Well, my week is starting off by going over medical bills from my surgery. So far, we've found two mistakes that would have us paying over $2,000 more out of pocket than we should. One is a mistake from the hospital, the other from the insurance. So I'll be on the phone this week trying to get that sorted out. Fun times.
Yesterday's Daytona 500 had a five hour rain delay and didn't finish up until about 1am, but we watched it all and it was a fun finish. I also had to watch and review The Rookie, I didn't get to bed until 3am.
You'd think I'd still be asleep but my hip was aching so I decided to get an new ice pack, check my bank account online, and then I just ended up here at PFJ so I thought I'd start this thread...but maybe I'll go back to bed and try for a couple more hours of sleep. Thankfully, it's Presidents Day, we all have off, and I don't have to be anywhere until my physical therapy appointment at 2pm.
Hope your week is starting out well. Be sure to check in...

Yeah...you need to get some sleep!
I had my second COVID-19 vaccination at 0920 as scheduled. The operational staff mentioned possible sensitivity at the injection site even if there was none with first shot. Also, I heard a doctor on the news this morning say that some people have had a short duration period of 'chills'. Since my vaccination cycle is completed, I am absolutely satisfied! I would really be worried if I had not had the vaccinations. Nevertheless, I will still maintain the masking and avoid crowds.

It's my understanding that it takes about 2 weeks from the last vaccine to reach your fullest level of immunity. Everyone I know who has gotten their second shot has had about a day of a low-grade fever and achy, but they say that's a sign that your body's immune system is responding so I guess it's a good thing. Glad things will be a little safer for you.

Larry glad you have both shots. I did test negative along with my friend for covid. We didn’t go to the Sistine chapel event or have dinner just in case. I treated my kitties inside and out to a can of tuna for Valentine’s Day. I’m planning on going out in my RV for the first time since Nov. my RVing women’s group stays very safe with COVID precautions. Looking at Texas with all of the snow and ice, I think He’ll might be starting to freeze over.

I have a cousin in the Dallas area. They are having rolling blackouts and they've had no running water for the last 24 hours. She said they've been bringing in buckets of water from the swimming pool so that they can flush the toilets!
I also have a friend who moved from NJ to San Antonio. She can't wrap her brain around the fact that it's snowing there. The power is out and there's no heat but overall, they're okay. There's no such thing as ice or snow removal on the roads so hopefully when this stops the temperatures go up and melt all of this quickly. She said a lot of homes down there aren't built with heat or much insulation so she worries about folks in poorer communities literally freezing to death.

I have a friend who lives in a senior community in Houston. She has power, but the internet and phone service have been off and on the last couple days. Her daughter's complex lost power so she's without heat, and the Marriott down the street from my friend lost power this morning, too. It's supposed to be 32 there today and my friend said Texas calls itself the energy state!

Every state is on either the Eastern or the Western power grid EXCEPT Texas. They're reaping what they have sown over the years by not wanting to be part of a federal solution.
It snowed all day yesterday although many times it was light. I finally decided to go out and shovel since I'd rather do 6" instead of whatever the final total will be. Our driveway is 3 carlengths long. My husband has 4 wheel drive and I don't so I concentrated on my side. I kept thinking about how everyone used to say 60 is the new 40 so I kept thinking I'm just in my 40s! Well, my body wasn't buying it. I just had to take more breaks than I used to. I wanted to be done before my hubby got home because he has 2 bad knees and a shoulder that needs to be replaced. He got home and helped with the last 20 feet. Today it was a beautiful, winter wonderland. We only got about 2 more inches so it was fairly easy to shovel the area that had already been shoveled. We live on a steep although relatively short street. The neighbor at the bottom of the hill used to shovel the entire street so we can up the hill although a couple of us would shovel the street in front of our houses. Well, this year he has a little Fischer-Price (kidding!) snow blower. He blew one lane up to my driveway but buried the road in front of my mailbox. That was murder to unbury about 2 feet of chunky packed snow. A couple of hours later he came out and shoveled and blew a lane all the way up the street. It's amazing how much you can sweat when it's only 15*. The sun is clearing off the concrete where it's been shoveled and a lot of it is dry already! Hope we don't get more tomorrow!

