With Kat's permission, some of these posts have been moved from the movie thead. Feel free to continue the conversation about the Arizona trip here. The Proposal is probably at the top of my list too! I don't think I've seen any other movie as many times as that one. A close second is While You Were Sleeping and I love the classic musicals too, especially Fiddler On The Roof, Sound Of Music, Mary Poppins and Camelot. I can never get enough of the Hallmark Christmas movies and this year I was especially taken withI'll Be Home For Christmas with James Brolin and Finding Father Christmas with Niall Matter. My other holiday favorite is The Polar Express with Tom Hanks. The grandsons and I have watched it a bazillion times and it never gets old! Ohhh, ma gosh... I've been meaning to tell you.... The boys & I & my soon to be first "daughter-in-love" spent Christmas in the Grand Canyon & Sedona. We took the train ride from Williams, Arizona to the Grand Canyon. Little did we know, they also offer through the Christmas season, train rides "On the Polar Express"!!! Yes! Tis true! EVERY evening we would see children and their parents all dressed in their best Christmas jammies and robes heading to the train depot outside of the hotel, to board the Polar Express. The trains are lit up with lights on the outside, and on the inside/the ride is truly the Polar express, so we heard. Complete with hot chocolate, bells, the whole she-bang. Thinking that would be a magical Christmas treat for your grandsons some year. It's the Grand Canyon Railway that offers these. I am not sure of the dates as to when they run the Polar Express rides as far as when-to-when through the season, but the excitement in the air with the children throughout us being there over the holiday was pretty impressive. I think it was probably some kind of magic to them. Just FYI for you.

View AttachmentThis was our train. They're all 1940's & 50's vintage Santa Fe trains. Very cool stuff. This is at the end of one of the days at the Grand Canyon. Being a Midwestern girl, I thought going to Arizona over Christmas was going to get me/us out of the winter weather. The joke was on us! It was colder, snowier and more difficult to navigate in because they aren't used to it down there, than it was back here in Ohio over Christmas. LoL! The experience was beautiful, but note to self, if I'm going on vacation in the winter, and want to be warm, go VERY South. Not just West. SOUTH. lol.... the memories that were made were priceless. But did I mention it was freezing? lol... If you would have come to the Phoenix area you do get warm weather for most of Dec and Jan. When you head to the mountains....6-7,000 ft...you get snow and cold. You went to the mountains...you get snow and cold. 65 here today as the sun sets and we have a glorious colorful sunset as we have had clouds today. Sent from my SM-N910V using proboards

They had one golf cart trying to clear the sidewalks AND roads at the resort with a little blade on the front. Two days later, the sidewalks were still icy and snowy. No salt. I fell three times. I'm not sure what the deal was. Here in Northwest Ohio, salt and vehicles with plows on the fronts of them are a must. I would've thought they would've at least had a few little trucks with plows. It was incredible. It took us 30 minutes to dig our van out of the parking lot. Just crazy. We flew into and out of phoenix, and it was even chilly there. But it is winter. And I"m used to it, and used to driving in it. It wasn't a big deal to us. I was just really surprised at the extent of how it was so extreme and how little the town of Williams was prepared. Route 66 was right next door, so we went over to see it one day and to see about getting something to eat. The complete street for three blocks was nearly shut down. Anyway, it was an interesting trip. I don't think we'll be taking any more vacations in the winter. lol... but we made great memories anyway! I was with the kids. Can't beat that. Sorry to hijack this thread, everyone!

nathanfan1 .... I remember you talking about that movie and how enthralled Lucas was, and apparently still is, with it. I know they offer these "Polar Express" train rides in many local towns/cities. I'm sure you could find one much closer. The children in the lobby on Christmas eve all decked out in their new Christmas jammies were so excited to be getting on that train. It was such a delight to my heart to watch them all. It would've been equally fun to see their return. Anyway, love holiday festivity. Makes my heart happy when witnessing the child-like exuberance and wonder that it brings out in so many.

Weather report today for the Grand Canyon, 20's snow wind. They are telling people not to go as they wouldn't even be able to see the canyon. Sound familiar? Ahh winter in the high country.

Ahhh @kat, reminds me of my trip to Seattle in June several years ago. First of all we had tickets to the U2 concert and that ended up being cancelled. Devastating. And the weather was not our friend either. I packed according to the Seattle weather forecast for the week and well......the weather wasn't exactly as forcast and we ended up being woefully underdressed. I ended up buying 2 coats while there and on our adventure to Mt. Rainier Nat'l Park the only thing we got to do was play in the snow, in our capri pants, short sleeved shirts and summer shoes! Didn't even get to see the mountain for all the fog and snow. And we nearly froze to death on our whale watching trip in the Sand Juan Islands. Oooh, the memories. Nothing went right for us but hat trip ended up being one of the best my sister and I have had. So, weather schmeather. We take the good with the bad when it comes to traveling. That's part of the adventure.

Life is such a grand adventure in and of itself, so you never know what's going to happen when you're out of your league. lol.... Yeah, just being with the kids, and our eldest getting engaged while we were there...more than enough. Revolving Hear<img src= Cheers back at you, friend!

I knew parts of Arizona were at higher elevations that do get winter weather, but did not know that included the Grand Canyon. Note to self: Plan Grand Canyon trip in the summer!

Flagstaff got 20+ inches today and they have already closed schools for tomorrow. Yup when you get up high and add moisture you get snow. We have had the washes rising down here in the desert so they have been doing rescues for cars and trucks stuck in the washes . We actually have a law called "The stupid motorist law". When people go into a wash when they see water and they get stuck and have to be rescued they get fined for the cost of the rescue. A few inches of water can turn into a river of water and float a car very fast.
