Feel free to continue to add to the other episodes we've got started, but today we'll add "Hedge Fund Homeboys" to the mix.
Summary: A clique of rich kids plays Russian Roulette with a bullet-less gun, but one night one of them is killed when there's a bullet in the chamber. The question becomes, who put it there?
Director: Rob Bowman Writer: David Grae

This is one episode that I don't care to watch very much. I really didn't care for the rich spoiled kids in this one. It was a very good mystery that needed to be solved.

I couldn't stand the character of the young man who was the murderer in this story. So smug and arrogant. This was the episode where Castle tries to listen in on Beckett's phone conversation and she twists his ear. That scene always makes me laugh. I haven't watched this one for a long time. Might just have to today. :-)

This was probably my least favorite episode of season 1; just couldn't really get into it. I've only watched this one a couple of times.

Another tidbit revealed about Castle's past...
Richard Castle: Oh, I've been kicked out of all of New York's finer educational institutions at least once. The irony is, now that I'm rich and famous, they all claim me as alum and want money.

This was my least favorite episode in season 1 although I can't quite put my finger on why.

This one was never a favorite of mine either but I did watch it again.
I've always loved Martha as a life coach and this was the beginning of that little arc.
Favorite scene was Castle trying to listen in on Beckett's call and getting his ear twisted. I remember, later, in The Dead Pool, we saw Castle listening in again on the sidewalk and Kate was totally fine with it . Progress!
It was fun to see Montgomery and Castle admiring Beckett's ability to interrogate a suspect.
It was also fun to see Montgomery and Castle planning on a Knicks' game with the mayor. That first season there was a lot of that, including the poker games. I wish it would have continued.
This episode had a ton of great theory building between Kate and Castle! First one would have a light bulb go on and then the other one would. They were really starting to be a team. It's amazing that in just the 4th episode, Beckett let Castle get the confession out of the kid. He wove a story and drew the kid into it, incriminating himself. Kate seemed pleased to just sit back and let Castle work his magic!
The B story line with Alexis was sweet. The series did such a good job of showing what a strong father / daughter relationship they had.

This episode is on TNT right now. This Castle quote made me laugh....
Castle: Did you know that in the original Greek, tragedy literally means goat’s song. I know, it doesn’t make any sense to me either. Whatever that first story was I can’t help but think bad things must have happened to that goat.
-We also learn that Beckett went to pubilc school and Ryan used to work Narcotics.

Hi everyone
One of the reasons I liked this episode was because of the arrogance of the rich spoilt kids especially Brandon. I liked that Beckett showed she was lead detective by sending the boys off to collect evidence. I liked how observant Castle was by realising that Donny's family had lost money and downsized. I liked how the 'friends' start the story by saying that Donny was a drugs dealer. I LOVE the scene when Castle tries to listen in on Beckett's phone conversation and she grabs his ear. I like that all Castle does at the end is pout and mumble that next time she should just put it on speaker which of course is what she will do. I like that Montgomery tells Castle how good Beckett is as she interrogates a suspect. The 'friends' then change the story to Donny being shot because he owed some guy money. We see daddy Castle watching his little girl sleeping and add to the relationship that this parent and child have. Talking with Alexis, Castle then decides that one of the 'friends' killed Donny. Questioning one of the girls, the story is now that they were playing Russian Roulette, it was an accident and Max accidently shot Donny not knowing there were bullets in the gun. Beckett goes to question Max when with his mum gets a call to say that he has committed suicide. Having done something wrong Alexis gives herself a fair punishment when Rick won't. Beckett is tying up loose ends when she questions what they have when talking to Castle. She questions the 'friends' again and Spencer gives Brandon an alibi. Brandon then shows Beckett a video to prove what happened the night of the shooting. Castle questions why there was a video and Brandon taunts Beckett to prove he is the killer. Beckett allows Castle to weave his magic and gets Brandon to implicate himself in the killing. I love that Castle & Beckett then disagree as to who solved the murder.
B.x

That early on in the show's run, I think the writers and executives were trying to establish what the show would fundamentally be about and set the kind of tone it would take. And even though this episode rubs a lot of people the wrong way, I think that's exactly what it was supposed to do. This episode established that Castle, the show, could balance humor, heart, and truly disturbing levels of sociopathy. That kid was creepy, with a capital C, and he was the kind of character you were much more likely to see on Criminal Minds or CSI. But I also think he set the stage for 3XK and other very disturbing antagonists to come. This episode proved early on that Castle could go dark and still pull itself out. I still can't watch it without recoiling, which I suppose it what makes it such a good episode.

I always liked how dealing with these kids made Castle worry even more about Alexis. As a parent, I found that very realistic, especially him watching her sleep. I don't think a parent every stops doing that sometimes.
