SPOILERS.... I was finally able to discuss this with an OCD Star Wars fan yesterday when I was volunteering at the MIM (MIM.ORG). This man had not only seen all the movies but had read all the books, graphic novels, tv cartoons etc. I know that the Star Trek universe rally watches the "history" and if something happens then it becomes part of the story from that point on. I don't think Star Wars is true to that as there were so many different things going on between the lore of the books and the way the other avenues took off. I did read a couple of the books years ago. The books had Leia and Han having twins, a bit and girl, just like Luke and Leia. That alone made me think that Rey was indeed a Skywalker but Leia's not Luke. In the books, the guy told me that Luke became so powerful that he could fidgety planets with the force. He decided he was too powerful for the universe and so retreated to a planet island to live his life alone. If they are following some of the book history then it makes more sense that they did what they did. But..Han does not die in the books like he did. JJ is not writing the next movie. He handed it off to another writer. I read he did tell him where he was taking the story. I thought he did a good job connecting loyal fans to the new movie. I did hear that some of the loyal fan base was not real happy with some of the plot twists. I love that the new kickass character is a girl. She really kicked her brother without even getting any training. She just figured out that she was flowing with the force. She instinctively knew to calm her trade to focus the force. I LOVED her character! Ok back to bed for a few hours... Sent from my SM-N910V using proboards ********************spoilers********************spoilers******************** I do remember reading about the twins in "Splinter of the Mind's Eye" a very long time ago. I thought Disney said they would not follow any books nor series from any source other than the movies? ********************spoilers********************spoilers********************

I've read most of the books. "Splinter of the Minds Eye" was about Luke & Leia, written before their relationship was revealed in "Return of the Jedi", so it had Leia completely non-Force sensitive. In the books that followed "Jedi" Leia & Han had a set of twins (boy & girl) and another son. The younger son died and the older one eventually turned Dark then was killed by his sister. And Luke had a son, Ben.
A lot of the later books got bogged down with super villains. The other problem was that the various authors couldn't seem to agree on what to do with Leia and her Force abilities, until the last set when she finally stopped being a politician and became a full time Jedi. So I think it was a good idea to decide nothing in these books was canon.

Sounds like it was a good idea to ignor these books from what you said they didn't have anyone watching out for some flow to the story. Looks like we will get to be surprised when the next movie come out. So...do you think Rey is Luke's daughter or another child of Han and Leia?

I'll go with Luke's. The music when she was fighting "Ben" sounded like Luke's theme. Plus the symbolism of the desert planet.

I have tickets for Monday! Also, my husband has the day off and we actually have a babysitter which means we can go see it together. That is some kind of Christmas miracle! Even more fun, we'll be seeing it at the movie theater where we first met when we were 18 (we both worked there). Can you tell I'm excited? I've been mostly avoiding this thread (wanting to remain spoiler free) but I'll come back and read through it all after Monday!

Mind blown.
Han Solo is dead. I feel a piece of my heart has gone with him.

OKay, my family has seen this three times now, me, just once, but I need to go again. The boys keep telling me it gets better with every viewing, and you pick up on more and more. Just a fantastic installment to the sensation I have always enjoyed!
I have to say this movie was very intriguing. I think JJ Abrams rocked it, and it surely appeals to almost every age. Those older of us who were around when Star Wars IV came out in the 70's is just in love with it today, as back then! I found a bubbling up of emotion when I saw Han & Leia, and yes, Chewie, for the first time after all these years. My heart actually skipped a beat, I am certain. I found all the encounters with them heart-warming. And yes, Han getting sabered by his own, well, I love it when I'm not spoiled. Because my hands literally flew up to my cheeks and I had to muffle a desperate "NOooo" that wanted to escape my lips. Just epic, in the worst kind of way. You were beloved, Han, and Harrison, well nobody else could be Han. Just incredible.
I was left with a sense of "WOW"... and for many reasons.
Intrigued with many things, but non more-so than wondering about Rey. She has the force; all the connections, but how...and when..... My thoughts are that she & Ben are siblings. Perhaps she was a younger sibling, Han & Leia sent her away to be trained by Luke, wiped her memory to prevent her from being in danger. Hence, all the connections make sense. At first I thought they may be twins, but then Han would've known. My theory is that Leia was pregnant with Rey when Han left, but neither of them yet knew Leia was with child. And, for her protection, she remained the secret child. Known only by Uncle Luke. Time will tell. I've been wrong before, but in my mind, this is all that makes sense right now.
Good stuff! VERY good stuff.

