After watching Castle for some time, I have come to the following conclusion about Richard Castle. He's the type of guy who thinks the following:
"You can hit me, hurt me, insult me, say whatever you like and think whatever you like about me. I don't care... But if you touch my mother, my daughter, or the woman I love, I will f*cking bury you."

Isn't that the way it should be?

Isn't that the way it should be? It could also be a sign of low self-esteem. Which he overcompensates for by playing the clown.

What, in your initial post, could be a sign of low self-esteem? That's what I was responding to.
Him playing the clown in certain situations could be from low self-esteem, insecurity, uncertainness, fear of rejection, awkward situations, or just because he wants to be funny. That is also part of his character and charm, when he acts a fool on purpose. And we all can play the fool. But being able to laugh at yourself and not care what people think is the key. Castle has come a long way in many ways, but my reply was based on your initial post. I want the man I would be in love with to have that psyche. I am an independent female, but I'm also very traditional and old-fashioned. I want my man to be the protector. There is nothing more lovely to me than that. Letting a man be a man, and therefore, letting him do manly things. But that doesn't mean I expect him to be perfect, act perfect in every instance, because that's relative and pretty much non-existant anyway (perfection), and a sense of humor is always a win. Looking the fool, when based on honesty and sincerity, that is charming. As long as a bumbling idiot mentality, or rudeness/crassness/bad judgment/insulting/disrespecting/demeaning arent' conveyed. That is never in order.
Anyway, my two cents. Maybe five cents. For what it's worth.
In a nutshell, I love Richard Castle and all the man that he is. I have no problem with his character. He's better than ever. He tries to always do the right thing. That counts.

His lack of self esteem was, in fact covered in canon. His entire writing career, he was afraid he would be found out as a fraud because of that one paper he had paid for in school and received praise for. He felt like a fraud as a result.
Before that, he got moved from school to school on a regular basis, and was treated poorly because he was illegitimate and this became his way of coping.
He cares about other people more than he does himself. An admirable trait, to be sure, but can be self destructive if not mitigated by a sense of self worth. Even now he is far too willing to accept blame for things that are not his fault (Kate shooting Coonan, Kate's own shooting, his disappearance, etc..)
He's a good man with a lot of admirable qualities, but these are things than I hope Kate keeps in mind now that they are married and she knows he is actually the opposite of his Public Persona.
