Hi All, We had a fun weekend. We were at the Nascar race at Pocono. It was a sell-out crowd, so unfortunately, we sat for two hours to get through the last two miles into the track. There were some things we wanted to do before the race started that we didn't have the chance to do, but other than that, we had a really great time. The weather was perfect! Sunny with a slight breeze and the mid to high 70s. And the sound of those cars is just amazing, and we're already planning for next year! geezer2008 - I’m glad to hear you’re having such a lovely summer. Your reading habits put me to shame! DrvrTrnr - I’m so happy your husband is doing well and that you can finally get some rest. I don’t know about you, but I get very anxious about having to help with someone’s medical care. I guess I wasn’t cut out to be a nurse. And to you and tycho657, I don't know how you are dealing with such heat! It's been in the 90s here, and that's more than enough for me. ibmjas- The Dachshund Derby! That’s adorable. Alright everyone. Check-in and let us know how the rest of your week is going.

We passed by this house that had a lot of big, black birds all over the front, on the porch, the roof, the yard, and one looked like it was trying to get through a window. They were bigger than crows. We have turkey vultures here but they have red heads, and these were all black. Anyway, it was creepy! And when we drove by again 30 minutes later, they were all gone.

So I've been relatively absent from posting here on the forums. I'm not sure if anyone stateside has heard about all the fires that are currently burning in Canada but it's gotten ridiculous. Already this fire season there's been more than 10 million hectares of land burned (something like 24million acres plus)
In British Columbia we're having our worst fire season ever in terms of area burned and we're only nearing the end of July now. We still have a lot of summer left. Most of the province sits at Drought Level 4 (out of a 5 stage ranking).
On Thursday we had a thunderstorm pass over the region where I live ... and now as a result we have a pretty significant fire burning just under 10km away from the city limits. It's around 6400acres in size already; from being spot size on Friday when it was discovered. Over the weekend high temps and winds had the fire explode in growth. Luckily today we've had cooler weather so maybe the people fighting to get containment will have luck turn in their favor and things will continue to settle down. Guess it's up to Mother Nature really now.
But as it is, there's been a lot of fires in my province already and combine that with the rest of Canada's fires and it's painting a bleak picture.

tefla, Wildfires are so darn scary. That's one of the reasons why my mother and step-father moved from California back to the east coast. The wildfires kept getting closer to where they lived, and the smoke was terrible. A few weeks back, we had the smoke from Canada come down our way. It was so thick that the sun just looked like a red orb in the sky. But at least we didn't have to deal with the actual fire. Please be careful and have an evacuation plan ready. And I hope cooler, wetter weather heads your way soon.

I know two years ago a neighborhood area of town had to evacuate for a day or two from one fire ... and then another neighborhood had to get out during a Canada Day thunderstorm. I've dealt with quite fires that have come close to the city limits ... but mostly we've had good luck. I think if it came to evacuating my apartment downtown, I'd just pack a bag or two and go across the city/river to the other side of town and stay with my parents if I had to.

My daughter and I saw two movies in the last week. First, it was Pixar's Elemental. I've heard some critics pan it. Are they heartless? I wouldn't say it was the best Pixar movie, but it was entertaining and really sweet.
Then we saw Barbie. I went in with no expectations of what to expect and ended up loving it. It's campy, funny, and makes great use of Barbie's (and Ken's) history. I've read that there are some people who are offended by the movie, but I thought it was incredibly entertaining and had something to say.
Next week we plan to see Oppenheimer.
Anyone else seeing any movies this summer?

Canadian wild forest fires are no fun. I saw the smoke in June back in Maryland. Growing up in the Northwest I have always been careful when camping in the forests. This year with the planet seeing higher temperatures and no rain it has been terrible. I’m heading up to Oregon in Sept. I hope there are not any big fires up that way. I have been swimming every morning and then staying inside cleaning up from my last RV trip. I brought in anything that should not be in heat. I even emptied out the fridge. I had piles and bags stacked everywhere. I would like to see Oppenheimer maybe next week. Not sure if I want to sit for 3 hrs. No interest in seeing Barbie.

tefla, my favorite Netflix series, Virgin River, is filmed in your beautiful province. I hope the fire damage can remain minimal.
Our hot streak continues. There was more humidity in the air today and I thought that would keep the temperature down. No such luck! It's 106 at 7:45 pm as I write this. The overnight temp will probably stay in the 90s. We've been setting records for high lows all month, too. We won't forget July 2023 any time soon.

Tefla, so sorry about all the wildfires and especially that one is so close to you. We are periodically getting the smoke down here. Sometimes it's rather thick but generally blows away in a couple days. Good luck & Stay safe!
DrvrTrnr & Tycho, I can't believe the temps you've been having. Last week we finally got a day over 100 (not that I was wanting one) but 3 days later temps were back in the 80s and quite reasonable.
PTVJ, We went to see Indiana Jones. At the beginning Indy was facing retirement and seemed rather defeated in his life. He got talked into searching for an artifact and put on his hat and the old Indy was back! There didn't seem to be as much humor as some of the other ones. Chase scenes were too many and too long, but I was happy to see another installment and was satisfied with the ending.
We also went to see Barbie. It was fine but frankly I dozed off a couple of times. My daughter even made me wear pink which I never do.
I want to see Oppenheimer. My husband is a huge Mission Impossible fan but hates to go to the movie theater. I told him I was going to force him to go the theater to see it. I'm sure he would really enjoy it

As if it weren't bad enough that my husband spent time in the hospital and SNF the last 2 months, now my sister is in the hospital. At first I thought she had an ear infection and then was told it was a bad tooth. Both were wrong. There is some kind of growth below the ear in her neck that swelled quickly. She needs to have investigative surgery and a biopsy taken. We won't know results for a few days. At least our pregnant daughter is doing well!
Our temperatures have come down a little, but there is a lot more humidity in the air. A sticky 106 actually feels a lot worse than a dry 116. Luckily the higher humidity should be gone by early September. Then some of our winter visitors may start returning to AZ.

DrvrTmr you can’t catch a brake. I hope the medical dramas are over. I like the 110+ over the low 100’s. I hate humidity. I try to get things done inside when the temperatures spike.

DrvrTrnr, I certainly hope your sister doesn't have anything serious. You've had enough on your plate.
I took my husband to the theater to see Mission Impossible. He loves the Mission Impossible movies but hates going to the movies. He hasn't been to the theater in 20 years! of course now it's stadium seating and recliners. He had an enjoyable time and plans to see part 2 in the theater. Probably won't get him to go see anything else though. The movie was great! I'm not really a Tom Cruise fan and actually try to avoid most of his movies, but after seeing the new Top Gun & now the new Mission Impossible, I may be coming around. It was exciting and non-stop action. I highly recommend it. Tom amazes me by still doing his own stunts in his 60s!
