Here's how The Rookie stacked up against the competition...
--------------- Demo (18-49) - Total Viewers New Amsterdam - 1.2/5 - 6.27 million The Rookie - 1.0/5 - 5.43 NCIS: New Orleans 0.8/3 - 7.20
*ABC 9:30pm slot - Splitting Up Together - 0.9 - 3.29
So The Rookie was second in the demo and third in millions of viewers, but NCIS: New Orleans has quite a steady following and New Amsterdam has had three weeks to build an audience and is on right after This Is Us, on of NBC's hottest shows.
We'll just have to see how The Rookie does moving forward.

It didn't win the night but it didn't do poorly either. The real story will be in what it does going forward.

I think the thrust of the article was how well the show did in relation to ABC's performance record, which is kind of miserable compared to CBS and NBC. However, I do believe that with the support ABC has given then show, it'll continue to build an audience, even if it's through delayed viewing. I think it's well done and is different enough from other cop shows to have a place in the mix.
I have to chuckle though, when I read the ratings stats. Back when Castle was hanging in the balance, those kinds of numbers were the kiss of death. Only having a 1.0 was miserable and now it's considered OK.

I remember Castle's demo being around 3.0 during the first couple of seasons but so much has changed during the last 10 years of TV viewing. So many people watch shows via DVR or streaming, myself included, that networks have had to reevaluate what those numbers mean.

I think it was a mistake to premiere The Rookie so long after the majority of the new shows. I think people watch for new shows around mid to late September. I know they promoted the heck out of it but I'm sure lots of people never even noticed it was on.
