Well, this last week has taken an unexpected turn, in a good way. My mother and step-father live in California. Now that they’ve both retired, they recently sold their large home. They were planning to stay in California but they haven’t had much luck finding a home they like, in their price range, that doesn’t need a lot of work and isn’t in a fire or flood zone.
So it looks like they may be moving back to NJ after almost 30 years! My husband actually found a development he thought would suit them. It’s about 40 minutes from where we are now. Covid has made this challenging because of the risks involved in flying and the quarantine procedures if you travel between states. So my husband, daughter and I have driven to the new home site three times in five days to check out lots and take photos and videos.
It’s funny because just a couple of weeks ago I would have said they’d never move back east, and now it may really be happening. You just never know…
So what’s happening with everyone else? Check in and let us know.

Good news about your folks. As a grandparent, I know we found our move from Northern Virginia [DC metro area is nuts!] to western Virginia certainly was the right decision. Our families' homes are 20 minutes apart thus not so close as to be a concern. We let them raise their kids. We are always available for transportation or whatever when needed - always readily available for concerts or recitals. We had a great family cook-out yesterday at our home. Today, they are with some of their friends. We were going to do yard work; however, Dawn 'found' hornets while transplanting some things. One angry resident [dozens erupted from the based of the plant being moved] where she was digging and really got her in left ankle. It is very swollen at her left ankle and top of the foot. She has some relief from swabbing area with lemon juice. Apparently, that is a common remedy in England [who knew that?]. Anyway, I think we are staying inside although she is not easily convinced yet but beginning to agree. My best approach is to shut-up and be sure to keep her tea cup filled. Happy Labor Day!

WISCONSIN
86,981(+10,397) Cases 1177(+47) Deaths
BROWN COUNTY
6049(+580) Cases 58(+0) Deaths
Faster and faster we go up. People continue to gather and ignore. We have come to the conclusion that we will never get to travel again, never stay in a hotel, no church, no indoor restaurants, and, worst of all, never have normal relations with our loved ones again. We are crushed and will continue to just limp along like lots of other old people in our area. I apologize for getting personal like this and it will be the last time I comment about Covid.

It will be nice to have your folks closer. Yes it looks like the upper part of the USA is now where the virus is going crazy. I wonder how much if from Sturgis?? I heard many cases have been attributed to that gathering. Tomorrow I am finally supposed to get my RV carport installed. I hope it goes well. It was manufactured in Texas. The factory was shut down a couple of times during Covid. I have a couple of friends comping over to help me make sure they do it right. I am thankful for my camping friends. They are opening up the Mesa Schools today. They will be on a split schedule with half the kids coming on Monday and Tuesday, Wednesday cleaning and group B on Thursday and Friday. Arizona is down to 2% infection rate. After last weekend we will see if that holds.

Our county only had about 200 more Covid cases in August and 10 more fatalities. That's way down from where it was in the spring. The school is saying they hope to have the kids back for the hybrid (part in-school/part virtual) schedule by October 12th, but I'm in no rush to see them go back. I wish they'd just play it safe and stay all virtual until after the winter holiday break, but I suppose they'll base it on what the numbers do this month.
As for my mother and step-father moving back to NJ, they are considering buying a townhouse in a new development. The upside is that they'd get to choose everything from the layout to the finishes and fixtures. The downside is that it won't be ready for 9 months to a year and they'd have to rent something until it's done. They'll have to make a decision by next week.
Although I'll be happy if they move back, I can't be 100% certain that we'll be here (which they know.) My husband's office will be moving to NYC in a year. It would be a long and costly commute and I feel like we'd hardly get to see him. So he's been looking at transferring to an office in Florida. The upside of that is the real estate prices are a lot lower there and we might be able to buy something, which we can't afford here in NJ. But now I feel like, Do we want to move if my parents are moving back here? But how do we afford to stay?
It's all very confusing and I'm trying to not stress out too much about it as I have little control over what comes next. I just have to believe that somehow, opportunities will present themselves and it will all work out...I hope!

Florida to NJ is a day car trip. Much better than NJ to Calif. Moving to Florida would work.
My RV Carport is now on hold again. My friends were here today and after doing lots of measuring and thinking it was decided that instead of 12 wide I need to go with 14 ft wide. Instead of 3 inches clearance on the mirrors I will have a foot. MUCH easier to navigate. It will cost more but worth it I feel. So glad for the extra eyes and thoughts.
Still waiting to get my solar panels working. I finally made some calls and got more insistent today. I have been trying to be nice on calls but the panels have been in for over 30 days and I'm still waiting for the inspections so I can turn them on.

From where we are in NJ to where we'd likely be in Florida, it's about and 18 hour drive, so two days. Still, easier than with them living in California. But the truth is we have no idea where we will end up, which is disconcerting. There are just a lot of questions we don't have answers for right now, job and money being the biggest. But the good news is that my parents put a deposit down on the townhouse they want! The downside is it won't be ready for a year, but they plan to rent an apartment in the Napa area of California and enjoy the year there before heading back east. I think it's a great plan for them, and I'll just have to believe that everything else will work itself out.

PTVJ, if you end up in Florida, maybe your parents could winter there. After living in California all those years, the NJ winters might be more than they can take. Cold and snow can take a toll on us older folks, lol.

larryholmes - I hope Dawn’s swelling has gone down. A hornet’s nest is nothing to mess with. I’d never heard of using lemon juice. I’ll have to remember that one. And my Mom is definitely looking forward to spending more time with my daughter who is her oldest granddaughter. The only downside is that she’ll be farther away from her youngest granddaughter who is about to turn 4. It’s tough having family so far away from one another. geezer2008, maybe I’m the forever optimist but I have to believe we’ll have a working vaccine by spring and, although I don’t think things will be completely normal, we’ll at least be headed in that direction. However, I do think the holidays are going to be difficult this year. We’ll all just have to make the best of it, I suppose. Hang in there. tycho657, it sounds like the larger carport is the way to go. And I hope you get those solar panels up and going. My Mom has had them for a few years in California and they’ve just loved them. Drvrtrnr, I was thinking that too. I am not a fan of cold weather either which is one of the reasons I’d be happy to move to Florida. If we do end up there, I was planning to invite the family down so we’d have Christmas with sunshine and palm trees! But, if my husband has a job he enjoys (I’m lucky in that I can do my job from anywhere), and we can find a better place than the apartment we have now, with a good school, I’ll be happy no matter where we are.

So...we were identifying the next yard task. We were not near the 'hornet attack site'; yet, they must have notified nearby relatives we were out and about. Dawn worries about my ankle's stability after its second rebuild/repair surgery. Thus, she was on the semi-weedy slope to decide how to safely do the work she has in mind. As you can imagine, some hornets were on alert. Three got her - twice on left forearm and once on right upper arm. Apparently, they have just arrived in our yard; or, we had never been alert enough to spot them before. We have an insect and pest service; however, hornet protection is not very successful program at all - only colony treatment for specific sites works. Maybe this second hornet attack and my poison ivy experience should be a real cautionary tale!

larry, is there a pest company in your area that takes care of bees? If so, they may be able to help. My sister had to call a business that specialized in bees.
