I thought I would start a thread to start the discussion on what we think might happen in season 8.
I was thinking today with Andrew leaving the show what will happen to the Nikki Heat books? We have always had a title before the season final. this year we just got "book 7" without a title. If ABC is making Andrew cut ties with the show than he probably won't be helping to write the Nikki Heat books with his friend anymore? The books have been a great extra money stream for Castle. It will be interesting to see if we notice a change in the writing style of book 7?

I think Stana will run for Senate and lose. This will open up season 9 for a LT or Captain storyline. Eventually, as she gets older, she'll run again and win around season 15. This gives Rick plenty of time to write serious fiction.
Season 15? I know I'm dreaming.

I base my comments on the fact that Jon and Seamus were resigned. If Kate were a Senator, there would be no need for them in the storyline (unless they are her personal bodyguards). I think she becomes a Captain.

Well, Stana IS an amazing woman..... she has class, is intelligent, is friendly. Too good for politics. And no gossip from her. The whole Castleteam is like that. No nasty stories. Bravo!

We're probably not gonna see Kate running for State Senate, at least not in season 8. Though I think that's gonna be on her mind going forward.
I get the distict impression Kate is gonna opt for Police Captain, at least in the short term, possibly of the 12th Precinct if Gates moves up (or makes her own foray into State or City politics, maybe Police Commisioner) This sounds like an opportunity for Gates to groom Kate for her job over the course of season 8. (with Penny shifting to a recurring role in season 9 if there is one)
This is backed up by the ending of Raging Heat.
The Captain's position would give Kate the opportunity to interact with the press in a way that she has avoided in the past. She will need to be more comfortable and more savvy dealing with the press when, or if she DOES run for State Senate otherwise the political sharks in the water will eat her alive.
No Comment does not work in politics.

Just my opinion but I HATE the idea of Kate going into politics for two reasons.
First, she hated the moral grey area she had to deal with as an investigator for the AG's office. I have to think this would be even worse. In an idealized world, Kate would make a great senator. In anything that comes close to reality, she would have to bend her ideals until she'd wonder why she went down this road to begin with. It just feels out of character to me.
Second, it's not the show I want to watch. Castle is about a writer and his muse solving quirky, unique murders. Having Kate go into politics changes the entire concept of the show and leaves Esposito, Ryan and the 12th precinct by the wayside. Instead of investigations there would be campaigning, fundraising and political maneuvering. There are shows that do that well but it's not why I tune in to Castle. I hate the entire idea.
I'm also not thrilled with the idea of her becoming a Captain because it means either she has to leave the 12th or Capt. Gates moves on and I like Gates. Plus being a Captain means more desk work and politics and less solving actual murders.
I'm really hoping the writers can get creative and perhaps come up with a special task force for Kate to lead. That way she can still do what she loves, have Javi and Kevin on her team yet feel as though she's accomplishing more.
Just my two cents. We'll all have to wait and see what season 8 brings.

I think we will see Captain Beckett next season. Penny was hoping for 7 seasons when she was at the con in 2012. I think they may have told her that the Captain's position would only go until season 7, if the series even went that far? I agree that the solving of murders is the premise of the series. The fun couple is now starting to come back. I think the only way we will see "Senator" Beckett is if she is appointed after the current senator is removed from office. She could fill the seat for the remainder of the term. That would be enough for her. She would learn fast that this is not her calling and run back to the 12th

To be honest, Kate has, over the past 7 seasons been filling a role typically held by a police Lieutenant, not a detective anyway, (leading a squad, issuing orders, etc..) especially since Gates has no issue leaving her in charge of the precinct when she's away. (another role typically filled by a Lt. not a Detective first grade) She would not have been offered the captain's exam if she wasn't already a Lieutenant. As such, she really should not have been on the streets for most of the show's run, so why would anyone expect her to stay in the office as a Captain?
Even Montgomery got personally involved in cases when the situation warranted.
