Out of curiosity did anyone else's ears pick up the subtle playing of a few notes of "I Just Want You" on piano when Beckett is talking to Castle before the award dinner?
I believe I heard the notes played very softly.

I thought I did too. My daughter loves that melody. She's always saying she wishes it was available on iTunes.

I believe I heard the notes played very softly. Good ear Rob Duncan loves to put in his little motif nods to the characters he has created. He just tweeks them each time to make them just a little different to show the changes that have occurred with the characters. I was lucky enough to be able to have a nice chat with Rob after he wrote the Always episode about this. He was thrilled that people actually recognized that he was doing these little motif nods to characters. It is intentional. If you have twitter check out Robert Duncan's twitter account and you will see a nice thank you to fans who notice his work. You will also see a picture of our group with Rob at the Raleigh Studio. He asked if he could get a picture with us. He was so happy to know he had "fans".

This was probably one of the best done episodes ever.
It really gave a glimpse of things to come, but also kinda brought us up to snuff on the state of the show. Everything is now up to real time and most of the storytelling that Marlowe was so concerned about has been at least addressed in one way or another. Stana as Kate looks very comfortable as Mrs. Castle and Nathan as Rick just adores her. Unconditional love from both sides. And he noted how she brought him back to life and the great part is was that we know he did the same for her. I loved the fact that for years, they were scared of being in love with each other, but they always knew that they were. That push and pull drove the show and I have to tell you, it still does. That last scene as Rick was talking about his family and borthers in arms and friends and then Kate was perfection. What more can you ask? Well let me tell you...the fact that Kate is so proud to be the inspiration behind Nikki Heat says it all as well because it bridges the Meta with the Reality of being married and working side by side with her "Brilliant" partner and husband Richard Castle. We should all take out hats off to Marlowe for the way he developed the characters and told his love story in a way that was frustrating, yet believable to the viewing audience. Standing Ovation my friend. Job well done.
This episode was a gateway or a threshold that meshes the past with the present leading to the future. We see possible new directions for both Rick and Kate. She is certain to get into politics and Rick is inching closer to writing "Serious" pieces of work. Martha has made a complete turnaround and Alexis is greatness waiting to happen. She will be shining North Star when this series finally ends. The one's who are not sure are the ones that destiny and fate seem to tab for Epic Things. Javier and Ryan for 10 years have been side by side and maybe, it may be time, soon, to have them go in different direction as Jimmy's own family grows. Javier will end up with Lanie....it's in the stars. They too, much like Rick and Kate, are fooling themselves into believing that they are just friends. And Gates will someday be the Commissoner, unless Ryan beats her out. Javier will be the chief of detectives or Ryan and Espo take over Castle's Detective Agency. Time will tell, right Simon Doyle?
Ok....here is the cool part. We got to see Rick work. We never get to see this side of him when he becomes the serial killer. This is what he does best. He takes over their mind. He walks in their shoes. He is completely in character. He touches the cold body of the dead girl and then he is whisked away by a Kiss version of the "Scream" Reaper dude played do well by Wallace Langham. He remembers the voice, the pitch, the diction, the pace, the emotion of how he spoke. It stays with him. He feels the knife against his throat. Why does he let him live? Why did 3XK let Castle live?. Rick knows and remembers. This is how he gets in their minds. This is how he uses their insecurities against them.
When Castle and Beckett are talking to the Langham Character, Rick becomes the Reaper. He talks slow, forceful, his eys shift, the emotion seethes from his pores. A cold stare and he begins to interrogate the person he knows. The person he remembers. That voice gave him away. The way he talked gave him away. So here is Rick...showing him a drawing of the mask, and killer is fighting freaking out because he knows that now he is looking in the mirror and talking to himself. Rick almost seduces him with the questions and you can tell it becomes a game and he is turned on because he is getting into it. Rick has him. He knows it. He just can prove it. And it really makes me angry that after all these years, they still follow the evidence and think Rick is nuts. We can't prove it, so it can't happen. Even Kate. That is the beauty of the show. This is the essence of all things Castle. This is what drives this show. Rick tells a story, shares a theory, and gets put down, but then it turns out to be correct and it leaves them wondering how he does it. The story is the crime. It supplies the evidence. It leads to the killer. This is what Rick gave to Kate and now she thinks outside the box better than anyone. She can shift gears and it makes her unstoppable. It makes them unstoppable. So Kate digs and gets the plot of land and Rick knows he is there, waiting for him. Amazing, no just Castle. And again, they think alike, Rick has a knife on his throat, gets his hand free and Kate gives him the gun. And for the first time, we see Rick Castle kill someone. A great scene and it typifies all that they have been trough and evolved into over 7 glorious years.
So did I like this show? No way....I loved this episode. So much to look forward to now. Fresh starts, new beginnings. New Castle. The little train that could CAN!!!!!

Great recap, kman! My personal opinion is, though, that Kate will not run for office. The entire cast has been resigned and if she becomes a Senator, there's no need for Javi and Kevin. I think she decides to turn down the politics (for now) and become a Captain. Of course, I'm probably wrong. Usually am. :-)

This show is a procedural drama....things and storylines take time to develop....maybe seasons....everything Kate does will eventually lead her to where she needs to be. I look forward to it....

