Is anyone else watching Houdini & Doyle on FOX? It's a fun mystery show and I'm really enjoying it far more than I thought I would.

I am such a sucker for new or creative shows...it pulls you in and grabs you....character development is so important and this show is no exception....the woman constable needs these two to do her job the way she wants to and so the three band together and play off each other to solve murders...all three have stories to tell and the more you watch, the more things get revealed....so it's fun and serious all at the same time... Very creative...I didn't think Inwould like it , but it's not half bad...and its on Fox, so they have leeway to stick for a while.

I will also add that after watching Castle, I find myself taking apart these shows. I guess, for the use of a better description, I am surveying the entire field. I tend to step out of the norm and look for things that drive the show. I find this relationship between Doyle and Houdini to be intriguing. I wondered why Houdini? Doyle I can understand....I mean Sherlock Holmes and all, but Houdini really had nothing to do with solving crimes. But then you get inside the child mind of his and its all a game that needs to be played with him. He reads people really well and is not afraid to entertain theories that Doyle would laugh at and then say...Hmmm? The two are becoming fast friends and I wonder if Doyle is in a bit of a rut and needs this .
The relationships are so crucial to the success or failure of the shows and this one is no different. As they get closer, we get to think a lot more about the cases they are on. I know I try to think a little like them and try it see it their way and how it all fits in together.
When the personal and private side of their lives catch up to the public side, it should be a pretty good show. Not Castle good, but a fun show to watch because we will be solving the cases along with them.
Now the constable...she is a different story. She tired of making coffee for everyone. She wants to be taken seriously. She is desperate for acceptance at Scotland Yard. She separates herself from the two, but she wants so badly to do things to show that a woman can do the job as well as any man can. She loves working with the two because it really pushes her mentally as she combines the ritual acts of a cop and the crime solving genius of Doyle and to a certain extent, the wit , wisdom along with the playfulness of a Houdini. We know she has a mysterious side that will have to be revealed piece by piece as she gets closer to the two. We know she has a husband or had one and every once in a while she takes time off to run errands and that will have to be explained as well. Could she be a love interest for Harry? Doubt it....I view her more like a "Mrs. Peel" character from the Avengers.
Anyway....fun show. Good to watch. Will be looking for improvement in character development and in the storyline.

Yes, kman, I wasn't sure about the pilot episode but I've enjoyed the way the characters have progressed. They're all intriguing in their own way and I like how we're getting to learn their personal stories piece by piece with each episode. I'm enjoying how their individual friendships are growing as well, and yes, I am rooting for Adelaide and Houdini as a couple, although I hope it takes plenty of time to get there. I really liked the background we got on Houdini's character in this last episode; how he grew up as the child of immigrant parents and the discrimination they faced. I also enjoy the weekly mystery. The tone of it reminds me a bit of Castle in that it doesn't take itself too seriously but still manages to weave a crime story you want to help solve. I know the show's fate could go either way but I'm hoping it gets a season 2 for next summer because I find myself looking forward to it each week.

I've only caught onto this show for the last few episodes but I'm enjoying it too. The cast has good chemistry. Even though Houdini is interested in Adelaide, they're currently just getting to know one another by working these cases which does remind me of Castle. I'll keep my fingers crossed that FOX picks it up for season 2.

We watched the pilot but really didn't watch after that episode. We did record a few more episodes. We will give it another try.

Houdini famously exposed mediums and psychics as charlatans and Doyle famously believed in them. Their friendship ended because of their differing views on mediums and after Houdini publicly exposed Doyle's favorite medium whom he continued to believe in. I guess having them solve crimes together is not that big a leap. Houdini was kind of like Castle in that he could think outside the box and didn't accept things at face value. Of course if Doyle were half as good as Holmes, they would have been unstoppable.

I finally got to this episode with the asylum. I have to say I really disliked it although I kind of enjoyed crazy Sherlock. When Houdini dropped the antidote, I was sure he would return to Doyle and figure out something to say to bring him back. Barring that I thought one of the kids would throw themselves onto their Dad and beg him not to leave them. Instead they all stood around and stared at him as he died. Just didn't like it.

"Bedlam" was probably my least favorite episode so far. I thought it was darker than most, but I did appreciate the look into Doyle's past. On the flip side, the latest episode was one of my favorites, which is a little odd since I've never liked vampire stories and the ep is about Bram Stoker. Here's my review... www.tvfanatic.com/2016/06/houdini-and-doyle-season-1-episode-8-review-strigoi/If you happen to watch, I'd be interested to know if you like it any better or if the show just isn't for you.

Enjoyed your review. We have started to watch this show after first dismissing it after the pilot. It is interesting to see them blending history into the story. I to thought it sad when Harry list his Mother. I like having it set in London but it could be interesting in historic New York also.

I have it on Hulu and have watched a few episodes. It reminds me so much of Castle set in the early 20th century with the role of RC split down the middle between Houdini and Doyle.
Harry Houdini the wealthy playboy showman who loves his flamboyant mother and has a serious side he hides from everybody through humor.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the wealthy doctor/author and doting father who loves his children, pines for his comatose wife and is a true believer (or wants to be) in all things supernatural.
Both of whom drawn into the orbit of the first female constable in Scotland Yard with a possibly dark, complicated past.
Sound familiar to anyone?
It feels enough like Castle for me to want to like it but I'll wait and see whether it gets the Firefly or Bones treatment from Fox before I let myself get drawn too deeply in to get out.
