I truly dislike the direction this show has taken since 6x23 and the writers and show runners are demonstrating either a casual regard to or perhaps a lack of understanding of the fundamentals of the characters and this show. Yes, in this episode we get the Ferrari and I cheered Martha being Martha and the comedy trio of Castle, Espo, and Ryan, but the tectonic shift in Kevin made me grimmace and wince hard. Kevin Ryan is the most honest detective of the bunch. He is the Sir Gawain of the 12th Precinct. Remember, this is the guy who always makes the tough choices. He went to Gates when Beckett and Espo went hunting alone. He questioned Monty's involvement when the evidence was overwhelming, earning him a punch from Espo. He kept Beckett's and Castle's relationship a secret. He put his life on the line and risked his marriage to return as Fenton for justice and to save a woman. Regardless of financial hardship, I don't see this honorable man accepting the bribe from Castle nor lying to Espo in order to take the sargent exam slot. In an attempt for levity, this episode tarnished one of the pillars of the show. I have mixed feelings about Ryan's actions. Everything you've said about his character is true but stress over money issues can cause people to do things that may seem out of character. I think he took the last exam spot out of fear and desperation and then probably regretted the choice the moment he did it. As for working for Castle, he'd probably tell Rick the inside scoop anyway and this was Castle's way of helping out his friend. Is it walking a moral/ethical line? Absolutely but for the time being, I'm willing to go with it.

I also disliked the reflection on Ryan's upstanding character but I have to agree with PTVJ that he more than likely acted on impulse due to all the stress over money. Just as he reversed course and offered Espo the exam slot, I would guess he'd likely tell Castle he couldn't do that at some point. Personally, I got the impression that this whole proposal was just a blip for this episode. I'll be surprised if it's referred to again.

What an unusual CASTLE Monday—I did not watch 8x04 WHAT LIES BENEATH until, late last night, when I watched my DVR’d episode!!!?—no viewing with friends, no PFJ, TWITTER, Tumblr, or Facebook—to be enjoyed soon!!! I’m so lucky to have spent the last heart-melting, sweet, and lively “ten sleeps,” counted down with my twin pre-school and one toddler grandsons—laughter, snuggles, “Fireman Sam,” garbage men, buses, books, songs, silly fun...then, the joyful parent-children reunion!!!
Martha and Kate—I can never have too much—beautifully played by Susan and Stana!!! Their watchful listening to each other and their hug—incredible!!!
Kate and Rick are again, perfectly nuanced and portrayed by Stana and Nathan!!! Among other scenes, I loved the coffee callback and the coffee repeat in this epi: Kate’s missing the perfection and love of Rick’s coffee and both Rick and Kate feeling the love in the heart-decorated, perfect brew—with that secret ingredient, Kate wants Rick to keep secret to recognize her need for him!!! Intentional or not, Kate pitched her bad coffee into a single sink, not like the two-part, divided sink of WATERSHED!!!
Those altar boys, RYSPOSITO, love, respect, and support their captain and CASTLE—and Kate and Rick care for and are devoted to these colleagues and family members!!! I found their scenes crime-solving scenes and getting slots for the sergeant’s exam fun, plot-enhancing, and moving!!! Wonderful work by Stana, Nathan, Seamus, and Jon!!!
I’m happy with Alexis’ role and Molly’s portrayal, including her expression when delivering, “So you’re still going with your win BECKETT back by working homicides with her plan?”
I always wish for more Lanie/Tamala!!! I'd also relish Lanie's backstory!!!