There are rolling blackouts and power failures in more states than just Texas. I feel for all affected by the power issues. People are trying to take care of infants, elderly, pets... There are outages in Michigan and Ohio, as well. Windmills are frozen, electrical grids are crippled, no solar, no wind, no hydro power. Killing fossil fuels is a short-sighted idea, at best. Green energy when put into practice, failed. Closing the pipeline was a bad idea. Not to mention all the people now out of work. Gas prices are going back up. At the risk of sounding political, I just wanted to convey some compassion for those in Texas, and other places without power. We've been there. It's not fun.

Texas actually produces the most energy of any state in the nation, but unfortunately none of their infrastructure was designed to deal with this kind of cold (whether wind or fossil fuels). My sister lived in Alaska and Canada for years in areas where all of the energy in their region came from wind turbines, without issue. Unfortunately, Texas' wind turbines weren't built for cold weather, which I guess I understand because who thinks about freezing conditions in Texas where summers frequently reach 100 degrees, but they may want to rethink that moving forward. The unprecedented temperatures have shut down oil refineries. Drilling in fracking areas has had to go offline because of the cold. Gas and coal power plants have had to shut down because they need water to operate and the freezing temps have shut down the water supply. Power lines have iced and broken. Even their nuclear plants have issues because of the water shortage. It seems there's no one thing to point to other than extreme cold weather in an area that has never had to deal with it before now. I have both family and friends in Texas and I just hope things warm up soon. The rest can eventually be fixed once people don't have to worry about freezing to death.

Texas gets less than 10% of their power from windmills yet the governor went on Fox and blamed their problems on failed windmills (which they didn't winterize). I hope they investigate the problems but for right now I can't imagine what they are going through. I've never been without power for more than a day. Even when they get power back there will be burst pipes and other things to deal with.

I heard rumors that more well-off neighborhoods in Texas weren't losing power. My husband asked a friend how her daughter in Austin was doing (She's a scientist with a great job). They haven't lost power but have taken in some families that have. On the news I saw scenes of people standing in long lines to get propane tanks filled. Most weren't wearing very warm clothes but were wrapped in blankets. I guess in Texas you don't need many warm clothes. It's a very sad situation.

Another couple inches last night. I've shoveled every day this week. I know that isn't much but I'm getting tired. I have to keep it cleared off because our driveway is quite steep and I'll never get up the hill if I don't. It's a real heat wave today - up to 26*. I can't even zip my lighter winter coat because I get so hot.

This winter has just been weird for so many and we totally feel sorry for those who have been affected by it especially those not used to it. Our winter has been wonderful by Wisconsin standards so no complaints here. Like Larry, we both got our 2nd dose on Tuesday. Just achy, chilly, and a little tired for side effects. We are happily putting up with the side effects to have both doses. We are looking forward to Mar. 2 when we will be able to resume life a little. It will allow us to carefully get haircuts, pedicures, go to the dentist and doctor, and do more than grocery shop. Like Larry said, we too will continue to mask, distance, and be careful. Appointments and shopping early when stores are less crowded. it will just be nice to have a little bit of normal

It looks like we got another 4 to 6 inches this morning. The snow has stopped but it's supposed to start up again tonight. But I guess I'm lucky; because of my surgery I'm not allowed out in the snow. So others have to do the shoveling and I've rescheduled my physical therapy for tomorrow afternoon.
My husband says the roads were horrible getting to work this morning, probably because the snow didn't start until about 5am and was ongoing so there wasn't much time to get it cleared. He said there were tractor trailers flying by him on the highway, so he's just glad he made it to work in one piece and no one jack-knifed in front of him.
