just wait and see.
I will wait. And see. From recording. At my convenience. Without commercials. Hey, consolation prize: The Big Bang Theory is on Monday nights for now.