It is entirely possible that Rey is a vergence of the force just like Anakin Skywalker was. Created by the force to once again bring balance.
It would certainly bring things full circle.

I have heard people say that Luke is so powerful that he took himself away to that place so he would not be tempted by the dark side to use his power. I think he has the power to bring down the dark side but will need Rey's light spirit to bring him back. It will be interesting to see where they take us on this journey.

Can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I read several, but not all of the previous books. I believe Lucasfilm licensed them all and they all picked up on each other's story and additional characters but had completely different tones which I found disheartening.
In the books, Leia and Han marry and have twins named Jaina and Jacen; then they have a third child named Anakin. I believe that Chewbacca dies saving Anakin. In another book Anakin dies any way. Jacen turns very dark and evil.
Given all of that, it appears they've completely ditched the books and decided they are alternate universe and not canon. I'm actually kind of relieved.

I've only seen the new movie once. I'm a huge Star Wars fan. I saw it for the first time when I was six and have been hooked ever since. It actually didn't shock me that Han was killed. Harrison Ford actually wanted him to die in Return of the Jedi to make it more dramatic. Still, I was surprised that Ben murdered his own father...if for no other reason than it makes redemption unlikely. Although I've read where some people think Ben has infiltrated the dark side to take it down and when Han says he's willing to anything to help his son, he kills him to solidify his standing with the dark side to get close to Sloke. Is it true? No idea.
As for Rey, I kind of hope she isn't Ben's sister. That seems repetitive to me. Whoever she is, I like her a lot.
I'm hoping to sneak out some Sunday morning and see the movie again sometime soon. But it's definitely going to be a long year and a half until we get more answers.

I've actually seen it 3 times already. Saw it opening weekend, then took the grandkids, and then with my husband's newphew, in 3D. I highly recommend the 3D; picked up a lot of the background stuff that I didn't notice the first time. Lots of speculation on the Internet that Rey is Luke's daughter. I could go for the Leia & Han's daughter theory except that neither of them really seemed to give any acknowledgement or recognition of her. She's gotta be related somehow; will be interesting to see the storyline they have plotted out for episode VIII.
Geeky tidbit for anyone who may not have picked up on it....in the scene at Maz's where Rey first touches the lightsaber...there is a voice saying "Rey" in one of the scenes that flash before her....it's the voice of Alec Guiness (Obi-Wan from the original, although I'm sure you all know that). I picked up on it the first time we saw the movie, my husband thought I was nuts. Then he started doing some research and found that they had taken a clip of Alec Guiness saying the word "afraid" from Star Wars, and cut it down to the "Rey" sound so that it sounds like Obi-Wan is calling to her. And at the end when she's back in the hallway, the voice saying "...first steps" is Ewan McGregor, who was Obi-Wan in the prequels.
The biggest complaints I have seen have been about the retread of material from the original Star Wars. I didn't mind most of it, but I'm with Java on the planet killer death machine; how many times can the bad guys build some planet killer and then the rebels/resistance find a way to destroy it. That's the one area that I think they need to come up with a new idea.

I went again yesterday. It was a rainy, crappy, cold, miserable day and that made it perfect for another Star Wars VII viewing. That's my story and I am sticking with it. I have been waiting for Eppy VII for almost 40 years, so YES, I was gung-ho about seeing it more than once. There are so many callbacks to the original which is a good thing. I lived through Episode I, II and III and have no idea what Lucas was thinking... even HE now admits they weren't very good. Given that A New Hope was literally made from painted cardboard and Gumby like forms, its amazing that it holds up pretty well on the visual front and terrific on the plot front. Certainly its an instant cult classic. So yeah.... I am a proud Star Wars fan. I am very much looking forward to Episodes VIII and IX. There were decades where I thought my life expectancy would be shorter than the 9 part mythology. LOLOL.... Now, I just might beat that projection. LOLOL...
