Hi All,
We had some visitors at my house over the weekend. Actually, they arrived Thursday. They were three kittens.
You see, an animal rescue organization is helping our neighborhood trap/spay/neuter the many outdoor cats. Many of them hang out about two houses down from me, so I volunteered to help check the traps. Well, on Wednesday we trapped three kittens. The vet was very concerned. They were 4 to 5 months old but looked much smaller because they were malnourished. They also had a serious upper respiratory infection.
The rescue group had a foster home for them but not until Sunday. The kittens were going to have to stay in someone's garage until then and the temperature had dropped into the teens. It just so happened that Todd and I had cleaned out what had been my father's small office. So I volunteered to take care of them until Sunday.
Years ago, I managed an animal shelter, but I haven't done anything like this in a long time. The kittens were terrified as they'd never been handled before, and they were very sick. They were three girls, and we named them Nancy, George, and Bess after the characters of Nancy Drew. (We've been binge-watching the series and loving it.) They were on two types of antibiotics, dewormer, eye drops, and eye ointment. That plus lots of good kitten food had them turning a corner in a couple of days.
Nancy was the curious, outgoing one. She loved it when I sat with her at the window. She meowed at the snowflakes. Bess was the shy one and I had to feed her separately to make sure she was eating enough. She may turn out to be a great lap cat. George was the funny one. She's the one the vet thought might not make it because she was so sick and malnourished, but she ravenously ate everything I put in front of her and got better fast. She was spunky but she hated her collar. The first time she took it off and put it in the water bowl. The second time she put it in the litter box. The third time she smushed it into the poop in the litter box. George won this fight and the collar was thrown away.
They were delivered to their new foster home on Sunday morning. The woman works at a veterinarian's office so I know they're in good hands. They'll go up for adoption as soon as they're well.
With so much on my plate already, I really didn't need to be taking care of three sick kittens as it took up a lot of time, but I'm glad I did. And I can't wait until we got some of our house renovations done so we can get one of our own.
So, that's been my weekend. Now it's your turn. Tell us what's happening for you this week!
