It is going to turn out that while Castle was on his secret mission he discovered Lokstat. The extra time spent away was essentially to do what Beckett is doing now. Try to figure it out without getting anyone else involved, especially Beckett because he knows she will not let it go. When he figures out who is involved he realizes it's a suicide mission. Not wanting to lie to Beckett, to protect her he has his memory wiped. She is going to discover his involvement while trying to figure out the case. She won't be happy. He will argue she is doing the same thing keeping it from him. She will say that at least she didn't disappear. Tension fills the air. Cue winter hiatus. Or, the discovery will be the last scene before the hiatus, and after break we will deal with the fall out. Interesting theory. They did say they would tell us more about the missing 2 months.

Well, they said that we would "like" this episode (although i dont trust a word) so throw in a romantic almost reunion scene before the fallout and you might be on to something. We get some ?romance? before more angst. Sigh...

Or maybe his blanked memory was not Castle's idea after all. Those recordings were intended for if you're watching this then I'm dead variety.

Though given the ratings drop, and the fact that they knew they'd be pissing people off, here's hoping they prepared a contingency plan in case things went really south.

You mean like a mid-season cancellation? I'll admit I am still a little p(**ed with the inept plots with huge holes in logic that no suspension of disbelief can fill. I want to believe. I want things to get better but in the last few seasons they have deliberately destroyed and torn down so many key tenets of the characters. The only thing new and novel about Season 8 is that they have introduced the canon destroying, season-derailing arc at the beginning. To quote pretty much the opening act of this show 'Well that's new.' Just this time with sarcasm. Meanwhile Fan Fiction has gone into meltdown. Authors are bailing, and the reviews are well, harsh and some cases worse than toxic. There is very little positive out in the fandom. And that makes me sad.

Not as elaborated but it crossed my mind that Castle's disappearance was somehow related to what beckett is now investigating and that he chose to wipe his memory so that they could live together in peace. I think maybe we're onto something but as shutterbug mentioned there are some points that don't fit this.

Hi all, new here, I think what might happen here is what I am feeling that Castle knows what is going on and playing along side Beckett the separation thing because he is working the case on his own that is why he paid Ryan to keep him in the loop as what is going on at the 12th, and I also think Castle might be in contact with smith. I might be wrong but it is a gut feeling and it makes sense for the separation.

Not that Castle already knows what's going on but that Ryan will pass something along to Castle that will put him on the trail. Once he's involved you know he won't let up which could leave Kate in the position of either letting him in on everything or leaving him out in the cold on his own where he may still get himself killed.

The sad bit of irony is, a mid season cancellation is how Castle GOT this time slot. (anyone remember Boston Legal?) You'd think the showrunners would see that as a omen. Oh well.
