I watched the interview and agree that he doesn't seem to have any particular ownership of his character. Stana is very different and is totally invested in hers, to the point that it was a big concern when deciding whether or not to sign that new contract.
Nathan also used the faith in the writers to pull off anything as a way of answering the question about the show succeeding if Stana had not resigned. Personally, I think Nathan's VASTLY underestimating the passion of the fandom if he thinks the show would have continued to do well without Stana. I don't care what kind of a story line they might have come up with, fans would have left in droves had she left the show.

I agree, it's the chemistry between the 2 that makes it so enjoyable to watch!!!
