This will be depressing. I implore you to go away. Please, grab some chocolate and go away. There are no rainbows nor unicorns here. Go. Just go.
If I were to view the entire Castle series up to this point, 8x06, "Cool Boys", and not just pick out what I like nor reinterpret what I think the writers should have written, here's what I see.
Kate Beckett is lousy in relationships. She didn't realize she was married before. There might have been a love affair with Mike Royce because he understood her obsession with her mother's case or it could have just been a ruse to catch Royce. Her relationship with Will Sorenson started and ended with an unsuccessful kidnapping case. Tom Demming wasn't what she needed right now. Josh "Dr Motorcycle Boy" Davidson wasn't available because he was out saving the world.
And then there's husband #2, Rick Castle. Ruggedly handsome and rich and famous. Useful to her work like Sorenson and Demming. Useful to her mother's case like Royce but he disappears on her right before the wedding in the Hamptons. Not so useful now that they're married because she's pushing him out of the 12th and he has to weasel his way back with a PI license. Obviously, career and cases come first.
The grass on the other side is also bleak. Rick's true love, Kyra Blaine, left him to think about their relationship and never returned. Meredith had an affair and left him, saying that he never let her truly know him. We never do find out the reasoning behind the divorce with Gina Cowell but after an attempt to reconnect, Rick leaves her because he wanted magic and reading between the lines we know he saw Kate as magical. Then Kate leaves him too because she once again needed to fly solo, reaffirming what Bracken said about her not being happy just being Rick's wife.
After 8 seasons of Castle, I'm forced to see the show in a different light. This isn't about a writer happily chasing his muse. What I'm seeing is a writer and his broken relationships, his failed marriages, his playboy one night stands, his frequent flyer stewardesses. This is going to be a broken man whose third time wasn't a charm eventually writing serious fiction about love and loss.
Wonder who he's going to dedicate that book to?
