My husband and I have both loved this show from the very beginning and were excited for the premier. They left us with the cliffhanger that someone from the cast didn't survive the ambulance accident at the end of the season 1 finale so we were eager to see who it was. They played with us all episode long and we didn't get the final reveal until the very end - of course!
I liked how the show started with Max and baby Luna, healthy and back at work. Max's character is one I just love and Ryan Eggold plays it beautifully. He was back to solving problems and helping people and I was thrilled that his new cancer treatment seems to be curing him. It was so hard to see him decline last season. I appreciated how they took on the issue of insulin prices as he tried to help a patient in need.
Slowly but surely, the other main cast members came into focus but they carefully waited for us to find out about the people who were in the accident. Iggy is one of our very favorite characters and it was fun to see a little more of his home and family life. He is also magical in all of his scenes with kids. Then there was Vijay. Such a lovable guy and a valuable doctor despite his age. The way he doggedly worked to find the root of that woman's problem was great. I always enjoy Dr. Reynolds and it seems he's most definitely in love. Never could quite figure out where his girlfriend was.
The biggest question was slowly addressed as we first saw Dr. Sharpe returning to the hospital. Max was oddly distant with her and I was wondering what was behind that. She had been on the road raising money for their cancer research program it seems and was kind of blackmailed into taking on a co-chair of her department. No indication of where she stands with her boyfriend yet.
My husband and I kind of figured that Dr. Bloom was likely the person who died in the accident simply because in real life, she'd had a baby in the spring and we thought she might just leave the series. However, she made a great return to the ER but seems to be the one still dealing with recovery issues. Her leg looked pretty bad and it was tough to see her dealing with a lot of pain and struggling not to get hooked on meds again. I still wonder if we'll see anything happen between her and Dr. Reynolds again, despite how in love he seems to be with the hospital administrator.
When the hour was almost up and there weren't many other options, I finally realized that Max had been flashing back to he and Georgia in bed and baby Luna and that Georgia was not really there. I wondered why he repeatedly said that it was always his turn with the baby and then it made sense. That was tragic but it'll be very interesting to see Max handle things by himself and I also couldn't help but wonder if, down the line, we might see Sharpe and Max finding themselves becoming a family. She wants a child and we already know that they have a powerful connection. Georgia's death also explained why Max seemed so distant with both Sharpe and Bloom.
I enjoyed the way they used the flashback to the ER after the accident but still gave us new material and a sense of life returning to somewhat normal. I'm really looking forward to this season!
