So my mom and I have been watching that Designated Survivor and are really getting into the show. Anyone else watching it? And, if so do you guys have any theories or thoughts about the various plot lines emerging?

We watched the pilot but have not caught up on the rest of the episodes. I think we will continue to watch but we need to catch up first.

Yes! It's my husband's favorite new show of the season. He's a big Kiefer Sutherland fan, since 24. I also think he's perfect in this role, as the ordinary guy thrust into an extraordinary situation.
I have no idea who is responsible for the attack and I kind of have a love/hate feeling towards the politics. I like the characters, expect for their son, whom I'd like to throttle for being so selfish and stupid. But overall, I'm curious to see how this scenario plays out going forward and I'll definitely be watching.

This is a good show. My hubs and I are enjoying it. It's a great premise. I'm a little disappointed in the writing. Can you imagine the panic if the President and Congress are wiped out? The stock market would crash. I can't even grasp what the repercussions would be. I don't think they are conveying enough of the panic but they have a lot of story to cover in a short amount of time. Of course there have only been 2 episodes so we'll see where it goes.
We don't know who is responsible for the attack. They are advising the President to go to war based on their assumptions. Naturally, everyone suspects Muslims and police and citizens are targeting them, but perhaps they could be domestic terrorists. Who knows? It should get interesting.

We are watching this one. Really intrigued with it so far. I need to go back and watch the pilot again to get a feel for who some of the characters are. Keifer Sutherland is doing a great job portraying someone who has been suddenly thrust into an unimaginable situation.

I like the show. But as a poli sci major I have some gripes about the depictions and assumptions of how things work. My main one is the whole he was fired so his becoming President is questioned by some. Yes, he'd been asked to resign (Cabinet Secretaries aren't actually fired) and offered an Ambassadorship but nothing had been finalized. More importantly IMO he was the cabinet secretary chosen as "Designated Survivor"; might have been intended as a slap in the face and added pressure for him to resign but it still made him officially the person entrusted to take over in case of a catastrophe. As for the surviving Congresswoman, she wouldn't have any say in Cabinet approval, that's solely the job of the Senate. They shouldn't be prioritizing Cabinet appointments anyway, Cabinet departments can wait since they all have various Under Secretaries who can run things on an interim basis. They should be concentrating on picking a new Supreme Court to have them ready for hearings as soon as enough states appoint replacement Senators (depending on the state they either appoint someone until an election can be scheduled or to fill out the remaining term). For House members special elections have to be scheduled, they can't be appointed. I keep expecting someone to mention talking to Governors about scheduling elections.

I was wondering about some of the things you mentioned too, such as everyone questioning whether he should be president. I keep saying, That's the whole purpose of picking someone as the designated survivor! I also like you insight into the Cabinet and Senate positions...and I'd all but forgotten about the Supreme Court! Feel free to chime in with reality based insights. I know I'll enjoy them.

Just like every other TV show the writers do what works for their story not necessarily what is accurate.
