Hi All,
How come it's only Monday and I'm already behind for the week? So many projects to get done, many with looming deadlines, and so little time.
And just to make me crazy, one of our smoke detectors started beeping the warning it makes when the battery needs to be changed. Unfortunately, our living room has a very high ceiling. I can't even reach it on our step ladder (something I probably shouldn't be climbing to the top of with my bad hip.) So I've just got to live with the beeping until my husband gets home. Of course, if it drives me crazy enough, I could find something to throw at it and try to knock it down. Hopefully, it doesn't come to that.
So how's your week going so far? Check in and let us know...

Please be careful. You sure don't want to interfere with all medical procedures and moving activities you are facing. Your family needs you to be well and stay well. So do we.
Today our dog had eye surgery for 'cherry eye' [rather like a stye] on the inside corner of her right eye. I never heard of this ailment previously. Anyway, Barclay is resting easily even though she likely has no idea if she can ever trust us again when we put her in the car to go anywhere. Apparently, beagles are the dogs most prone to experience this eye problem. It is rather rare for them too. Nevertheless, she is almost back to normal already and still goes crazy for a baby carrot or green bean as a treat. Many members of the Holmes Clan display strange behavior; so, shouldn't our pets also?

Larry I hope your dog is all better soon. Smoke detectors..I recently replaced all of my smoke detectors. I put lithium batteries in them all last year so I thought I was good for 10 years. I had original smoke detectors from 1997 when we built our house. They usually don’t last more than 10 years, so they needed to be replaced many years ago. You need to see how old they are and then I suggest putting in the lithium batteries on the ones that are on high ceilings. Good luck, buy some ear plugs while you wait.

Thanks, larryholmes. No worries. I didn’t climb to the top of the ladder. I’ve tried that before and I know I still can’t reach. We just had to endure the annoying beep and wait for my husband to come home from work. And cherry eye is somewhat common in Beagles. I used to see it when I worked at the animal shelter. It’s good that you got it taken care of and I hope Barclay is recovering well. I can’t believe she likes carrots and green beans. When I was a kid, I tried to feed my vegetables to my dog, Daisy (Siberian Husky), under the table. Much to my dismay, she wouldn’t touch a vegetable. tycho657, our smoke detectors are of varying ages (we have three in our apartment.) I figure we’ll get all new ones after the renovation since they’ll be replacing some of the ceilings too. This place is so old that I can hardly imagine starting off with everything new!

Leaves started turning a couple weeks ago, but still more to come. We have not had a hard frost yet which is unusual. Thankfully we have had a couple weeks of nonrainy weather!!! YAY!!!! My friend and I took a couple day trips to Vermont last week which was fun. The first day we centered on Woodstock and started at the Vermont Institute for Natural Science (VINS) which features birds of prey that have been injured and rehabilitated but cannot be returned to the wild. First we saw a talk and demonstrations of 4 in flight, including kestrel and barred owl (my favorite) and a couple I can't recall the names of . Then we walked through the area where the birds are housed -- it was amazing how they replicated their environment with trees, branches/wood/logs, stones, etc. I had my binoculars and it was fantastic to be able to see them up so close and their amazing feather patterns. Then we went on the treetop canopy walk. This video is much better than any explanation I can write!!!
There is much more to see and do and we're hoping to go back sometime.

Fjordmom, what an incredible place. I just added it to my weekend trips to take list. It's about a five hour drive from us. It must be gorgeous when the leaves turn color.

There is lots to do in that area, you will love it! Leaves were just starting to turn when we were there but I imagine the next week or two the colors were fully in play! VINS is right on the banks of the Ottauqueeche River and there are walking trails...not sure if it's possible to walk to Queechee Gorge from one of the VINS trails but it's just a 5 minute drive away.
