Castle’ Feud — What Really Happened Behind The Scenes!
April 22, 2016
Fans are furious after the announcement that Stana Katic – who played Kate Beckett on Castle for the last 8 years – was not invited back for a possible ninth season. And although her character is pivotal, if the show goes on – she will not be a part of the Castle detective duo.
It was revealed that Stana and her long-time co-star, Nathan Fillion, didn’t get along and Dish Nation has exclusively learned all the behind-the-scenes details that may have led to the demise of the show.
“Everyone is upset over Stana’s departure even though we feared for some time it was coming,” an on-set source dished.
“She and Nathan – who plays her husband Richard Castle — have not been getting along for a few years now, even though in the beginning they became fast friends and it was even rumored they were dating.”
This year again for the second time, Stana and Nathan hardly ever worked together — per their request. The few scenes they had were fast and short
“It wasn’t one thing in particular that caused the rift, it was just that over time Stana’s star rose and Nathan felt he was being upstaged because he considered himself the star of the show,” the insider said.
“As her popularity increased, she was given pay raises, and she even got a new dressing room equal to his. As time went on, Nathan became more and more distant, insisting that they only set foot on set together when it was absolutely necessary.
“And this past season he demanded that when they did have a scene together – the writers make it short. Ironically, while their on set chemistry was hot – their off set chemistry was not!”
According to the Dish Nation insider, Stana has always wanted to direct, and went on the set to ‘shadow’ the director one day so she could learn the ropes. Nathan was livid and demanded she leave.
“It was Stana’s day off and she opted to come in just to follow the director around,” the source said.
“But when Nathan found out her intentions, he put his foot down and insisted she go home.”
Reports claim ABC made the decision to let Stana go because of budget cuts, but sources insist it was the strained relationship between Stana and Nathan that was the deal breaker.
“It’s true that ABC has to cut back on spending if the show does come back this season. Stana was making nearly as much as Nathan, so eliminating her from the cast would save them millions. But the show just isn’t going to be the same without her,” the source dished.
“ABC cut back so much this season that when it came time for the yearly wrap party, the executives called it off. A bunch of us ended up pitching in our own money for the wrap party that doubled as a retirement party for one of our grips.”
But only one half of the feuding TV couple showed.
“Stana and her husband Kris showed up, and everyone was thrilled to see her. She made a cryptic speech about her time on the show, saying how much she loved everyone and enjoyed the ride. And there wasn’t a dry eye in the room because we all felt she knew she wasn’t coming back,” the set source revealed.
“Also ironic is that last year when there was a wrap party, Nathan showed up…and Stana was a no-show as if they were purposely avoiding each other. Oddly, Nathan and Stana can’t stand each other, but her hubby Kris Brkljac and Nathan seem to get along fine.”
The source confided that because the fate of the show is up in the air, ABC decided to film two season endings. One will air if the show gets picked up and the other ending will air if it does not. Speculation is that one of the main characters may die if the show ends.
As far as the cast and crew – their feelings for the show’s co-stars are divided.
“For the most part there isn’t a Team Nathan or a Team Stana,” the insider added.
“Most everyone on set is aware that Nathan basically runs the show and calls the shots, and to cross him could mean their jobs so they get along fine with him. On the other hand they all love and adore Stana, and can’t imagine the show without her. So it will be interesting to see how well a ninth season goes without her.”
