Rob Hanning (former writer and executive producer on Castle) tweeted some interesting things today about the later seasons of the show. It sparked quite the conversation on Twitter so I thought I'd share what he said here.

Interesting but I think that Castle had such a big following they could of pulled it off as a crime solving series with a family bock drop, all they needed was good scripts.

I was so looking forward to the fun solving murders once they became a couple. I know that is where Milmar wanted to take the story but ABC, executive producers, someone who controlled the money, gave them a mandate to break them up. The powers that be had no idea that the fans wanted to see this amazing couple take on the challenge of solving the murders together. I think with all the turmoil of today’s world people would have turned in to get their happy fix every week. You just don’t see a happy couple living life on TV. I hope they leave Milmar alone to explore and see what can be written showing a good relationship. Interesting that Rob Hanning seems to have a little clarity, after a few years, of how they destroyed this amazing story by ripping the couple up.

They called Castle a love story but they blocked it from every angle. From the infinite number of interrupted kisses to the beautiful but aborted wedding that the fans yearned for, it seemed that they tried to drive the fans away. They could have had lovely wedding planning in season 6 but instead it was ridiculous and pointless. There were a few nice moments here and there, but they were never even allowed a whole scene of romance or intimacy. To me the writing from season 6 (or maybe before) to season 8 was lazy and contrived.
I don't believe Milmar learned anything from their failed love story. We'll see what happens if Take Two lasts for 4 or 5 years, but if the couple gets together I doubt it will be a satisfying relationship.

I love the show, but they definitely dropped the ball towards the end. They were so scared that letting Caskett be happy would be boring, that they went too far in the opposite direction. On a high note, Rob Hanning liked my reply.

Quoting from Rob Hanning's tweet: "... the show was ultimately destined to be the victim of its own success (S1-6)" UGH!!!!! How about knowing the fierce loyalty of your audience and ADAPTING CREATIVELY to move beyond the original storyline. I know, it's complicated.

Hi everyone!
PTVJ - Thanks for posting those tweets.
So finally someone that closely connected to the show openly admits that there was BTS stuff happening that hampered what could be written.
However surely the obvious separation would have been Captain Beckett? Given her character, Kate would have wanted to honor Montgomery and be the best Captain she could be. The 12th was not just a homicide unit as Demming came from robbery and LT was uniform so there could have been stories coming from other sections of the 12th and the problem then would surely have been Rick not seeing that much of Kate. Meetings, late nights catching up with paperwork etc...That could surely have lead to some tension? Also if Rick actually went back to being a writer and had to do research, book tours, again not seeing much of each other. Also all the writers had to do with regards to happy crime solving couples was watch The Thin Man series and Hart to Hart.
It also doesn't seem to bode well for happily married couples in real life in HW because they are seen as boring. Not in the least bit fun to be with.

Tycho - I think that anyone still watching after S4 couldn't wait to see what a fun ride we would be in for once Rick & Kate became that couple which seemed soo obvious from almost their first meeting...
Ibmjas - It was almost as if they were scared to allow THAT chemistry which existed between Nathan & Stana to finally be let loose. Of course if we had been treated to those "shut the front door" scenes every few episodes, I'm not sure we could have coped!!
PTVJ - It never occurred to me to see Hollanders Wood as a starting point as most fans see that as THE end to the series. However yes, and it could also have finally revealed to Rick what his books meant to Kate. You could also have had a case of the body of a little boy (very dark I know) washing up onto shore and reminding Kate that was a story which Rick told her. His reaction would reveal whether it had in fact been true.

I call BULLCRAP on Hanning! If I ever saw denial, this, is it. Its either a poor effort on the writing team or explain what exactly the BTS was. Time to call a spade a spade. Quit tap dancing around and lay out whatever the real issue.
I don't want more BS. Either put out the truth or why even tweet anything at all about the Castle demise. Truly a strange tweet.
