So wow!...Where do we begin? 150 shows and counting.
So many themes here. Contract issues, shows in trouble because their leader is dead(or gone). Termoil, Flux, beginnings, endings, and as Martha so aptly stated:
"Is He Dead"?.....is the show dead? We saw a curtain bow to an audience for a job well done. We saw a toast to friends, colleagues, cast, crew, and the fans. Those loyal, glorious fans who have been through thick and thin with show.
150 shows. It is amazing. It is incredible. It is Castle.
I am sad and I am happy for this show. It was laugh out loud hysterical in parts, and in other parts, I had to fight the tears as we leaped through time in the famous "I know who the killer is" line that is their staple . Their trademark. It is what defines Castle and Beckett and this show. And in the process, they leaped from a sound stage into a live tv show, chasing a killer and then taking a bow to the audience. But I got the feeling that we were seeing a last "HA Rah" from Castle and Beckett and Nathan and Stana. And the toast at the end left me wondering where this show goes from here? Only time will tell.
But I have to tell you, we were treated to the best Susan Sullivan and Nathan Fillion had to offer. From episode one, where Sullivan sang "I'm just a gal who can't say No" from Oklahoma, we have been treated over the years to not just good scenes, but amazingly moving and tender and strong scenes as a homeless mother emerges to become the sounding board and voice of reason for her son as they struggled through life together. She calmed him, she made him see the truth about himself and Beckett and she did it with craziness, style and grace and parental sensitivity as only Sullivan could. The transformation has become complete as Rick reminds her mom about how great she was and how she turned it all around. And we knew the story, Chet left her a million, but she did the rest. Kudos as the two howled to a full moon with the now classic..."Is he dead?" What a great opening scene.....magic.
We were reminded of Kate's playfulness with the flirting. That certain twirl of the hair. It brought back Remy's, the "Limey" and that arrogant billionare who played Beckett so well in the hotel room. I know it showcased the inner fan girl and all, but that nonsense doesn't fly once you get married. Sorry, just sayin.
I think I know why Stana has not signed her contract yet. This show revolves around Castle. . Now don't get me wrong, one does not exist without the other. Their chemistry is hot and crazy good, but Rick is still the story teller, the ring leader, the narrator. He puts the pieces together and the rest act on it. It has been that way since day one. And it was evident the way the story was written last night. It is Rick loving Kate, it Rick sharing a moment with his mom, it is Rick leading the impromptu dance while Carli was singing. Even Rick and Ryan and Espisito. And Rick sharing those incredible moments with Alexis. This is Castle's show and he is the master of ceremonies. And although, Kate got more screen time, the writers have given this show back to it's roots. And that is why it works so well. They now all blend into together as Rick's world becomes theirs. He weaves the unpredictable into the believable, and we are left with the gift of love between a writer and his muse and their families. One being Castle's and now Kate's and also the "Precinct Family. It just works, and 150 episodes tells you it does.
The SNL bits were hysterical. The lawyer puppet had Nathan tearing and Stana biting her lips to keep it real as Jaleel destroyed the interrogation room with the dialogue. I haven't laughed so hard in a long time. And the Castle and Beckett bit allows everyone to take a long, hard look at the two and how they have evolved. They sprinkled in some "Nikki Heat" and the famous "Writer" Vest and it was a classic. It was a spoof. Kate's heel gets stuck in the door.....and Rick being the pompas rich writer. They finally made the big time and it was grand. And in the end, they got to play themselves in real time. How great was that?
So many things to say, but the bottom line is they made it to 150. No easy feat. Seriously. 7 years in the making. They deserved to take the bow and drink the toast, but where was Alexis and Penny? And a little more advertising during the week couldn't have hurt either. 150 IS A BIG DEAL.
