I watched this new show last night and there was no doubt in my mind that NBC cerated and positioned it to appeal to the This Is Us viewers. While it's not by any means the same format in terms of time changes, it's very much an ensemble cast with a central hero and a strong sense of family, albeit the hospital team.
I loved it and immediately was drawn to many of the characters. I don't remember their names but the lead doctor was wonderfully inspiring yet human, and so many of the other doctors have very distinct character traits that are going to make it delightful to get to know them. A perfect example was the older doctor who was always searching for his glasses. While he appeared to be bumbling and perhaps not so capable, he came through with a vital diagnosis thanks to his instincts and patience. The series has the potential to develop so many different story lines, just like This Is Us. I will definitely continue to watch it!
HOWEVER! The travesty of this is that, in 3 weeks, Nathan's new show, The Rookie, premiers in the same time slot! CURSE THE TV GODS! Of course, I'll be watching The Rookie but I also want to watch New Amsterdam. We don't have Tivo capabilities so I'll have to just settle for delayed viewing on the NBC website. At least I can catch 2 more episodes before the conflict comes into play.
Anyone else watch it last night?

I finally got around to watching this today and enjoyed it far more than I expected. I found most every character relatable and yet with a bit of a twist to them that I didn't necessarily expect. I loved it when the older doctor came up with that diagnosis after everyone around him doubted him. Sometimes patience and experience pays off!
I know I won't be able to watch this the night it airs as I'll be reviewing The Rookie on Tuesdays but we plan to keep up with it just the same.

I didn't figure I'd like this much but plan to watch a few more episodes. How this guy got hired to head a hospital is beyond me. Seriously, he fires a whole department and everyone just gets up and leaves without questioning it. What happens to all the surgeries that are scheduled? I guess you'd then have to reroute all emergencies because you don't have any cardiac dept. Totally irresponsible. He acted like someone who walked in off the street with no clue as to what he should do so just decided to do whatever he wanted. I hope it draws me in in the next few episodes.

So far, I've only seen 1 review of the show and it was more negative than positive. The reviewer liked the acting but had a hard time with the lack of realism, which is what IBM was mentioning. They referred to it as a "fantasy." I guess I have to agree that the overall idea of a guy coming in and making such sweeping changes at will is far fetched but the cases themselves are realistic and the emotions and issues the characters are dealing with are too.
I watched the second episode last night and enjoyed it. As to be expected, we got a few more glimpses into the lives of the characters. I really like the psychologist. He's been featured in both episodes and I like his approach. The gal who heads up Emergency seems to be an open minded sort, though I had to question why she was in the area where the heart surgeon was scrubbing in. That seemed artificial.
I'll get to see it once more before The Rookie takes over that time slot on ABC and then I'll have to either forget it or catch it later on the NBC site.

Gosh! I'm enjoying this show! I finally saw some viewership numbers and they were quite good for the first 2 weeks, something around 14 million. I hope the show continues to do well. Starting next week I'll have to delay my viewing but I definitely intend to continue.
The show has just the right amount of heart and drama and humor for me. Last night was a perfect example. The dramatic story line centered around a young female prisoner who needed an emergency C section. It was resolved in a surprising and satisfying manner thanks to a generous stranger. The humor centered around a psych case with a guy thinking he was invisible. He had a serious health issue but they got some great zingers out of it between the head psychologist and the older doc. Those 2 are becoming a really great pair! There were multiple touching moments but for me, the best was when the head doc begged his wife to stay in NY so that he could be there for the birth of their baby. His performance brought me to tears.

I think they will have a ratings drop when the Rookie begins. ABC is taking a big chance with the delayed start of the Rookie. Some people will already be fans of New Amsterdam and will not even try The Rookie. It will be interesting to see the ratings next week.

I'm thrilled that New Amsterdam got the additional episodes because I love the show!
Tycho, I've had the same questions as I look toward Tuesday and The Rookie premier. There's no doubt that ABC has gone the distance to promote The Rookie so I have to hope that ABC viewers will lead the way in watching and then telling their friends about it. The other factor, of course, is the ability to DVR one or the other show. Those delayed viewing numbers may be a big factor in the end as both of these shows could appeal to the same audience.
