Didn't see a thread for this one yet....this show was briefly discussed in the Deception thread.
This show is a lot like Castle, in its premise, and at least in the pilot, in its execution.
I was seeing so many similarities to Castle I started writing them down.
A recap..... Instinct is about a former CIA operative turned professor/author, Dr. Dylan Reinhart, who joins forces with Lizzie Needham, an NYPD detective, to solve a series of murders based on a theory in the professor’s psychology book.
Other than the fact that Reinhart is a married gay man, Instinct really is a take-off on Castle. Reinhart had one successful book and is now dealing with kind of a writer’s block with his second book. The killer is leaving clues based on the guy’s book, a psychology book that uses a theory about playing cards. And the killer is leaving playing cards as a clue to his next victim, just like in Kill Shot.
There was a lot of back-and-forth between the detective and the professor. She denied reading his book but later admitted to having read it 3 times. The guy was ready with a theory at every turn, just like Castle in the early years. He follows orders about as well as Castle. And like Castle, he has guys.
Did a little reading up on this series….it’s actually based on a book by James Patterson, and he is one of the producers. The book was published in June 2017….wonder if he took any inspiration for the story from Castle.
Overall, I enjoyed this show. I'll probably watch a few more episodes to see if it holds up.

Thanks for the synopsis of the pilot. I was going to watch but I really don't care for serial killers. I don't care for the lead guy. He is just annoying to me so I don't think I could watch an hour of tv with him.
I think Patterson could have easily taken some story ideas from Castle. He was one of the original poker buddies.

I didn't really get much of a Castle vibe from this one. Yeah he's a writer who's lost his mojo and murders are occurring based on his book, but it didn't really feel Castle-like at all. He's a married gay guy, writer, professor, former CIA operative. Obviously, he's not attracted to the female detective. I really didn't get any connection between the 2. I didn't understand why she was even opening up to him so quickly. It didn't have any charm like Castle did. I'm not a fan of Alan Cumming, but I'm interested enough to watch more episodes. My husband already doesn't care for it and he doesn't have a problem with Alan.

Hi everyone Motown - thanks for the recap. Again, like Deception, I don't think that the UK has this series yet. I didn't get a Castle vibe from what you said (perhaps I need to see a trailer) but I immediately thought Will & Grace regarding the situation between the leads? And whenever I read the name Alan Cumming I immediately think Nightcrawler, one of the most brilliant introductions to a character that I have ever seen. And then of course there was Mr Elton (had to look up the character name) in the Gwyneth Paltrow version of Emma (can never again watch that movie because of the picnic scene). B

We finally got to watch the premiere of Instinct last night and we really enjoyed it. First off, my husband and I are big fans of Alan Cumming from his time on The Good Wife and, although different, I liked his character here too. I enjoyed that his character, Prof. Dylan Reinhart, is married and gay. I think I’ve had enough of the “will they/won’t they” scenario for a while, and this ensures that it’s not an issue on this show, at least not for the two leads. I did think that Lizzie opened up to him a little quickly, but I liked her back story and felt her pain over the possibility of losing her dog. I like Lizzie and Dylan as friends and colleagues. I also like that Dylan is formerly CIA. That gives more credence to him working with the NYPD. Also, I love Dylan’s background in psychology, which I’ve always found fascinating. tycho657, the serial killer is only in the pilot episode, so I’m assuming there will be different types of cases moving forward. I promised myself that I would give Deception a second chance (haven’t watched the second ep yet), but I’m actually looking forward to watching more of Instinct.

I know episodes sometimes have similar plots, but, last night's Instinct was especially bad. A piano progeny is killed. He used black and white popsicle sticks to make the keys to practice. A nice local piano teacher didn't charge for lessons as he was from an Amish-like community. In the last scene the main characters take a dvd player so the parents can see their dead son play for Julliard admission. Even the script had some of the exact same dialogue as Castle. So the setup was the same. The plot did deviate, but, I could hardy watched without thinking what a rip off this episode was. I think that was the last Instinct for me. I have identified the killer upon introduction in all three episodes. I don't care about the main characters enough to overlook the other issues I have with the series.
And did anyone notice how many executive producers were named on this show? It must have been 15!!! Strange.... I noticed as I thought maybe the writer might have been connected to Castle. To my knowledge he was not. I guess he just saw a Castle episode and stole the idea. Heck, maybe Castle writers stole the idea as well. LOLOL..... either way it wasn't as good as the Castle episode.

I thought the story sounded exactly like a show I had seen, but I couldn't place it until I read the following tweet claiming it was stolen straight from Bones. Now i remember the Bones story.

cxq319 and ibmjas - I think there have been so many crime procedurals over the last couple of decades that it's not unusual to watch a new show and find a similar story, or even dialogue from a different show. I see it all the time when I review shows and I try not to judge them too harshly. The writers may not have seen the show you are linking it to, or they may just be inspired by the same thing the original writer was inspired by. If I'm otherwise enjoying a show, I try to cut them some slack. That said, I haven't watched the most recent episode of Instinct. I watched both Castle and Bones so I'm curious to see if I find myself thinking of either show when I do watch.

ibjmas, perhaps I was wrong and it was from Bones. I just remember the basic plot it being done almost verbatim. Could be my old brain leaped to Castle instead. Sorry for the mislead and thanks for the correction.

Tycho - I'm like you in that I finally got around to watching this series and I like it! It didn't hook me (The Gifted S2 can't happen soon enough, & 1st episode of A Discovery of Witches - I need to read the book) but I want to see how the characters develop because that is where my interest lies with this series. I liked that you learn about Lizzie, his partner and the lieutenant before you learn about Dylan in the 4th episode. I like the banter between the lead characters, that she didn't hide the fact that she had read his book 3 times, that they wanted to be partners rather than be made to be partners. I like that they both get the clues and not just him. It also made me miss the fact that in the later seasons we didn't just get murders in Castle without some kind of conspiracy, at least that's how it appeared. It made me wish that Rick had taken Kate on a horse drawn carriage ride through the park and then onto dinner and a Broadway show... I do wonder though if Lizzie's fiance was simply killed in the line of duty or whether that will become something more and whether like Castle, Dylan won't know how to tell her... B

Can anyone confirm if the second season of this series has begun? Last I read there was some concern as to what would happen with this series as Alan Cummings is appearing in another series. Also thought that I read the first episode didn't have great ratings but then if no-one knew it had returned... B

Not a great way to start a second season if fans don't know that there's another season. Do I assume that it hasn't had much advertising? B
