Get ready for a blast from the past tonight! After you've seen the show, get your GROOVE on and come back to this thread to relive That 70's Show!
I loved this episode. Brought back a lot of great memories. I really liked the disco era. Although I think I dressed a little bit better than the outfits Kate wore.
Kinda thought maybe Harold wasn't as stuck in the past as he pretended to be. Loved Ryan and Espo channeling the Starsky & Hutch-style characters. S&H was one of my favorite shows.
Loved the whole bit with turning the precinct into a 70s set. And Martha....did Castle really think she wouldn't go completely over the top with it? And then Gates walking in...too funny.
I was trying to figure out through the whole episode who the killer was, and I was completely surprised at how it played out. She seemed like a throwaway character in the one scene that she was in early on in the episode.
Another favorite episode. I think this entire season has been favorite episodes.

Another mention of Coney Island. Any significance? Lots of references this season. I'm going to say, right from the start, that I need to watch this at least another time or two in order to get all of the fantastic lines and bits! Oh my goodness, there were so many things to love!
I'll start with the opening scene and Caskett being all domestic in the morning. I'm swooning over Nathan's just-out-of-bed look. Of course, Martha was Martha and had to go big. I was glad that Castle and Kate were on the same page about her plans being too much and it was cute to see them awkwardly try to tell her. I liked Martha's reaction - very realistic - and it left the door open for making it up to her.
Nothing epitomizes the 70's more than polyester and Castle had a great quip when he pointed out that the long-dead Vince's suit was hanging in there. It was also perfectly in character for Castle to figure out the identity of the body since we all know that he "knows a guy" in a famous crime family personally. (And he knows his cousin too!)
The hilarity started when Castle and Kate went to interview Harold! "Captain" and "Cupcake" and Castle agreeing that Kate has a fine a**, had me in stitches throughout the scene. The morgue scene with Lanie in the hot red dress was also a gem. The gender and race comments were nicely done so that they were in tune with the times and funny.
Don't even get me started on Espo and Ryan - aka Snookie and Ray! Their costumes were awesome but what I really appreciated was the writing of their characters and how they switched points of view as the episode went on. Espo was obviously into the idea and was the fan of Snookie and Ray, while Ryan thought this was the worst idea ever. However, as they interrogate Harold, Ryan is the one who handles the situation so smoothly, and by the end, Ryan's enjoying kicking ass and taking names. The funniest moment of the whole show might very well have been when Espo slid off the hood of their squad car, leaving him doubting the fun of this charade.lol-smiley-face Ryan got his chance to shine at the end when he busted a big move on the dance floor. I was impressed!
Castle had some pretty smooth moves of his own. He certainly has a bit of his mother's acting blood in him. The snippets of following scripts during the precinct charade were a hoot, as was Gates' grand entrance and subsequent dressing down of Kate and Castle.
The case had the usual twists and turns and, of course, I didn't have a clue who the killer was until the end. I thought the reveal that Harold and Vince had been in love was a very surprising twist and it was handled nicely, especially in the context of the 70's.
Nice ending scene at the club with everyone showing off their 70's moves. I'd have enjoyed seeing even more of it from Kate and Castle but such is life. I thought them thanking Martha was a very nice moment, even though the flowers are still off limits.
This was a very entertaining episode in my book and I'm sure I'll enjoy numerous more viewings!
A truly entertaining episode Its hard to pick a favorite scene but, high on the list is Espo failing at hood sliding on the car. The whole re-dressing of the precinct and Gate's subsequent entrance would be a close second. And, Martha and her flower arrangement ideas. While over the top, I did sort of think the flower archway idea was cute.
For Episode 6x20, THAT 70S SHOW , thanks to writer, David AMANN; director, John TERLESKY; show creator and runner, Andrew W. MARLOWE; and to the entire cast, crew, and team—how not to pay special kudos to set design, makeup, and wardrobe—all enhanced by music, lighting, cinematography, and editing!!!
I had so much fun laughing from start to finish: Martha, pointing out that she waited until Katherine and Richard had finished doing whatever they were doing in the bedroom—per Rick, sleeping—through Kate’s reluctant, accompanied by her eye-rolling and Rick’s gently holding her face, persuasion and charming persistence, to transform crime solving to 70s settings to Kate’s, GATES’ return, inspired, rapidly effected decision to move the action from the 12th Precinct to the disco club!!!
Of course, hoping to be more than a CASKETT wedding guest and wanting to help, Martha has the easel-ready presentation, of a flower “festooned” tunnel of love and a floral portrait, which at *the* wedding, would, naturally, feature our CASKETT bride and groom!!! Kate “grips” Rick’s arm—and they “conquer” this dilemma together—still pondering a wedding planning role for Martha!!! Apparently, this follows Martha’s previous suggestions of additional pageantry, including the Vienna Boys’ Choir, the Blue Angels, and Nikki HEAT ice sculptures!!!
Kate does wear a turtleneck sweater to work—after “sleeping,” after CASKETT divide and conquer breakfast—and soon, Rick notes that to be fair, she does have a fine….!!! As absolutely always, Kate/Stana and Rick/Nathan perfectly realize every gesture, tone, stance, expression, word, nuance, and layer—as, indeed do Lanie/Tamala, Kevin/Seamus, Javi/Jon, Martha/Susan, Alexis/Molly, and Sir GATES/Penny!!!
Stana rocks everything she wears—Nathan is handsome even in polyester!!! Loved the call back of CASTLE pounding on the two-way mirror—and Kate’s bad acting and belated, desk pounding!!!
