Hi All,
This is set up to be a hectic week. The memorial/celebration of life party in honor of my Dad will be Sunday, and I have a lot to do. So many people didn't RSVP, and I need to have a general head count by Wednesday (It's a buffet, but we have to make sure there will be enough food and drink for everyone.) So I'll be making phone calls today to find out who else is coming and who isn't.
I spent my weekend scanning old photos, and now I'm putting together display boards. I ran to Walmart yesterday to get foam poster boards only to find their craft aisle decimated and only the smallest size in stock. I didn't think too much of it and decided to head over to Michael's Craft store, only to find that the entire section that usually has such things was empty! They had two of the boards I was looking for, but the corners were badly damaged. So, I headed over to Target and found that the store was filled with stuff for college students but very little craft stuff. I found one board in the size I wanted and a three-pack in the smaller size, which wasn't what I wanted, but I figured I should buy it anyway.
Today, I have to try and find more poster boards and contact the florist about centerpieces.
Wish me luck and let us know how your week is going...

Wow, you really are 'fully booked' with tasks. Good luck...and, hopefully you will have some help.

Christine, I don't envy all the hoops you had to jump through to get to the point of being able to hold your dad's celebration of life. At least you know you did your best. Taking care of business after someone has died can be a daunting task.
My husband and I have tested negative. Yay! I think our recovery was quick due to being vaccinated and boosted. We know people with covid who were a lot sicker for a lot longer than we were.
We had a huge downpour this morning at 4:15. It woke me up it was raining so hard. Now I can imagine a new crop of weeds coming up soon. It's true what they say: anything will grow here if you water it, lol.

I wish you luck getting everything done. I remember sorting through tons of pictures when my FIL and later my mother died. Then making playlists, arranging food. It's a lot.

We had a major storm event in my area a couple of days ago. Many lost power and lots of trees came down or were snapped in two. I have solar soI wonder if that would work when the grid is down? I never lost power but my devices were going crazy so I unplugged everything. Some of the back roads I have been taking were closed due to damage. Many trees in part of the roads that need to be cleared. Try Staples, OfficeMax, and teacher supply stores for your picture display. Hope all goes well.

Well, I got my boards. We took my mother-in-law out, and we were right near a Target, so I ran in and was able to get a bunch more. As with much of the country, or the world, we're going to reach 100 degrees this week. Unfortunately, we have no air conditioning on our second floor. With all the renovations, electrical issues, and the need for new windows, it's been tricky to know what to do. But I realized the upstairs was going to be unbearable this week, so I ran out to Home Depot and bought a portable air conditioner where just a tube goes through the window, and it's easier to move it if you need to. The challenge was getting one before they sold out. The Best Buy was out of the size we wanted. We have two Home Depots near us (in opposite directions.) Online, it said one had 9 in stock, and the other had 5. I woke up at 6 am and ran over to the one with 5, as that was closer and I had to get home to get Kate off to camp. Well, I'm glad I went early. First off, the store with 9 updated their site to show that they had zero! So I'm glad I didn't go there. The store I went to still had 5, but no one could find them. Thankfully, there was one employee, Kathy, who was super helpful. She figured out that the 5 units were still on a pallet on a top shelf. She got Judy, who worked the forklift, to get them down and get me one. The whole visit took almost an hour, but at least I got the AC and got home to get Kate up for camp. Todd carried the box upstairs, but he had to go to work early today, so I installed it. It wasn't necessarily difficult, but old windows make everything a challenge, and it was really hot! I'm just thankful that it's done. It's nice to sit here and write this and not be sweating through my clothes! Stay cool everyone.

Glad you got the AC unit. When we living in Soth Bend, IN we had a window AC downstairs and another one in the bedroom upstairs. I would finally get the humidity down in the house and a thunderstorm would come thru and my husband would turn off the AC and open the windows..NO…..I would say. He would go off to his air conditioned office and I would be left slowly getting the humidity down again in the house. We finally got central air the year we moved to Arizona. He stayed to sell the business and house, I got us settled in Arizona. I never got to enjoy the AC but the new owners sure did. I remember walking out of my school in August. People had been complaining about how hot it was with ALL of the humidity. It was about 30% humidity and 104. As I walked out of the building I said to myself “ if this is as bad as it gets I can live with this. The day my husband drove in with the moving truck it was one of the hottest days of the year at 115. We walked down to the pool at the complex we were staying for a dip at 10pm. On the way back he said we needed to open up the windows and let the cool air in. I said “ are you kidding? It is still 104 at least??”. We turned on the evening news and sure enough it was still 105. That was how different low humidity felt having just moved from the high humidity. I feel for all of you this week around the country dealing with your high temps and humidity. Ok time for my morning swim.

I'm a Midwestern guy. LOL, we are used to cold and snow in the winters and heat and humidity in the summers. You manage with what you get. I live in a very nice area with lots of woods and lakes so the weather is just the weather. We like it too much to move.
The twins played baseball and soccer this summer so went to lots of games. We made up a list of fun summer things to do and have been slowly getting through the list. Rikki's craft group finally started up again so she has been busy with them. I've been getting in some motorcycling this year which always makes me happy. I saw the Thor movie too which I enjoyed. Just been staying fun busy while we can.
Even though fully vaxed, my SIL tested positive and has been miserable for the last week. This is his second bout of covid. Little Pete tested positive also but has had a much easier time of it. They are staying quarantined. Our daughter and granddaughter both tested negative and feel fine. Seeing we were with them 3 times last week, Rikki and I self tested and both were negative. We both feel well so guess we dodged that bullet!! We are fully vaxed and boosted.
Hope the Celebration of Life goes well, Christine. It's a shame you have to chase people down with all you have going on at this time.

Well, I've gotten more RSVPs (after phone calls and emails), and we're now up to about 50 people attending, some of which are family I haven't seen in years, which makes me happy. So far, I've made six photo boards, a display of the memorial tribute we had written up after my Dad died, and a board with all of the cartoons and quotes he kept on his refrigerator because we thought that would be fun.
I'm waiting to get prayer cards without the prayer. My father wasn't the least bit religious, so I did memorial cards that list all of the charities that he regularly donated to, asking folks to check them out and give where they can.
So overall, I think things are going well.
This morning I had to run out to the auto parts store to buy a car battery. My husband's Jeep has the original battery, and it's started to go. He was going to wait until next week to take care of it, but he read that if it gets too low, this vehicle just completely shuts down and won't restart even with a jump! Our local dealership wanted close to $500 to put in a new battery! So I ran out and bought one, and we put it in ourselves before he had to go back to work. I'd never done that before and was surprised at how easy it was.
And as we're all talking about the heat, it was 95 degrees today with almost 80% humidity. My sister just flew in and asked me, "Is Jersey always like sitting in a sauna with your clothes on?" In July and August, the answer is yes!

It's 99 degrees today. I was just thinking about how my MIL said we should just make my father's memorial party a bbq in our backyard. Well, take away that our small backyard can't fit 50 people, it's also going to be 102 degrees tomorrow! I think our guests will appreciate the air conditioning at the banquet hall!