I couldn't help but want to add the photo of us when we met Robert Duncan, especially after Teresa mentioned it. Of course, technical difficulty is my loyal shadow, I couldn't get the photo to post, so I kindly asked java to help me out. I seriously need to buy him a pony, for always being so willing to give any of us assistance with so much. Thank you, kind sir, for helping a girl out!

So, I've had time to rewatch the episode, and I'm still just in awe of it. After so many years of cliff-hangers and big, unanswered questions at the end of every season, I've got to say, I really appreciate having a summer when I can just enjoy the show and look forward to next season. I think the only other time I came close to feeling this way was after "Always," because even the threat of Maddox couldn't top the immense satisfaction of knowing Castle and Beckett were finally going to be together.
But this episode was just so enjoyable on every level. Everything made sense; the story was perfectly told, with no gaping plot holes, no mischaracterizations, and more genuine emotion than an hour of tv has any right to contain. It all made sense, and every piece fit together in both the small story of how this killer was caught in this particular case, and the larger story of Castle's past and the mythology of his backstory.
Last year, Marlowe said in an interview about the episode "In the Belly of the Beast" that Kate's letter to Castle while she was captive undercover was a rare opportunity for us to hear in her own words how she feels about Castle. In "Hollander's Woods" we experienced the first time she's spoken openly and publicly about her feelings for him. She said things we've waited six years to hear, namely, that she is proud to be his inspiration and that she is proud of him -- them -- in general. She's never said anything that direct to anyone before, but now, she didn't even hesitate.
Yes, this was an episode about Castle, but it was also about Castle and Beckett. We saw them be there for each other, challenge and support each other, and work together to get closure on one more unresolved chapter. We saw them talk, kiss, hug, fight, console, and reminisce. So many other shows have used tropes such as new jobs, jealousy, insecurity, and secrets to drive couples apart, to make the fans think it's over, and to create this false "apart/together/apart/together" see-saw of emotion. But time and again, Castle has used these scenarios to show the depth of Castle and Beckett's love for each other. And this episode was no different. Just like Castle was willing to move to DC to support Kate's career, now he is willing to put his scant privacy, as well as that of his family, at risk if Kate truly wants to enter the very public world of politics (more on that in a different thread!). And Kate nearly risked it all by following Castle to that barn, knowing they were toeing that line of legality once again.
So yes, I loved it all. And I loved the call-backs to the pilot, another "Always," which never seem to get old, and especially the sincere reminder of what true love really looks like. With this episode, and so many others, to sustain me, I don't think the wait for September is going to be nearly as grueling as it's been in the past, and I can definitely live with that!

Very satisfying finale. Important mythology covered in a meaningful way. Rick Castle showing his years of experience with the NYPD in the way he helped handle the case.Kate standing behind her man in a big way at the interview. The award banquet was a true highlight and gret final scene.Loved the respect given to the 12th by Rick and the credit he gave Kate for what and where he is in his life now.
More mythology to go! Bracken's name came up again and we might see more from that piece of mythology.
Agree that Kate won't choose to run for State senate. She is at heart an in the trenches detective. Helping be the voice of the dead and getting justice for the families is what she is really all about.
Futhermore I'm not sure she needs to be a captain and have her own precinct. It removes her from the trenches and make her administration. In essence a paper pusher. We all know this just isn't Kate Beckett.
I don't presume to know what direction season eight will take but I feel it would be non-productive to introduce a bunch of new mythology at this point. jmho !
I would love to see more husband and wife moments and a bit more spice in their relationship. Take that Tahiti Honeymoon, you've earned it.
It will be very interesting to see the season eight premiere and get a feel for how our DD's future lines up.
Loved this finale !!!

I am sorry for a seasonfinale to a series finale if not renewed I didn't care for this finale at all. The farout asking Kate out of all the police in NY to run for the senate was just to far a leap for me to take she is one cop not super cop she has no political experience and Castle couldn't follow her around on the campaign trail and solve murders. Maybe in 20 years after their children are all grown up but now at what is she supposed to be 33? I think there were a couple of nice scenes but no fall out from Castle killing this guy on his own land and then he goes off and gets an award. I did enjoy the Martha scene and the opening scenes with the family. The pecks on the cheek and on top of the head between this couple have got to go, on the lips was nice for a change even though we had one cheek peck. I am so hopeful with new co show runners and new writers coming in they will get away from the so far fetched story lines and get back to what made the show one I fell in love with season 1-3. Take stories right out of the news and then add some supporting cast stories, use your entire cast and then add some romance and show newlyweds doing the little cute things for each other I miss the looks and the touches. So happy to see Alexi back and TPW and him working together now and Rob Bowman has more to bear in season 8 more responsibilities then ever before. I hope they add a new writer would love to see a novelist abard to write for the series. Bring in new stories and make sure they don't go 20 episodes before continuing the story lines and not drop them longer then a couple of episodes the audience forgets. I am excited to see all cast have signed back on. I doubt Beckett will be a Capt or we lose Gates. She may make a Lt and then she can lead as well as work in the field and still be at The 12th.
