Just curious. There's plenty to be said about the main characters but what was your favorite COTW (case of the week) or killer? Could be the one you found most horrifying or intense, the one that made you sad, or perhaps it was one of the funnier episodes.
Which ones were your favorite and why?

I love the idea of sharing responses to this question, Christine, but it's unbelievably overwhelming! How about if we take it one season at a time at least? What was your favorite COTW or killer from season 1? I'll start working on narrowing down my choices.

My Favorite the Grandfather in A Chill runs through your veins.

Ooh...this is so hard! I loved the voodoo aspect of Always Buy Retail and how the killer basically used the rituals to try cover up the true motive of his crimes. Ryan and Espo looking at the knock-off bags on Canal St was kind of cool because I've seen a lot of those in NYC. It's also hard to beat the shootout at the end.

My Favorite the Grandfather in A Chill runs through your veins. Yes! He was wonderful. I loved the way he handled the interview at the end where he confessed without actually confessing. It was well written and very well acted. I don't know if you were a part of the viewing party for this episode a couple of weeks back but in the episode commentary on the dvd, Nathan mentions that the actor was so good in his scenes that he found it distracting because he'd get sucked into just watching his performance.

If we're sticking with season 1, it's "Little Girl Lost" for me. I found the scene where Angela returns and the mother confesses really powerful. She worked crazy hours to earn the money for their daughter's adoption and to keep their nice home while her husband stood home to paint and practically ignored the little girl. They guy set his 2-year-old in front of the TV with a bowl of Cheerios while he went into the other room to paint with headphones on for hours! He couldn't have even heard the kid cry, never mind know when she was taken.
The mother knew that if she filed for divorce, she'd have to pay alimony because of her income history which meant she'd have to continue to work crazy hours and the father would get custody. I thought the actress who played the mother did a brilliant job of conveying her fury and I could almost understand why she did something so unthinkable as have her sister "kidnap" her daughter.
This case was one of the few that I wished we had follow up on, because I wondered how a jury would see this case and who would end up with little Angela in the end.

Heavens! There were only 10 episodes and I'm still having a hard time making a choice!
I guess my favorite COTW was in Home Is Where The Heart Stops. I loved seeing Castle and Beckett in the world of the rich and famous. It was a thrill to see them dressed up in formal attire and dancing together and I also loved the retired art thief who toyed with Castle.
The other 2 episodes that came close for me were Always Buy Retail and A Death In The Family. Both of those episodes also led us into different worlds, if you will, and had some memorable characters and milestones for Caskett.

Christine yes I was a part of the viewing party and though Nathan's words were instrumental in my decision, every episode in the beginning of the series were great they had such depth and I stillwatch them. Such a great series will truly miss it in the fall.

Kelly Nieman of course. Oh.. I missed the part where we were sticking with season 1. sorry. Kelly was my favorite villain, because aside from Bracken (a nemesis she actually inherited from her mother along with Vulcan Simmons if you think about it) Dr. Kelly Nieman truly was Kate's Moriarty, the one killer she was never able to pin a murder on where Kate truly met her match. She ended up having to kill Kelly to stop her.

If we're going with the cases in season one, I certainly have to go with a toss up between "A Chill Goes Through her Veins" "for many of the same reasons stated above and "Home Is Where The Heart Stops"
These two cases introduced many of the tropes we came to enjoy through the seasons and established the give and take that made us fall in love with Caskett.

I loved all of season one. They did such an amazing job of writing such interesting cases while building the characters. I always fall back to "Home I is where the heart stops". I loved that you didn't know 5 minutes into the episode who the killer was. you had to really listen to the dialog and figure out as the"story" came together. This slowly eroded over the seasons. I loved how Castle would use his connections from his research for his books to help solve the cases.

Just one? I don't know if that's possible. Loved FFYG just because it's where we get introduced to the characters.
I also like "Home Is Where The Heart Stops", for many reasons. Loved the whole charity event thing, how Kate could relate to the victim's daughter because she'd been there, learning about one of Martha's past affairs.
And Always Buy Retail, for the introduction to Meredith and a little more insight into Castle's past.
Actually, as I think on this question, it appears that my favorite episodes are more about the Castle team than the COTW! I think most of season 1 I was more invested in getting to know the team than the cases.