Susan is striking, even when being escorted through the precinct as a “consenting adult”—a role she has, indeed, included for herself—or wearing a flower head piece—Molly can wear a halter top or a disco dress, as can Tamala, who also shines at the disco and in her Pam GRIER, Halloween costume, even though neither Harold nor we see Lanie’s caboose!!!
Seamus and Jon are 70s perfection—or lack thereof—spot on in every scene—fumbling the cigarette and car top roll—limping into the disco—and handling their un-scripted interrogation/interview of Harold, so well played by guest actor Jon POLITO!!! RYAN deflects talk of a naked, Puerto Rican cat before ESPO implodes; and we get, “righteous” and “Can you dig it?”
Rick’s “Sir, by the power vested in me by the NYPD, I will personally arrange for you to view the deceased,” is answered by one of several of Kate’s looks—Cupcake must talk outside to Captain, who, of course, in the transformed precinct—Martha, Rick-recruited to produce and direct--complete with added actors and scripts—has his “Captain CASTLE” desk, name plate!!!
“Let’s boogie,” is but one use of 70s lingo—all enhance our DD’s and their colleagues’ aka “pig/fuzz’” crime solving!!! Martha so rapidly and effectively manages, “Places, everyone!!!” Only GATES could take us from “What the hell is going on here,” after her terrorism conference is cancelled by a bomb threat, to offering Mr. CASTLE not forgiveness but acknowledgement of her love of dancing!!!
Kate, who knows how to disco dance, is a woman of many, hidden talents, all of which Rick wants to discover—what a lovely part of this episode’s conclusion—the Glitterati Club—the disco ball—Kate in “that” dress; Rick in his 70s garb—respectively, beautiful and handsome—and all love eyeballs, too!!!
The period sets, costumes and sight gags were entertaining. Espo sliding off the car hood and busting his butt was funny.Yes ! Stana rocks any wardrobe they throw at her.
I think what I enjoyed the most about this episode was the ending. The disco was the perfect setting for revelation, memories, romance and a reminder that there are two people who are very much in love and are more than ready to get married to each other.
It was revealed to us that a tabu relationship back in 1978, and no less, "Real Wise Guys" who had to look away from certain ridicule from their piers, could finally embrace and release the ghosts that had haunted them for so long. What a great final cut of Harold dancing and honoring the love of his life. It is common place today, but what a way to bridge the gap of a love lost to a love cherished for him. Truly moving because he was so happy to finally show the world how much this man meant to him. And Castle and Beckett understood totally.
It was symbolic that Gates, in her, of course, "Red Dress", would reveal to a graveling Mr.Castle that she will never admit to forgive him, but will tell him with a wink and a graceful shuffle that she loves to dance. Message delivered, message received.
The revelation for Rick that there is so much more to Kate Beckett than meets the eye has Rick dreaming of all the times he is going to be knocked silly from the things that she does and can do. A lifetime of amazement is a beautiful thing.
Espo telling us that there is snookie everywhere and maybe he is letting go of an old love....at least for now.
Ryan embracing his wild side and giving us the James Brown splits and classic slide back up, letting us know that he still has it, whatever it is.....LOL.
But what I really loved....and what really hit home....is Rick and Kate on the Dance Floor having such a great time and letting their hair down. And in the middle of all that is going around, Donna Summer, who is gone now, begins her searching for her last chance of the evening for love. What a perfect song.
So Harold is dancing, people are swaying and Castle and Beckett are sharing an emotional moment for Harold with drinks in hand, shoulder to shoulder and so relaxed and so enjoying each other and the moment that they are in....and who knows, maybe, like Donna Summer, Kate reminds Rick that when she is bad.....she is ..SO...SO...BAD......
It becomes obvious that they have nothing left but to tie the knot....because in my eyes ...they are already married and are in that zone that only lovers know. It is this unbelievably comfortable communication where eye contact and words become one and two people just know that they are in the middle of something so free and easy that THEY ARE each other's words and thoughts and hopes and dreams. Truly friends, but so in love. Wonderful
So now, they have softened us up. Time to back us in the corner and start counter- punching us in the ribs......let the games begin.
As a product of the 70s this was something of a flashback for me. I graduated from high school the week of the Watergate break in. I was in my 2nd year of law school in the spring of '78, though what's most memorable for me that year was the Blizzard of '78 that February. And yes, I did own short, polyester dresses, and "satin" pants & tops, even jumpsuits, and sweaters similar to Kate's. But unlike Gates, who, while younger is still old enough to remember that decade, I never did learn how to dance, or ever go to a disco (unless you count the disco nights at my college reunions), though I do know all the music, with "70s on 7" one of the 2 main stations I listen to in the car.
IMO they did a really good job capturing the pop culture of the era. I had expected some nostalgic or deprecatory comments from Martha, though.
I know I am late to the party but really enjoyed the show. Being a baby boomer I lived and party during that time. I wore my share of polyester, wore platform shoes.,bell bottoms with cuffs, white belt and zipper shirts ( thank God those days are over) My favorite part was when Kate grab Castle back when Martha was talking. Kate look a ventriloquist controlling Castle with her back on his back.
I've watched the episode a FEW (cough, cough) times now ...... and I'm still thoroughly entertained! While seeing Espo slide off the car is still my favorite LOL moment, I've also cracked up every time Kate's reading her script and remembers to pound on her desk. Stana's delivery is PERFECT!
I also loved the earlier scene when Espo is watching Snookie and Ray. Ryan chastises him for being off task and then Espo hauls his chair over to watch. I always enjoy the moments of physical comedy on this show.
One more great moment is when Kate and Castle are first at Harold's house and Castle rolls his eyes and says, "Rookies." OMG - what a classic! I hope they let Nathan keep the desk sign that says, "Captain Castle."
Have I mentioned that I LOVE this show???
