First of all, it was so wonderful to see Nathan back on my tv screen. He is looking hot! Secondly, I really enjoyed the show. I like the idea that the 40-year old will bring life experience to the job that a younger rookie won't. I like that Nolan won't back down from the Sergeant. I look forward to watching the growth of all the characters, but especially the 3 rookies.

I felt it was a good opening for a series as it laid the groundwork for multiple story lines and gave us a taste of each of the characters. There was actually a little more humor in it than I expected, but as Nathan mentioned in an interview, it's more subtle humor and not lol. It definitely came at Nolan's expense as most of the humor was age related. I hope they don't drive that into the ground. One of my favorite parts of the premier was when Nolan stood up to the sergeant and told him that he'd earned the right to be there. I like John Nolan's character. He's very real and honest IMO and I hope to see that continue as he deals with all of the new challenges in his life. I think the part is a good fit for Nathan. Officer Bishop, Nolan's TO, was also a character I really liked. She seems like she'll be tough but will also appreciate what he's bringing to their encounters. I love the idea that Nolan can use his life experiences to handle some situations differently than the manual says and still be successful. The show had a nice balance between showing that he had a lot to learn but also that he has some innate skills. I look forward to seeing more! Having said all of that, I found myself really torn last night. I've been watching New Amsterdam and really like that show, which is now on at the same time as The Rookie. I don't have DVR capabilities so I have to watch one show live and catch the other on the network website a week or two later. I presumed that I'd choose to watch Nathan live but after last night, I honestly think I'm going to go back to New Amsterdam and just get in the rhythm of watching The Rookie later. It has nothing to do with the quality of the show. It's my taste in TV in general that's behind the choice. I really prefer warm, fuzzy to action, drama. I'd much rather go to bed after a satisfying episode of New Amsterdam than to be tensed up after watching LAPD scenarios. I hope Nathan will forgive me!!!!!! .

Hi everyone
I'm not sure if the UK will be getting this show but I don't see me making the effort to watch it either. However, I am looking forward to your continued opinions about how this show progresses because for me it is always an honest opinion not just praise because you like the lead actor.

What you are skipping seeing your man on the big screen Let’s hope he doesn’t hear about this. It will be interesting to see the ratings from last night.

B Thank you 1Lincoln40! Like I say in my review, I wasn't sure if I'd like The Rookie, but ended up enjoying the pilot a great deal. I like police dramas, which may be why I enjoyed it more than others here. I also find this one to be in the sweet spot of not being too dark, but not being so light that it's unrealistic. My husband liked that this was all about the uniformed officers because so many police shows follow the detectives. As a uniformed officer you never know what you're walking into and that opens up a whole array of story possibilities. I might be doing a round table for The Rookie too and I'll post that here if it pans out. And as ABC was nice enough to send me the second episode, I'm hoping to watch it either tonight or tomorrow.

Thanks PTVJ. And quite agree that uniforms are often overlooked which I why I was hoping that when Kate became Captain of the 12th we would have the precinct open up beyond the boys.

I saw it and really enjoyed it. You knew he would take a lot of crap because of his age but in the end he bonded with the other rookies. I loved that they went out for karaoke afterwards. That's one thing I always wished Castle had done, everyone going out together after a long day. Of course I'm a huge Nathan fan, but I truly liked the whole concept and Nathan's character. He's a good guy that wants his life to have meaning. He's trying his best but still has a lot to learn.
I really like Afton and am happy to say I really like her character. She is tough but fair and even though she has an ulterior motive for Nolan to do well (she's ambitious), I think she truly wants to help him succeed. I'm also a fan of Richard T Jones. He's not happy with Nolan but I think he will come around. I like the others but they didn't stand out as much to me.
They covered a lot of ground in the pilot. We got Nolan's backstory, met other rookies and their superiors. We saw Nolan and the other rookies deal with tough situations. Nolan had to deal with a death on his watch and also saved a child's life. It was all very well done. Of course, the main thing in any show is getting invested in the characters. I'm already interested in their stories and looking forward to more.
I don't care for the really gritty police shows and like PTVJ I think this one hits the sweet spot in being fairly realistic but not gruesome.
BTW Nathanfan1, you're going to have some explaining to do to Nathan! He's Canadian, I'm sure he'll forgive you.
