A big hello to everyone!!!
Today marks my first free day after my first year in the English Master's program. It has been a busy school season with a multitude of stories to tell. To begin with, I have to start with my accidental/ not so accidental class schedule. My first semester I wound up taking 15 units, instead of the recommend 6, by accident. Well sort of...I registered for the two Master's Classes offered originally, found out I needed to fulfill a linguistics requirement, so I took that...on top of Latin 3, annnndddd...a fairytale/folklore class because the essay would count for another Master's course. My second semester, I sort of took less units, but still ended up a busy bee because I was in the TA program and now working at my College's Writing Resource Center.
Now onto the more interesting stuff. I have made quite a few new acquaintances in the Master's program. Several of my classmates were as new to the program as I, and several others were in their second or third year. Either way, we all have grown into a quite a bunch of students who enjoy eachothers company. I think our liveliest class has been Chaucer. For some reason, you get a bunch of English students together talking about Chaucer's bawdy humor and conversations will range from hypothetical brother-in-laws hitting on a fellow classmate to 20 minutes bashing on I think it is the Reeve's tale.
Our running joke is one of fellow classmates is a ghost because he is registered in the classes but for some reason he never shows up in the roster. We also spent about 40 minutes teasing him about his awesome, but for some reason so cheap version of The Canterbury Tales. We all began to wonder if the book was cursed or something and that was why it was being sold so cheap. That conversation may or may not have included talk about being sucked into the world of the tales a la The Wizard of OZ.
I have also taken two classes I thought I would not take in the Master's program. Classes that teach how to teach composition. At my school, apparently we offer a writing certificate along with the English Masters degree if an individual were to take a certain number of composition courses offered in the Masters. I took the first one because it was the only other Masters course offered last fall, and the second because I really enjoyed the professor and the class. It is through this part of the program that I ended up in the TA program. When I learned that I could apply after taking English 5130 and passing with a B+ or higher, I did. I have always wanted to be a teacher, and lately I have been considering teaching at the college level.
I really loved my mentor this semester. She is an amazing Composition teacher and I have learned a lot from her. I am just really scared because if I pass all my classes this semester, and nothing changes over the summer, this Fall I will be teaching English 1109, myself. I just really want to do a good job and really help prepare those Freshmen for their future college careers. One mistake and I could really mess up their future.
I have also been giving some thought to my Master's thesis. While, I am not planning to declare it yet, I am planning to work on it, with help, that way when the time comes. I sort of have my ducks in a row. I plan to writer on the use of folkloric figures in contemporary young adult novels, with a possible focus on the works by Sara J. Mass.
Outside of school, one my best friends got married and I was a co-maid-of-honor. I also caught the bouquet, though I have no baeu, yet, lol. And, finally I am determined to get my driver's license this summer.