OKay, watched this morning. My overall feeling is that it felt almost like Castle. With Kate being Captain, I miss the hanging out at her desk, but I do like her office. I noticed on her couch are the two pillows that used to be in her old apartment, most noteworthy, the pillow with the gun. Nice touch. Loved the interaction of everyone - another way it felt like old times. But more like season 3, before Rick & Kate became a real couple. Bittersweet. The murder board scene was lovely. Again, bittersweet. The opening with Kate trying to make herself coffee like Castle always did.... my thoughts were brought to fruition with the ending. Castle's secret ingredient is love. I would bet the farm on that. The longing on both of their faces was painful to watch. The Martha moment was golden, as I'd have expected nothing less. The way Martha hugged Kate, and loved her in spite of what was going on, warmed my heart. As angry as I am at Kate, I just gotta love her. And Stana rocked that light blue dress & jacket. Just gorgeous! Suit and Stana! I gotta say, the COTW was a little predictable. I thought it was the wife off the bat, but love the way they arrived at their arrest. Castle's involvement was brilliant and the facetime at the end, with Castle doing what he does best, blowing Kate's mind, was evident through both screens; theirs and mine. These two still have the chemistry. We just need more of it. Will it ever be enough for us? Doubtful. Loved the theme of trust & lies. That was weaved in brilliantly throughout, within Rick & Kate's marriage, with the COTW, with Ryan & Espo. Some real heartwarming moments there. And, can I just get in a little dig here.... why does Jenny need new stuff? Seriously. I'm so against waste and wanting new and the latest & greatest, especially when it would cause my husband such stress and financial instability. But, whatever. I get that it was part of the show, but blah. That old church was the bomb! Loved Castle waking up on the couch in the beginning looking all discombobulated & worried about someone petting his pony! I cracked up! Maybe that was a pony he was buying for someone? Yanno, he likes to buy ponies for people, doesn't he? lol... The party at Castle's loft cracked me up...Ryan eating that chip - I was rolling! The "lying our asses off comment".... sooo funny! I do love the guys! It was refreshing to have so much of them this ep! Why the Ferrari? Not the Buick? If they were going to go to so much trouble to borrow that thing, I"d much rather have it be a scene with Kate riding shotgun. Just sayin'. I think Nathan & Stana nailed the longing, the looks, all of it. It's obvious Kate is working her own case, and I just hope this gets resolved soon. I don't mind the changes of Kate being captain, and I'm resolved to the fact that this separation in screen time was to accommodate Nathan & Stana's desire for more time off. I just don't think it's wise at the expense of the good thing they had going. Change is good, a shake up is good, but we're talking the fundamental spine of the show here. Geez. I hope we survive this, because it's killing me. I want my Castle/Caskett back. This angst of previous seasons is not what I ever wanted once that ship sailed. C'mon Kate, bring back our Always....

CK, I, too, was surprised that Jenny wanted new stuff--for some things, safety standards change--but I don't think that that was the issue here?! Doesn't sound like Jenny, IMHO!!! Pregnancy hormones?! IMHO, I think that that was written to underline financial pressures on Kevin?!!! I'd also assert that the RYANS, like most couples I know of mine and my children's generations, save/would have saved baby/children's items for a while, particularly, if as seems indicated for the RYANS, more children are likely/hoped for--different situation after a large number of years/"surprise" baby/babies?!!! As for the stroller, although this does not fit what was said, they could, at times, need some sort of stroller for two, given the ages of the two children?!!? (:>) (:>)

As for the stroller, I know of a couple who live in NYC and went through three strollers in three years because the city pavement would just destroy the wheels. Also, I remember being shocked by how much strollers cost when my daughter was born six years ago. There were certainly cheaper versions but strollers costing $500 to $1,000 were not unusual and when I'm in NYC, I see a lot of those high end strollers. (Maybe the wheels last longer!) Also, you're right. If Jenny wanted a double stroller that could fit a toddler and an infant, that would also be quite pricey. Let's face it...babies aren't cheap.

Baby shower.
Ryan complains to Espo. Espo tells Lanie. Lanie calls Kate and throws a surprise baby shower. I wouldn't be surprise if Rick secretly sets up a college fund for the Ryan's kids.

Yeah, I should've considered that. My sis-in-law & bro-in-law have five year old twins and live in Manhattan. Their stroller from when the kids were little is trashed! And it was the cadillac model; big $$. A little point of reference is golden. Okay, I'll give her the stroller. And if they have a boy this time, those kinds of things (clothes, toys), but basics..no. You use what you have. But that's me. I know, this is NYC, and a TV show. And the sign of our times. Too many people think everything is disposable. And they needed this for the story. I get it.

I think it's pretty telling that XX had eight pages of discussion and this ep has had only two. I think the ugly twins of fatalism and disinterest have taken up residence.

Has anyone noticed that Beckett seemed somehow tired at some points and was sitting too much or even lying down in the couch? Is she supposed to be still recovering from her wound or do you think the writers are hinting something?
