There were wild turkeys in my backyard this morning. Sorry, I didn't get a pic. Our county Covid cases are still spiking. They said on the news, a lot of it was attributed to a recent event but they wouldn't say what that event was. I can't think of any big event. The 1st week in October is normally our big Fall Festival. They shut down a street in an older part of town and have about 6 blocks full of over 100 food booths and at the end is a huge carnival. It supposedly draws 800,000 to million people (5 times our population so I assume everyday I go I'm counted again) and is said to be the 2nd largest street fair with New Orleans being first. It's always a lot of fun and for most of us it is all about the food. The food booths raise money for churches, bands, the zoo, scouts, and many other things. Of course this year it was canceled but gradually many decided to go ahead with the food booths. So there are food booths set up all over town in church parking lots, Lowe's parking lot and anywhere else they can figure out to go. Today I was driving around getting some food and I'm sure I'll be doing it every day this week. They also decided to do the half pot. It's already up to over a half million and there are several days left to buy tickets. I'd love to win that!

tycho657, Congrats! It sounds like you’re having a good week. I think it’s a good thing that you got the bigger carport. Are your solar panels active now? That is the one thing my mother and step-father are disappointed about in their new home; that their development doesn’t offer solar as part of the new build. They have it in California and love it. ibmjas, Last year, my mom had a lot of wild turkeys that would come into her yard, whole flocks of them. She didn’t mind except that they pooped all over her walkway. While we were visiting, my daughter and I would go outside and move them along. My daughter loved when they gobbled at us. We had the birthday movie on Tuesday and it was a bit of a mixed bag. The theater did a wonderful job setting it up for us and they couldn’t have been more helpful. The biggest problem was that the kids had so much pent up energy that they would not sit still during the movie. These are kids I’ve dealt with many times before and never had such issues with. I had to get up to talk to them several times and literally had to tell them to stop running around the theater while the movie was playing. Also, each kid got a large soda, popcorn, and candy. (The concession package with the large sizes was actually cheaper than the one with the small!) So, the sugar high wasn’t helping anything. And then there were the many bathroom breaks. Not that the kids couldn’t have found the bathroom by themselves, but as I was responsible for them, I escorted each one to the restroom when they needed to go. Well, with large sodas, I lost count of how many trips were made. The biggest downside for me was the stadium seating, which meant I was going up and down stairs many, many times. I have little to no cartilage in my left hip. I started off the day feeling pretty good and ended it with my hip on fire! Thankfully, I was already scheduled for a cortisone shot today because I desperately need it! So how is everyone else’s week going?

My solar is now working. So far I have been producing more power than I need. I have apps on my phone to monitor my use. I also have a new thermostat to control my AC. I will be able to control that when I’m camping. That will be nice to be able to kick up the temps when I’m gone. My kayak is still in California 🤪 I love shots of cortisone 😎 I get a MRI and XRay tomorrow so I can get a new procedure done on my back soon. My husband tried to hunt for a turkey on year in Southern Indiana. They are smart birds. I have heard that they wanted to make Turkeys the national bird instead of the bald eagle. Turkeys are very smart, eagles are lazy hunters who would rather steal from other birds or just eat road kill.

Eagles are so majestic looking and formidable predators. Turkeys are ugly and seem to be pretty dumb. If they're in the road they won't budge when a car comes along. Besides, I'd hate to eat the national bird at Thanksgiving!

tycho657 and ibmjas, I've never handled an eagle but I had to deal with plenty of wild turkeys when I ran animal control for an animal shelter. Smart isn't the word I'd use for them. Wild turkeys were the only large bird I knew who had a bad habit of flying into windows. This was frequently fatal for the bird and sometimes quite dangerous for people. Once, a wild turkey flew into the glass window of a daycare center, shattering the window, and landing dead and stuck between the wooden spokes of a large toy cradle. Luckily it occurred at 6:00am before they opened so there were no kids in the room. Another wild turkey flew through one of the glass windows of the town's municipal building, which was a 19th century Gothic revival mansion. It was a huge, old plate glass window. The bird was stuck, impaled on a piece of glass. There was more glass hanging from the top of the window and it was a challenge to remove the bird (it was unfortunately still alive and had to be euthanized) while making sure we didn't shake the window casing and cause the rest of the pieces of sharp glass to come down on us!

Nice discussion on turkeys I love it. When we were volunteering for the national historical park on San Juan Island we had an eagle nest in the tree next to the visitor center. We put out a scope to watch everyday. Every year we could watch them raise their young ones. They had 2 every year. I saw pictures of the one year they had 3. They would grow very fast. Usually around the 4 th of July they would fly for the first time. The parents were very happy when they flew so they didn’t have to bring them much food anymore. They are beautiful birds. They are very large when you see them up close. The juveniles get so big people thought they were the parents. They don’t get their white heads until they are a year old. The females are bigger then the males.

I remember someone talking last year about a live cam of an eagles nest that many people enjoyed. They watched the eaglets grow and the parents bring them food. They were horrified one day when the parent brought a cat for eaglets to devour. Lots of people called in to complain but that's life and death in the wild.

I use to use that example when I saw someone get out of their car with a small dog NOT on a leash. "You know your dog would make a great dinner for the little baby eagles up in that tree right over there. They would usually either put the dog back in the car or get the leash. When a nest falls or has to be taken down they find bones from many small dogs and cats along with collars. I just got a call today telling me that my kayak is on the Fed Ex truck and should be here tomorrow.

My husband and I voted Wednesday, the first day of early voting. There was no line. We walked right in (masks required), scanned our IDs, marked our ballots, and put them in the locked container. It couldn't have been easier. We know there will be long lines as election day approaches, so we were happy to avoid that entirely.
Reported covid-19 cases dropped 75% when bars and restaurants were ordered to close. Needless to say, the numbers skyrocketed when that order was lifted. Now very few cases are being reported compared to a month or two ago. Maybe more people decided wearing a mask wasn't so bad after all. Whatever the reason, I'm glad the numbers are falling and hope they continue the downward trend.
Be sure to exercise your civic duty and vote!

Well, the half pot took in almost $1.4 million so the payout was nearly $700,000. Unfortunately I didn't win it. Haven't heard who did.

My old company in CT had a camera set up for viewing eagle nests along the CT river. I remember watching bald eagles flying over our house a few times, but the neatest thing we saw was back in 2017 when we were in the process of moving to VA, my old subaru did a yeoman's work driving back and forth the 420 mile one way trip and one day on our way back to CT, on I-84 in PA, we were all driving slowly in the left lane due to construction (which doesn't ever seem to end) when a golden eagle landed on a squirrel in the open space between the east and west bound roads. It literally wasn't more than 15 feet from the road and it looked so majestic! We stopped at the rest area by the NY state line and looked at their display of animals and there it was, a photo of a golden eagle that looked exactly like what we saw on the highway. I thought that was pretty cool.
