Hi All, It’s officially March and it’s 60 degrees! larryholmes, I may need your expertise as I’ve now inherited my father’s gardening duties. The yard is small, but there’s a fair amount to do. Yesterday I started with the rose bush in the front of the house. It was very overgrown and needed a good pruning. After watching several youtube videos on the subject, I went to get the pruning shears but found my father’s were badly rusted. So I ran over to the local ACE hardware. I like them so much better than the big box chains because I can walk in and a nice man in a red vest is there to direct me to exactly what I need. I’m in and out in under 10 minutes instead of wandering aimlessly through a warehouse with my glasses on trying to read the signs that are half a mile ahead of me. Okay, back to my rose bush. I bought new pruning shears, gardening gloves, and some eye protection because I know my luck and I don’t need a thorn in my eye! Although most of the rosebush looked healthy, it did have some dead branches and needed to be cut back. I think I did an okay job but I guess I’ll know when or if I get more roses. DrvrTrnr I’m so sorry to hear about your husband’s brother. I had an uncle with Parkinson’s and it’s such a difficult disease. I hope you and your husband are coping with the loss. I’m still dealing with my father’s estate. I’m learning that everything is going to take longer than I expect. It’s not so much difficult as incredibly time-consuming…and it’s taking up a lot of my time. If anyone ever asks you to be the executor of their estate, just say no! Okay everyone, please check in and let us know how your week is going.

It seems that you did well. Really sharp shears are so important too. Dawn still 'checks' carefully [supervises] to ensure that I am about to do the right thing...that means to follow her instructions. Honestly, she really knows gardening. And yes, yard work season has all begun here again. I had sharpened spades and forks then sprayed WD40 one all last Fall. No rust found at all. I dug several holes in designated locations yesterday. Hopefully I will not be asked to dig one six feet deep and six feet long way out back! Right now, we have really strong winds coming in early afternoon with gusts to 50 mph possible and then some rain. Taking dogs out for some yard-time now since I am not sure they can swim if the wind doesn't blow them away first. Only 27 days until older son is due to rotate from his second Mid-east deployment and come home...YAHOO!

I am out camping this week.I am "dry" camping which means no hookups for electric or water or dump hookups. I went from one camping group to another. I will be home for a week then of to a national RV event. I got a text 2 nights ago that my husband's sister in law passed away from cancer. Her brother didn't even know she was that sick.
The next day I found out a good friend got results back and she had pancreatic cancer. Her husband is already in very poor health. She was with me in the room when my husband passed so I really want to be there for her.

We had a strange incident yesterday. I came home from grocery shopping to find a man standing across the street staring at my house. Now, we live not far off Main Street so we see a lot of pedestrians on our block. Still, I've never had anyone just stand there and stare at my home.
He walked back and forth a bit but never left. When I looked out the window, he seemed like he was looking back at me but would turn around quickly, then turn right back. So, I called my local police, explained what was happening, and ask if they could check it out.
Well, I was on the phone for all of two minutes, and the patrol car pulled up before the call ended. One of the perks of living in a small town! The police knew the man. They basically said that he's mentally ill, under some sort of supervised care, usually sticks to a certain section of Main Street, and has never had a violent incident. They don't consider him a threat but they did have a talk with him and had him move on.
It was disconcerting but hopefully, the police are right and that's the end of it. Although I am curious...why my house?

Our oldest daughter is a social worker and works with the developmentally disabled. Since the police said he wasn't considered a threat and was under supervision, she said that cognitively the guy probably didn't realize he was staring at your house. Even so, she would have called the police, too. She added that a lot of times when the police are called, they don't know how to handle a mentally ill person. More training would help.

Thank you so much for the insight! That's similar to what the police officer said. He said that after dealing with the man several times, it's possible that he wasn't actually watching our house. I've since found out our mail carrier has interacted with the man several times and said the same thing. One of my husband's first jobs was at a grocery store, and he says he dealt with quite a few people like this, who had some sort of mental illness and would hang out in or around the store. He said their behavior would worry the customers but they generally weren't dangerous and, although it's important to be cautious, a little kindness and understanding usually went a long way. He says if he sees the man around town, he may introduce himself and interact to get an idea of what the man is really like. I just hope the police are right and he's basically harmless.

70 today. supposed to have 2 inches of snow tomorrow. Saturday it won't even make it up to freezing. Next week back to 70s. S ame weather prediction for here in Winchester. We already have some new things dug in and, I think, some delicate things will be addressed for protection early today. I have no idea what or how; however, I usually follow instructions well. Only ten days until our son, Chris, will leave Amman, Jordan, and get back to Fort Hood, Texas, for processing and return home. Why doesn't time fly when you want it to do that?
