I thought your review was pretty spot on. It's interesting how they showed both of them sleeping on their couches! This episode has been the best so far. It does remind me of their earlier times, but both of them are more hesitant. Castle also didn't seem as eager to try and ingratiate himself with being with Beckett. As always, the scenes with the boys are some of the best. I also agree with your thoughts about Beckett not wanting to send 'the boys' out there without her. Maybe she's thinking accepting the captaincy was a mistake? Now, this is how Alexis should be portrayed...as a helper and supporter...not the boss. The best scenes were the ones with Martha. She could always talk some sense into Castle. Hopefully she can do the same for Kate. The story itself was not too bad...I also kinda got lost in the victim's lies.

Great review, Christine! You captured many of the good moments....and the sadness of the coffee.... I'm going to try to adopt the same tack ... because really it's not in our control ... and I was grateful for the eyeroll relief this week! Edit: that must have been a Freudian slip, but still appropos....when I went back to proofread I found I had typed ... "You captured many of the GOOF moments" ... heh!

Nicely done, as usual. I enjoyed this episode more than any other this season. It is the first episode I will rewatch in a long time. I loved Martha for being Martha. The comedy was LOL funny. Alexis was bearable. Kate, being a Captain was okay. I enjoyed her pulling strings for her boys. I hate seeing Rick look like this buffoon who has to "win" her back. That is just WRONG on so many levels and a point many of us have just beat to death. I'm trying really hard not to rant this week, but after watching the vids in Java's great thread, all I keep thinking is, "What the hell happened to this great show"? Nuf said.

You brought up some great points that I hadn't even paid attention to until you pointed them out, namely a return to most Castle-appropriate violence, and the fact that at this point, Haley and Vikram still feel like distractions. Maybe that will change, but right now, they don't feel like natural additions to replace Gates.
One other thing that really, really annoyed me was a third insult to Castle's writing in four episodes. Seriously? I know the show was based on his popularity as a writer, so reminding us that no everyone is a fan is not unusual, but he's really been put down recently, and it just doesn't feel right. He is a good writer and he's a competent investigator. Acknowledge it.
Okay, rant over ... for now.

Totally agree with all of your main points, PTVJ. The thing that's still kind of filling me with dread though, is the fact that this episode was supposed to precede last weeks. While I felt there was definite improvement in THIS episode, knowing that it all went down the poop shoot in PH Dead, does not inspire confidence for 8X05.

I went back to read the comments after the review and thought the one below really expressed my feelings quite well.
Gary Ducharme Bruno Bailly • 2 hours ago They've already slapped the fans in the face and destroyed the relationship. Beckett's choices and actions have forever made it implausible that they could ever get back to a place where 'Always' felt true, because the very direction shatters 'Always'.... unless Always is a one-way street where Rick is a pathetic cuckold who will take whatever BS Kate dishes him, and he'll always come back like an abused puppy. That is what the writers don't get, if Kate wont be honest with Rick and instead does this behind his back.. to not bring him in to help her from the start, then it's not Always for her.. it's 'Me First' for her.. Rick always puts others before himself, his mother, his daughter, Beckett. Beckett just thinks of herself, what she needs. It seemed at the end of Season 7 that she'd found that place she needed to be. Where she could truly be a part of Always, but now, how can she be believed? She can finally come back to him, she can apologize for being stupid, selfish.. whatever.. but how many times can someone destroy you like she has Rick and then be trusted? I can see Rick taking her back because.. Always.. but the magic of their relationship will never be believable to me again.. it's just sad.
I feel the same - "Always" is just a hollow word now.

Good job Christine. You're really doing well with finding whatever positives there are while still acknowledging the elephant in the room.
Agree with nathanfan and castlefan8....that commenter hit the nail on the head. I too feel that even once they are together again, it's just never going to be the same.

Sadly this is the first time that I have intentionally allowed a Castle episode to go to DVR in spite of the fact that I once again have Mondays off.

Thanks lindy. Yeah, I’m half hoping Beckett will go back to being a detective. I doubt it but I just think having her work in the field with Castle and the boys is a lot more fun. And when it counts, Martha gives the best advice to both Castle and Beckett. If only they’d listen! Fjordmom, I’m trying to look at the bright side as much as possible and just hope they wrap up this silly separation storyline soon. geezer2008, I agree. There’s no reason that Castle should have to try and “win” her back. I keep waiting to see him get angry because his wife walked out with such a lame explanation but I’m not sure they’re going to play it that way, even if it would be more realistic. angie1379, Exactly, Hayley and Vikram feel like unnecessary distractions and take screen time from the characters I really want to see. Also, I agree that at some point, they need to balance out all the jokes about Castle's writing. We’re in season 8 and I’m still waiting for Kate to tell him how his books helped her get through the grief of losing her mother. Great plot point from season 1 that the writers simply dropped. nathanfan1 - I was trying not to think too much about the episode order switch. I’m always bothered when shows do that. I’m simply hoping that “PhDead” was a dud and the remaining episode continue to get better. castle88 and nathanfan1 - Yup. I don’t see how Castle really trusts Beckett again after this. How will he ever know when she’ll just drop everything and walk out to stop the next giant conspiracy that comes across her desk? I can only hope they address that moving forward but given the show’s history, I don’t have high hopes of it happening. motowncf - Thanks! This episode made it a little easier but this season is certainly a challenge…for all of us. shutterbug5269- After last week’s episode, I don’t blame you a bit but at least I felt that this episode was a step in the right direction. I just hope they wrap up this separation storyline quickly because I’m not sure how much longer I can keep my optimistic attitude. CastleFanGran - Thank you. and Martha has always been my favorite. She certainly didn’t disappoint me here. She said a lot of what I was thinking and it was good to hear someone on screen say it out loud to Kate.

I just hope they wrap up this separation storyline quickly because I’m not sure how much longer I can keep my optimistic attitude. It wasn't quite as bad as when the PI arc started last season I guess. I was so pissed about the end of "Bad Santa" that I waited 3 days to watch Castle PI (I had to work Mondays last year) I only waited an hour for this one, but I had no intention of waiting through commercial breaks to do it. My only real hope for this half of the season, really is that Castle finds out what Kate is up to and lets her know how hurt and disappointed he is on the last ep before the break.. I really hope the showrunners don't think they can just tack an Always ending to the season finale and think that squares things or we've been dragged through this for nothing.
