Probably the most brutal and sadistic show I've seen on television with the caveat that I'm watching American Horror Story next if I'm up to it. Sublime and horrific. The stage is breathtaking and grotesque with characters wonderfully and woefully manipulative in a game of one-upmanship where you're risking your life or your mind. 3 seasons. Cancelled. Too much for network television in both the horror and probably the production cost.
Highly recommended. Avoid if you don't have the stomach for this sort of thing.
Side note. Gillian Anderson is a goddess and her performance as Bedelia du Maurier, the Irene Adler of this show, is mesmerizing and hypnotic. One of the best female characters I've ever seen.
2nd side note. The cooking on the show is wondrous and would be mouth watering if it were not for the fact that the chef is "Hannibal the Cannibal".
