Angie...I wasn't upset at all by the drinking. it was a great moment to break the ice, while not saying things you may regret later. It was a time for reflection and bonding. Both of them agreeing to just celebrate the moment that they can toast each other and in a weird way, rejoice in the fact that neither is leaving and it cements the fact that they are both friends and lovers. After all that has happened this year, everyone took a step back to think about how they got to this point. Each drink was a building block while knocking down that famous Beckett Wall. Sometimes you just need a drink. Sometimes by not talking, you can say everything you need to and then some. Kate grew up a lot that night and softened her heart while Castle remained steadfast in his convictions and more importantly...his love towards Kate. She may have left early, but all she could think about is coming home because she thought about it all day and the ring turning cemented her convictions of Needing Rick in so many ways...partner, friend and lover. Now Truly Ricks wedding vow of "For as long as we both shall Live" has taken on a new meaning. Try taking a few drinks one night...whether it's alcohol or coffee or whatever with your friends and see just how good you feel afterwards. Nice thought Angie! I'll explain, as best i can, why i hated this scene so very much. I didnt see this as them not walking away from each other, or the many other ways Ive heard it described. I saw an unhealthy couple unable to discuss their problems. Much like they havent all season. I think history has shown that alcohol in a bad situation makes things worse. Burying it doesnt help, drinking it away doesnt help, and if they just needed to "be" or feel close, a scene of them just sitting down and hugging would have gone a lot further. Kate is the daughter of an alcoholic who buried his problems and issues in the bottle. He didnt share with his daughter. Now she is doing the same? Very poor writing imo, and further ruins this couple. Par for the course this season. We may be in the minority castlefan8 but I agree with you. Maybe I disliked it so much because I have alcoholics in my family and that Kate's father is an alcoholic. But I think it's mostly because Rick and Kate don't talk about important things and it's frustrating to watch after eight seasons. Yes, neither one of them blew up at one another or walked out but I don't consider that huge progress. I don't see how drinking helps do anything but avoid the issue. Worst of all, I found it a waste of a scene that could have had a lot more emotional substance, something I feel has been lacking for a long time.

I love that people on our board can post what they feel about an episode freely. Not everyone sees things the same. I love hearing different views! Sent from my SM-N910V using proboards

I guess from my own opinion....I think the drinking scene was Kate's breaking point. After all she did this season to Rick, to the marriage, to the rabbit whole she crawled back into, and more importantly to herself, she had to accept that Rick's persistence had finally wore her down and touched that nerve that only adrenaline junkies understand. I always said that these two were the modern day Nick and Nora Charles (The Thin Man) . If you have ever scene those awesome movies from yester year, please understand that those two drank a lot whether it was a coping mechanism or just their thing, it was a part of who they were.
I don't condone drinking either, but both Kate and Rick always seem to have a drink in their hands in private. I think the pressure of everything that transpired just destroyed Kate and she had no option but to stop her running and protecting. She didn't know how to process this info from Rick, but she knew that he cared so much about her that he was willing to let his go to save her from herself . She had to take a long hard long at herself and in that scene in the morning , she appeared to understand that something was terribly wrong and that she had to accept Rick, much like he accepted Kate in that watershed moment in season 5.
She just didn't know how to handle all this and so she escaped one last time to the bottle. Rick has always been patient with her because he knows how flawed she is . So, in this instance, he gave her a chance to think and drink, but not leave and at that point in the quiet contemplation of the morning watching her husband sleep , I feel she knew she and he should have talked it out, but she just couldn't. Again, this points to the frailty of the Beckett character and the strength of he Castle character. She just needed time to get straight in her mind.and we all the results the next night.
Ok ... So I grant you, maybe the drinking scene was wrong, but not out of character for these two. Kate is so used to doing things alone and she , like Rick never stops digging and fighting for her version of the greater good.
So ...can she please stop now and let's finish this season. There is still some story left to tell.

This thread is the reason I wish that Castle would never end. I adore the thoughts, and that it appears we have had some good character moments/developments/affirmations in this episode. And the back and forth and the difference of views, and the explaining that's allowed, everything... This is how it's done. *Here's to "you"; here's to "us"* ~ Cheers! Being the spoiler junkie that I am, I have just HAD to dabble in reading this thread, which led me to reading it in its entirety, and I've enjoyed every minute! I haven't watched yet since Winter hiatus, and still won't, but when I do, I can't wait to come back to this episode discussion. Hope you'll all indulge me. lol... Feels like old times. Makes this one writer girl happy.

I like to take what people have written and look for what they are talking about ...so many great views in this thread...if this is where it ends, I am glad that I am in here.

The drinking scene bothered me, because of the lack of talking between them. I would have liked them to either talk it out or f**k it out. It seems like the writers always cop out when we need to hear the words. The other things is that Jim is an alcoholic. I know Castle and Beckett are seen with a glass of wine together occasionally, but we never see them trying to get drunk, and that is what it seemed like. Like they were drowning out their emotions. I don't think Kate would do that. When we have seen Castle enhibreated it is usually because of Beckett but he is not with her. Just seemed off to me....

I did like it. The first episode all season i will watch again. However, there were afew things that really, really bothered me. I abhor the fact that Castle now confides in Hayley. I long for the days when he used to talk to Martha like that. I hated the drinking scene. Talk. The bed scene when she leaves him there, awful. These 'catch up' sex scenes, drunk sex scenes arent doing it for me. This isnt a healthy couple. Not the Caskett Ive known since S5 I love SK, but there was some overacting there afew times. Sorry. Not enough Castle/Beckett working together. But thats S8 What was that end scene? Run out of time? Disappointing and hurried. So, it took us 15 episodes to get here. Drop the 1 - this should have been 8x05. What a wasted season. I feel constrained to point out that Caskett wasn't exactly a "healthy" couple in season 5 either. They lied and withheld things from each other and relied upon subtext rather than talk about things they needed to talk about and "fixed things with sex" then too. With the notable exception of "After Hours" Kate didn't confide her misgivings about their relationship for most of the season culminating in her abortive job in DC in season six. They have never really been a healthy couple. Ever. Despite her promise to the contrary Kate was still hiding things and not being open and honest about her investigation with him. He had to talk to somebody and it's much more healthy that he talk to Hayley than to a pyramid on his kitchen counter. That Castle at least can confide in one person outside of his immediate circle is actually a good and healthy thing. His daughter has her biases, Ryan and Esposito certainly have theirs His mother has been giving him awful, self serving advice.(and everyone in their immediate orbit seems to have shown they are skewed toward siding with Kate over hearing him out) Hayley is the one person who knows everything that is going on who can be objective about the whole thing. Though the drinking scene was not exactly their best choice at least they avoided the destructive fight they would have had in previous seasons (Knockout, Always & Watershed) I think too much was read into the fact that she left for work without waking him. She had a lot to think about and I think it was a good thing that Kate didn't have the usual knee-jerk reaction she usually does when her actions are questioned. Personally I would have preferred that the action sequence was a bit shorter to allow more time at the end for them to reconcile, it was still less of a let down than episodes 8 and 9. I agree though, that the whole separation arc was a waste of time for the show. It did not advance the Lock-Sat storyline, did not move the characters forward and in fact the season seemed more about the separation than about anything else, an excuse for Mr. Hawley to turn back the clock to season 3 than to move forward. Time that could have been spent making the still sight unseen bad guy make sense. But I'll take it if that means this insipid "b" plot is now over.
