I am very sad to hear this. PJJ brought a great dynamic to the show as Victoria Gates and will be missed.

I am not sure how I feel about this. I really liked PJJ. I agree with Castlelover66 but the Captain doesn't go out into the field much.

Penny did a lot for the Castle fandom. She came to the last 2 CastleCons. She was thrilled to meet and talk with fans. She was on a mission to get everyone fit. She had a Zumba session at one con. She has met up with fans a few times in LA to go on hikes and step climbs.
Yes, I think Kate will be the new Captain at the 12th. I have been thinking this way ever since I heard that the boys signed new contracts but there was no tweet from Penny.
I remember talking with her Mom at the first con. She said Penny was hoping it would go 7 seasons. I wonder now if they didn't have long term plans and knew that Kate would become the Captain in season 8? I do hope they give her a guest slot a few times if it continues for more than one season. They managed to bring Captain Montgomery back and they had killed his character off.

She was amazing on that show and I was thrilled when she came to Castle. I've loved how Capt. Gates has bonded with Beckett and come to appreciate Rick. However, I did notice how little she was used this last season. I'm so sorry to see her go but I know I'll watch her in whatever she does next. |

This saddens me. I really liked the character of Captain Gates and Penny's portrayal of her. I do agree with others that this points to the possibility of Kate becoming the Captain of the 12th.

Yes I guess it would make sense for Kate to assume that role. I will miss Capt.Gates though.

Maybe its like a double edge sword. On one side we are losing a Capt and on the other we might be gaining away for Castle and Beckett to have a child.

IMHO,I would have liked to have PJJ/GATES promoted to another NYPD position and still involved!!! I found PJJ and GATES to be assets to the show, stories, and cast--and PJJ wonderfully supportive of CASTLE cast, crew, team and fandom--and of family and faith!!! I find PJJ to be a marvelous actor!!! I would be happy with Kate as Captain!!!

I feel so bad for Penny personally. I can feel the hurt in her tweet. As Teresa said, we met her both times we were in LA for the Castle Cons and she was thrilled to connect with the fans. It was also obvious that she adored her fellow cast members so I expect this was quite a blow for her. I'll definitely miss the dynamic she brought to the show, especially in her relationship with, "Mr. Castle!"  |

It was interesting to see how PJJ/Capt. Gates played out...wondering how strict/abrasive she would be....and fun to watch her mellow. Some of the best comedic scenes involved her interactions with Kate, Castle, Rick & Espo.
